Course Description: Ashtanga Yoga (“eight-limbed yoga”; ashta=eight, anga=limb) is a system of yoga that emphasizes vinyasa: the synchronization of the breath with movement to produce inner heat, known as tapas, to purifiy the blood, detoxify the muscles and internal organs, and improve circulation. This style of yoga as it is practiced on the mat is also referred to as Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga but within the Ashtanga community of practitioners we simply say Ashtanga Yoga. The “eight limbs of Ashtanga” per se lead the path towards internal purification which is necessary for attaining self-realization. These eight spiritual paths or limbs are: Yama (moral codes), Niyama (self- purification and study), Asana (posture), Pranayama (breath control), Pratyahara (withdrawing the senses), Dharana (concentration), Dhyana (meditation), and Samadhi (meditative consciousness). Asana, the third limb, is known as Hatha Yoga.“Ha” means Sun, “Tha” Moon, and represent the search for balance in the union of opposing forces. All of the eight limbs are integral to the vinyasa practice, i.e. “ashtanga vinyasa yoga” and are the foundations for developing a strong yoga practice and guiding the practitioner while on the mat.

  • Tim Fedlmann and Kino Macgregor DATE TRANSCRIBED: February 25, 2015 TRANSCRIBED BY: Liz Lawler
PROJECT: Ashtanga Dispatch INTERVIEW WITH: Tim Fedlmann and Kino MacGregor DATE TRANSCRIBED: February 25, 2015 TRANSCRIBED BY: Liz Lawler PM [intro]: Hey everyone, it’s Peg Mulqueen with your latest episode of the Ashtanga Dispatch podcast. As Ashtanga’s most familiar and easily recognizable couple, Tim Feldmann and Kino MacGregor, couldn’t be any more different. Kino, at barely five feet definitely wears the pink shorts in the family. The youngest woman to receive certification to teach Ashtanga yoga, Kino just broke through another ceiling, by receiving the first posture of Fifth Series just this month in Mysore. Kino has made it her personal mission to introduce as many students on a global level to the Ashtanga yoga method as she possibly can. Live, in print, or in video, it’s safe to say, Kino yoga reaches millions of students a day, through books, blogs, videos, and of course, Instagram challenges. Then there’s Tim, who Kino has affectionately dubbed, the “Mayor of Mysore,” because of the way he always stops and talks to everyone. You’re more likely to find Tim chatting up philosophy over coffee than writing it up in a blog. And most of his selfies involve either a motorcycle or Kino, though preferably both. Truth is, Tim didn’t even realize the interview was being recorded, though it’s doubtful even if he had he would have changed a thing. You see as an accomplished dancer and acclaimed choreographer, Tim knows a thing or two about performance. He just doesn’t. He’s much prefer connecting with people and students personally, and in a very real way, like in the Mysore room.

The Standing Postures are perhaps the most healing series of movements in the Ashtanga practice. When done with healthy alignment these humble series of postures build your foundation, connection to the ground and sense of inner awareness. In this workshop learn how the structural foundation for forward bends, inversions and deep hip opening work is set up in the standing series of Ashtanga yoga. Gain a new found appreciation for this foundational work of yoga! I also would like to thank my dissertation committee: Ernest Hakanen, PhD, Wesley Shumar, PhD, Emily West, PhD & Mary Spiers, PhD for their advice and feedback. Thanks to Myles Ethan Lascity, PhD for his ongoing support and friendship throughout graduate school and to the other doctoral students in Culture, Communication, and Media at Drexel. Thanks to Cyndi Reed Rickards, PhD for her teaching mentorship. Thanks to my yoga teachers. Not only did they guide me through years of practice – from beginner to teacher – but started me on this process of inquiry. A special thanks to my yoga bestie, whose early morning texts helped me get out of bed and to class and to the other highly inquisitive minds that have practiced alongside me through the years. Finally, thank you to my mother, father, brother, and grandparents who were completely unsurprised when I decided to start a PhD program because they have never doubted my intellectual ability. Thank you to my maternal grandparents who will never know that I finished a PhD, but who constantly encourage me to read and explore.

SHADOW YOGA, CHAYA YOGA: THE PRINCIPLES OF HATHA YOGA PDF, EPUB, EBOOK Shandor Remete | 160 pages | 01 Feb 2010 | North Atlantic Books,U.S. | 9781556438769 | English | Berkeley, CA, United States Shadow Yoga, Chaya Yoga - North Atlantic Books Morning and evening classes are available. Hatha Yoga Mandapa also offers trial lessons, two week-long morning intensives and weekend workshops. Classes include prelude work sequences of preparatory movements and asanas static positions. More advanced practice includes pranayama breathing exercises and mudras hand and body gestures. Classes take place in small groups to guarantee individual assistance and support. The aim is to make the material accessible to students, enabling them to practise with inner peace, balance and well-being and to benefit from a joyful, uplifting home self-practice. The ancient Hatha Yoga texts tell us that a human being comprises five sheaths koshas and three bodies sharira. The three bodies are the gross physical body sthula sharira , the subtle body sukshma sharira and the causal body karana sharira. The koshas or 'shadows' include the gross structure annamaya kosha , the power principle pranamaya kosha , the mundane mind manomaya kosha , the intellect vijnanamaya kosha and the shadow of joy anandamaya kosha. Hatha Yoga has evolved with the purpose of dissolving these shadows so that we may realise the Inner Self Atman. In Shadow Yoga, the student is first introduced to preparatory work which includes warm- ups and simple, natural movements. Through repetition, these improve the quality of attention and increase both strength and flexibility. They serve as essential preparation for the more challenging asana work which comes later.
