Abstract: Current study was conducted to determine the diversity of cyprinid species of the family Cyprinidae found in Zebi Dam of District Karak, province of Pakistan during the period extends from November 2014 to April 2015. A total of six cyprinid species were collected and identified from Zebi dam include, Cirrhinus mrigala, Hypophthalmichthys molitrix, Labeo rohita, Carassius auratus Catla catla and Ctenopharyngodon idella, respectively. Thus, the resultsof the present study revealed that members of the family Cyprinidae were found to be highly abundant in Zebi dam of Karak district, which indicates that the environmental conditions of Zebi dam are more suitable for the growth of cyprinid species, hence, the present study will provides more useful information’s to the fish culturists and fisheries managers to promote the carp cultureand improve the conservations and management of thediversity of many carp species found in Zebi dam.

INTRODUCTION cyprinid species i.e., gold fishes are now popular ornamental aquarium and pond fishes. Due to increasing Karak is a district of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in demand, various species of family Cyprinidae i.e., province of Pakistan. It is situated in the south of Cyprinus carpio, catla catla, Labeo rohita and Kohat District and on the north sides of Bannu and Cirrhinus mrigala are now most commonly used for Lakki Marwat district. It is about 123 km away from the aquaculture purposes all around the world including provincial capital Peshawar. The greatest biodiversity of the includes true carps or minnows. Members of this family vertebrates is mostly exhibited by fishes because over are also known as cyprinids. It is the largest fish family 22,000 species of fishes had been identified throughout that includes 220 genera and 2,400 species. Cyprinids the world that includes 41% freshwater species, 58% have been considered as most important food fish for brackish and marine water, while 1% diandromous species humans throughout the world. Furthermore, many [6]. Therefore the study of fish’s diversity is very

Therefore, the changes in fins etc. biodiversity should be frequently scrutinized carefully, so they might manage the way of progress over the next RESULTS AND DISCUSSION decades [10]. The study of fish of Pakistan is known The result of the present study reveals that about six through a number of different studies conducted at species were collected and identified from Zebi dam of different places and times [11-13]. These studies are Karak district, which were belonging to one order, one useful in providing crucial information on species family and six genera, as shown in the Table 1 diversity and distribution in different areas. The respectively. freshwater fish fauna of Pakistan is represented by All the six species collected in the present a minimum of 193 fish species [14, 15]. Recent study were belonging to single family Cyprinidae contributions in fish fauna of Pakistan have been includes i.e., Cirrhinus mrigala, Hypophthalmichthys made by number of researchers including, Saeed et al. [16] molitrix, Labeo rohita, Carassius auratus Catla catla who reported 11 species from River Barandu District and Ctenopharyngodon idella. Thus, the results of Buner of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. Ishaq et al. present study revealed that most fish species occur in the [17] also identified 18 species from River Swat. Zebi dam are belonging to the family Cyprinidae. Hence Akhtar et al. [18] examined 18 fishes from Manglawar the members of the family Cyprinidae were found to be Valley of river Swat. Lately, Mengal et al. [19] observed highly abundant in Zebi dam of Karak district as four newfish species from Khanozi dam of Pishin compared to the other families. Our result was also in district, Balochistan. Haseeb et al. [20] described 11 agreements with Haseeb et al.[20], Hasan et al.[21] and species from Tanda Dam of Kohat district of Khyber Khan and Hasan [20] who also reported family Cyprinidae Pakhtunkhwa province. as the richest family represented by great number of Though, according to the previous published species found in freshwater reservoirs of various districts literature, various species of the family Cyprinidae and in Khyber Pakhtunkwa province of Pakistan. Another other fish families have also been reported in Zebi dam by eminent work on the Zebi dam, District Karakwas done several workers, however, some species have been by Ilyas [23] who reported about cyprinid species namely declined due to flood from last few years that a great Cyprinus carpio, Barilius vagra, Labeo rohita, number of fish species had been washed down. Therefore, Carassius auratus, Catla catla, Cirrhinus mrigala, the present study was conducted to gain knowledge Ctenopharyngodn idella, Puntius ticto, Puntius sophore, about the current status and diversity of various cyprinid Hypophthalmichthys molitrix, respectively. Our present species found in Zebi dam of Karak district as well as collection also contains six species from the above provides some valuable suggestions to fisheries mention species. managers to development a new the design and In Pakistan, there are about thirty economically construction of this dam for avoiding such type of loss important commercially fish species have been recorded again in the future. and among them, three species like Labeo rohita, Cirrhinus mrigala and Carassius auratus were MATERIALS AND METHODS reported in Zebi dam.
