INTRODUCTION The Tour de France is ”Grand Tour” equivalent of the Vuelta Espana or the Giro di Italia. However, the Tour de France is the most popular race in the world without hesitation. In the mind of racers, it is more important to win a Tour de France than a world championship. Win Tour de France shows polyvalent qualities of the winner. II. HISTORY A. Creation of the Tour de France The foundations of the Tour de France takes place on a national French scandal. At the end of the year 1984, Alfred Dreyfus who was captain in the French army at this time and by the way was Jew, was convicted to have given secret information to Germans. After several years and several justice judgements, it was proved that Alfred Dreyfus was not the author of the supposed high teason. However, France was separated in two parts: the dreyfusards and the antidreyfusards. The second important fact was that at this time, it was existing only one sport newspaper named ”Le Velo”. Pierre Giffard, the editor-in-chief, was politically committed and was writing in his sheet to denfend Dreyfus. However, his newspaper was financed through the advertisement by car industrials who were antidreyfusard. The Comte de Dion, who was the representative of car industrials, chose Henry Desgrange in order to create a rival newspaper named ”L’Auto-Velo”. A feature of this sheet is that it was published on a yellow paper which will be the colour of the leader jersey of the Tour de France. -

In the sprint, the Cofidis rider Nacer Bouhanni stayed close to glory after a fall that made his teammates work hard in the final part of the stage. Paris-Roubaix – The Queen of the Spring Classics Paris-Roubaix Created by Matt Scheffer Training Type: Threshold/Race Day Working HR Zones: Zone 3 to Zone 5 Total Class Length: 60 minutes Profile Description Paris Roubaix is the most famous of the “Spring Classic” races that take place in Northern Europe every spring. It is a long race at 257 km (~160 miles), end boasts such nicknames as “L’Enfer du Nord” (The Hell of the North) and the Queen of the Classics. Its defining feature is the cobbled sections of road or “pavé”. The Tour de France will be covering some of these famous cobbled sections in Stage 5 of this year’s race. (Note: Pavé is pronounced “pah-vay”). We will ride the cobbled sections between Zones 3–5 depending on the length and difficulty of the particular section. In between cobbled sections riders will try to maintain race pace and ride at high Zone 3- high Zone 4. There is small recovery in the middle of the race, which will take us down to Zone 2. Background of Paris-Roubaix Paris–Roubaix is a one-day race in northern France, one of the Spring Classics. The Spring Classics are a series of one day races all taking place in northern Europe that indicate the “real” start of the cycling season. While they are not nearly as well known as the grand tours that take place in the summer (the Giro d’Italia, the Tour de France) they are some of the most exciting races to watch.
