Would you like to have a go, with others, at growing your own vegetables? With the generous support of the St Helier Youth Committee it has been possible to turn a under-used piece of ground along the south side of St Mark’s Church into a vibrant new community garden.

Ten large raised planters and small benches have Main: Grow been provided so that folk in the local community can your own at come and grow their own vegetables. In the area St Mark’s around St Mark’s Church many of the residents don’t have access to a garden and miss being able to “grow their own”. Says Rector of St Marks, Reverend Martyn Shea: “With the cost of buying the weekly groceries going up and up, we thought that it would be great to be able to offer these allotments and planters to the local community. The ‘Green Beans’ project has not only done a fantastic job in transforming this area but they will also be providing training and support to those residents who want to grow their own organic vegetables.” Anyone who lives in the area of St Marks Church who is interested in the possibility of taking on one of these Community Allotments is asked to contact the church administrator, Ian MacFeeters, on telephone 720595 or email [email protected] The allotments will be free of charge but a small deposit is payable. Proposed allotments at Mont au Prêtre ‘Clos des Pauvres’ (Field 1310) The proposal to develop some 60 allotments on Parish- owned land at the top of Trinity Hill was featured in the Town Crier in February last year. A steering group was formed to work up proposals and a planning application made earlier this year. However, there has been considerable local opposition to the plans so the Parish is currently investigating the feasibility of creating allotments on other land in the Parish. That’s eight hours of trading, with fixed costs – rent, wages, social security, rates, utilities – with not a penny in income. I am that this is not an isolated example as I am being told that things are very tough indeed ‘on the high street’. True, there continue to be new businesses ready to step into the shoes of the ones that close in the precinct; true, our town centre is less at the mercy of out-of-town shopping than is the case elsewhere. We are also seeing the benefits of visible policing, increased resources for street cleansing, and plans are underway to increase the amount of litter bins (including recycling bins) and benches around town. But urgent action is needed if St Helier is to continue to beat paying for parking in Sand Street car park is overdue, and I would healthily as the Island’s retail heart. Centre Point Trust is a registered charity in Jersey and is a non-profit making organisation. www.centrepointtrust.co.uk June2012 p23 Progress in Parish care strategy In April last year the Town Crier carried an update on the Parish’s plans for the future of Maison de Ville residential home. The States’ regulatory authorities have stated that although it is a well-run and very caring home, the room sizes are too small, lack the en suite bathroom facilities that are expected in modern care homes, and in any case, the home will not meet the requirements of a new law due to be passed in 2014. Work has continued on a replacement for Maison de Ville, with a preferred option due to be put forward for consideration by parishioners and ratepayers at the Parish Assembly on 11th July 2012. All of the Parish’s care staff have been consulted, as decisions taken in relation to Maison de Ville could affect staff in the Parish’s two other residential homes, St Helier House and St Ewolds, as well as those who work in the two day nurseries, Westmount and Avranches. Senior staff have also visited some of the newest care facilities and sheltered housing projects in the south of .
