Community In 1965 Artesia, Bloomfield, and Carmenita School Districts unified and became known as the ABC Unified School District. The ABC Unified School District is representative of urban school districts throughout the United States. The community served by ABC Unified School District includes the cities of Artesia, Cerritos, Hawaiian Gardens, as well as portions of Lakewood, Long Beach, and Norwalk. Located in an attractive suburb on the southeast edge of Los Angeles County, the District is within easy driving distance to the major Southern California attractions, airports, and universities. The District is approximately 15 miles from beautiful Pacific Ocean beaches popular for their boating, surfing and sunning activities, and within two hours of mountain resorts for skiing and hiking. The ethnically and economically diverse community is strongly supportive of their ABC schools. The ABC Unified School District is known throughout the State of California as a leader in educational planning and innovation. The District has received county, state, and national recognition for outstanding programs in counseling, alternative education, staff development and labor relations. The ABC Unified School District is governed by a seven member Board of Education and includes nineteen elementary schools, five middle schools, three comprehensive high schools, a college prep 7-12 school, a continuation high school, infant/children centers, extended-day care, and adult school. Beautiful views of the San Gabriel Mountains surround the city. Baldwin Park covers 6.9 square miles and has a population of 72,029 people. The average household income is $33,029. The community of Baldwin Park consists of friendly, caring people who support their local schools. Many residents grew up in Baldwin Park and attended local schools, including many school district employees. Baldwin Park Unified School District is a K-12 district with a student enrollment of 17,514. The district, which operates on the traditional year calendar, has 12 elementary schools, a fundamental school, two middle schools, two junior high schools, two comprehensive high schools, a continuation high school, a Children's Center, a Latchkey program and a Head start Program. The district also operates an award-winning Adult & Continuing Education Program. The District employs 1089 classified employees (secretaries, custodians, instructional aides and support staff) and 1022 certificated employees (teachers, counselors, principals, administrators). The school district has a significant Latino population. Latinos constitute nearly 85% of the student enrollment. Asians make up 5.1%, Anglos are 4.8%, Filipinos are 2.9%, and African Americans are 1.8%. The District offers its teachers comparable wages to surrounding areas, based on graduate credits and years of experience. Bilingual teachers with certification receive an annual stipend of $1,000.
