During the late '80s and the '90s, a flurry of sadhu activism coincided with the dramatic rise of a previously insignificant political party, the Bhartiya JanataParty (BJP). As a conservative Hindu nationalist party, the BJP allied with many sadhus, came to power at the center and in many states, breaking the monopoly that the relatively secular Congress party had held for more than four decades. -
The Ever Growing Banyan Tree
Chapter 2 Spirituality in India: The Ever Growing Banyan Tree Comparing Western and Indian knowledge, Rolland (1960, p. 91) described Western knowledge as the “science of facts” and spirituality as “the science of the soul, a peculiarly Indian science.” A major difference between philosophy and spirituality, or for that matter religion and spirituality, is that spirituality, as prac- ticed in India, has an action bias over and above cognitive (thinking or thoughts) or value (considering something important) concerns. Spirituality has been valued in the Indian culture from time immemorial, and it is no surprise that many innova- tions in the field of spirituality originated in India. Since people strive to excel in areas that are compatible with their cultural values, India has seen the emergence of many geniuses in the field of spirituality even in the modern times. I combine two qualitative methods, historical analysis and case analysis, to document how spirituality is valued in India, and much like a banyan tree, how it continues to grow even today. An examination of the life of the list of spiritual gurus presented in the chapter shows that they were all practitioners, and they practiced what they preached. Also, the case analysis shows that Ramakrishna was a practitioner, and both the Maharishi and Rajneesh recommended daily practice of meditation. A historical evolution of spirituality in India is traced by generating a list of spiritual gurus over the last 2,500 years by using published sources both in the West (Kroeber, 1944) and in India. Following this historical analysis, three case studies are presented to illustrate that spirituality is valued even today in India, and this culture continues to produce eminent spiritual gurus. -

Shri Guru Charitra Introduction 1 Shri Guru-Charitra, a religious book giving a brief life story of "Shri Nrusimha Saraswati Swami Maharaj", was written in the 15th Century by one of his closest disciples. The 'Shri Guru Charitra' is the life of 'Shri Guru Dattatreya' (an incarnation of Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwara). It was originally written in Ovi form (a Marathi Metre) in Marathi by Shri Saraswati Gangadhar, whose ancestor Sayamdev had personally lived and served with devotion, Guru Narasimha Saraswati, an incarnation of Shri Dattatreya about 600 years ago. It was later translated into Sanskrit by Shri Vasudevananda Saraswati (Tembye Swamy), who is regarded by many as an incarnation of Shri Dattatreya and who lived about a hundred years ago. It has been later translated into several other languages. Shri Manik Prabhu Maharaj
SHRI MANIK PRABHU Guru Dattam mahaathamaanam bhaktha kaarya kalpadrumam Sakalamatha sthaapakam vandeham Manikya Prabhum Sri Manikya Prabhu was born as the second son to his parents Manohar Nayak Harakude and Bayadevi belonging to Srivatsa gotra, as a jewel from the treasure of their wombs on 12 th December of 1812 (on the auspicious day of Datta Jayanthi). His parents were devotees of Datta. Narasimha Saraswathi Swamy of Ganugapur was their favorite god. They did the parayana of Guru Charitra for sixteen years continuously without interruption. Pleased by their austerity and unswerving devotion, Lord Datta appeared and asked, “Desire anything, I will grant”. “We want a son like you” was the reply of the parents. As a result Lord Datta was born to them as their son. He was named “Manikya” by his parents. As the father of Manikya Prabhu died in his childhood, the burden of the family fell on the shoulders of his maternal uncle. Like Sri Krishna Manikya Prabhu too performed many ‘leelas' during his childhood to the astonishment of everybody. People started to believe him as the incarnation of Lord Datta. All his words were taken as prophecy and people called him ‘Vedaabhavu” (the silly brother). As a child he had many friends but liked ‘Govinda' most. They used to wander together. One day as Govinda did not turn up in time as he used to come every day, Manikya went to Govinda's house to enquire. At his house the relatives of Govinda were crying as he died suddenly. Manikya slowly approached Govinda, he shook him as if to wake him from sleep. -

Welcome to the latest issue of the Review. The Fort has been suffused with The SOBiR initiative was also launched and inaugurated with great gusto. This visitors, events and activities in the period just gone by. Everybody in the initiative aims to bring Old Boys from different parts of the world back to the school seems to be talking about how well the Platinum Debate & Quiz went or fort to share their wisdom and knowledge not only with the students but with how well the students marched on their ‘heels’ during the Independence Day the staff as well. The SOBiR initiative provides an opportunity to Old Boys to Parade. Whether it is the sultry weather or the extremely demanding routine, share and ‘give back’ to the school in a more structured and formal way. nothing seems to dampen the spirit of the students, although early morning rain is always appreciated (we all know why!!)… The Independence Day Parade was another exciting event that took place; all Houses performed very well and marched sprightly with discipline. Though The school welcomed many Old Boys from the Batch of 2000, several of them the March Past is long over, one can still see students iercely debating over the with their families who returned to the fort to celebrate the Crystal Jubilee controversial results. For now, the students can breathe a sigh of relief, until Reunion of their batch. -

Chapter Vi Religious Beliefs, Rituals and Festivals of Holeya Community
CHAPTER VI RELIGIOUS BELIEFS, RITUALS AND FESTIVALS OF HOLEYA COMMUNITY From historical records and ethnographic studies we find that aii societies have some form of religion though specific beliefs and practices vary widely - some groups attribute power to ghosts and ancestors; others to supernatural forces, some see their gods as benevelent others see them as mischieves, hostile or indifferent, some seek affirmation of their faith in solitude and wilderness; others erect pyramids, cathedrals or other monuments and maintain heirarchical priesthoods to inter code with the devine. Religion thus existed from the earliest phase of history, Archeological remains from stone age to Mohenzodaro speak the existence of religion. The process of civiliza tion brought a change in religious ideas as indeed in everything, Religion is a subject of great concern oven in advanced societies of today, where futility ot science has often compelled man to search for God or Supernatural power, SO that his faith in order of things is not absolutely lost. Science is based essentially on and cause effect theory and certain natural laws or axions. Religion is based on simple faith imoued with a sense of supernaturalisiu. Therefore, - 187 - religion is a fundamental expression of man and society, ordinarily implying devotion to a supreme being or beings, It is generally used to describe man's relation to devine or super human powers and the organised system of beliefs and worship in which these relations have been expressed. Anthropologists and Sociologists have been deeply concerned with the origin of religion and have tried to establish several theories about it.
