Received 26 February, 2015; Accepted 1 August, 2015 Sacred groves play a vital role in context of sustainable use and conservation of medicinal plants. The involvement of local communities offers several advantages in the management of traditionally known medicinal wealth of forests. Considering the importance of sacred groves in the conservation of medicinal plants, a study was carried out in Phulbani forest division of Odisha to record the status, distribution and use of medicinal plants in different sacred grove areas of this division. The study recorded about 40 medicinal plants (including trees, shrubs, herbs and climbers) across different sacred groves and their use for human welfare. The local people were consulted to know about the use of different medicinal plants and the existing management strategy. The study suggested the promotion of medicinal plant conservation through effective capacity building activities for the sacred grove committee members and local people to realize the goals of sustainability. Jharkhand Journal of Development and Management Studies XISS, Ranchi, Vol. 15, No.4, December 2017, pp.7507-7525 TRANSPORT LINKAGE ANALYSIS OF RURAL MARKETS IN PERIPHERAL BLOCKS OF RANCHI, JHARKHAND Shiv Kumar1 Transport linkages are the wealth of a nation. They act as a tool for social inclusion, economic development and environmental sustainability. Transport link communities and their agricultural produce to the main transport system and markets. This results in increased production and productivity, crop diversification and increased profitability. Network has great impact on rural markets. The selling and buying activity has increased to a large extent due to the inner-connecting lanes of the markets. One characteristic feature of the rural markets of Ranchi city and its periphery is that they have developed with close association with network i.e. transportation routes. In a city like Ranchi, two types of transport network predominate - Roadways and Railways. This paper aims to throw light on network of rural markets in the periphery of Ranchi city and assesses how they can be improved. The existing inadequacy of network in the peripheral area has been discussed in this study which is mainly based on the collection of primary data. A total of 52 rural markets were surveyed from 3 peripheral blocks (Kanke -20, Namkum -15 and Ratu -17 rural markets). The study concludes that the existence of rural markets is threatened due to the lack of connectivity as the producers/sellers are not getting adequate benefit from their produce as lot of profit is lost by the middlemen, cost of transport, perishable goods rot during the time taken to reach the market. -

ABSTRACT Proper identification and quality assurance of the raw material is an essential prerequisite to ensure reproducible quality of Ayurvedic medicines. Sweta Sariva (Hemidesmus indicus), commonly known as Indian Sarsaparilla is a well-known drug and is reputed for its Dahaprasamana (alleviates burning sensations), Deepana (appetizing) and Raktashodaka (blood purifying) properties. Root is the official part of Sweta Sariva. It is very popular in Kerala as a medicine and as a health drink. Hemidesmus indicus of Periplocaceae family is considered to be the genuine source plant of Sweta Sariva, but survey of commercial samples from various states of India reveal that at present root and root-stalk of five different botanically identified plants from dissimilar families are being sold as Sariva in different parts of the country. Here a study on the anatomical and powder characters of Sweta Sariva was done so that people can easily identify the Sweta Sariva from its adulterants. The genuine Hemidesmus indicus roots are very slender with a diameter less than 1cm and they possess a characteristic pleasant smell with a sweetish taste. In the transverse section there are plenty of starch grains, prismatic crystals of calcium oxalate crystals and lactiferous ducts are seen in the cortex portion which forms the major identifying features. -

LULC dynamics is invariably associated with various forms of land and ecological degradation. Identification of drivers and mechanism of LULC dynamics is also crucial for alleviation of land degradation. This paper investigates the Issue Issue spatio-temporal dynamics of LULC and demography and their inter-relationship in the different administrative blocks located within parts of Subarnarekha watershed, Jharkhand state, India, which comprises a large 14 concentration of tribal population. The investigation was conducted in two successive time gradients i.e. 1987- 2000 and 2000-2013 corresponding to the pre- and post-state formation in order to assess the impact of urbanization on the LULC dynamics and demographic characteristics subsequent to the formation of the state. Three indices viz. Net Change Ratio, Annual Rate of Change and Single Index of Dynamic Extent were used to determine the spatio-temporal dynamics of five major LULC categories viz. builtup, builtup with vegetation, Volume Volume cropland, dense vegetation, and sparse vegetation with scrubs, while the demographic parameters used are namely Population Density, House Hold Density and percent Tribal Population. -

This study is aimed at providing a critical review of the pharmacological properties, phytochemistry, and medicinal uses of B. adoensis. Documented information on the pharmacological properties, phytochemistry, and medicinal uses of B. adoensis was collected from several online sources which included Scopus, Google Scholar, PubMed and Science Direct. Additional information on the pharmacological properties, phytochemistry, and medicinal uses of B. adoensis was gathered from pre-electronic sources such as book chapters, books, journal articles, and scientific publications sourced from the university library. The articles published between 1962 and 2020 were used in this study. This study showed that the roots, flowers, stems, and leaves of B adoensis are widely used as ethnoveterinary medicine and traditional medicines for backbone pain, reproductive problems, kidney diseases, fever and febrile complaints, wounds, ulcers, sexually transmitted infections, skin complaints, malaria, gastro-intestinal problems and respiratory problems. Abstract Mesosphaerum suaveolens L. (Kuntze) is a perennial, erect, annual and aromatic herb that may grow up to height of 2m. Mesosphaerum suvaveolens methanolic extract fractionization was carried out in chloroform. From chloroform fraction triterpenoid was isolated by column chromatography. Triterpenoid identification did via chemical test, physical properties, TLC pattern. Then, the confirmation of chemical constituents was carried out by instrumental techniques as; UV, IR, MS and NMR. The tetracyclic triterpenoid stigmasterol structure interpreted at lastly. The ethanobotanical survey claim the valuable plant used for treating inflammation and rheumatoid arthritis (RA), No doubt, the further investigation must be needed for determining different pharmacological activity and medicinal use of Mesosphaerum suaveolens. But, at this level the present study claim that the stated activity is because of stigmasterol, because in inflammation and RA the steroids and triterpenoid play a vital role.
