As with any idea, it is difficult to measure and cite, after a few years, all the people involved in the development of this project. The beginning of the idea to research Pentecostalism occurred to me during one of the amazing classes given by Professor Fernando Londoño, while I was doing my master’s in Religious Studies (or the Science of Religion, in Brazil) at the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo (PUC-SP). I would also like to thank my dear Pentecostal friends at PUC-SP, especially Vagner Marques and Adaílson Souza, who helped me a lot with my bibliography and citations. Vagner and Adaílson also helped by commenting on my ideas and even helping me to choose the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God as an object of study. Without them, I would be more misguided than I naturally am. The idea of doing a PhD outside Brazil was hugely influenced by my colleague Raphael Uchôa, who provided me with much information about the academic requirements for getting into the United Kingdom. I also had the help of my former supervisor Eduardo Cruz and other professors like Maria do Rosado Nunes and José J. Queiroz, who wrote more than kind letters of recommendation for me, in support of my application to the University of Warwick. To them go my most sincere thanks. Another person important for my adventure of doing a PhD at Warwick was my supervisor Claire Blencowe, who was not only very helpful ever since our first conversation, but who also asked Steve Fuller to be my co-supervisor at that time. Both made significant corrections to and comments on my research. In the United Kingdom, my thanks go to all my colleagues in the Department of Sociology at the University of Warwick, especially those who entered in the academic year of 2014 and attended classes with me. In the article, selected concepts of leadership are applied in the background of the theories of a religious field, existential security, and the market theory of religion, to analyze the case of the IURD leadership political involvement and bishop/mayor Crivella’s city management before and during the pandemic, in order to show how his office constitutes an important part of the strategies of growth implemented by the IURD charismatic leader Edir Macedo, the founder and the head of this religious institution and, at the same time, Crivella’s uncle. The authors prove how Crivella’s policies mingle the religious and the political according to Macedo’s political alliances at the federal level, in order to strengthen the church and assure its political influence.     97 Crivella e a Igreja Universal: inserção no espaço público, estratégias e política eleitoral Gabriel Rezende1 RESUMO A proposta do presente artigo é compreender como a identidade religiosa perpassa os campos normativos e racionais da esfera pública, enalteceremos assim, a Igreja Universal do Reino de Deus (IURD) e os seus contornos políticos partidários. Em que se objetiva tratar do modus operandi político da IURD, prefigurando os pleitos disputados pelo político e bispo licenciado da Igreja Universal, Marcelo Crivella, em suas sucessivas campanhas para o executivo fluminense e carioca: 2004, 2006, 2008, 2014; antes de sua vitória em 2016. Demonstrando a presença/circulação indiscutível do religioso em busca de eficácia política, que gera um adensamento em discursos político-religiosos como fonte de capital social.     Religion and black cultural identity Roman Catholics, Afro-Brazilians and Neopentecostalism Vagner Gonçalves da Silva Abstract Over the last decade, a number of religious groups have assumed differing positions on the relationship between ‘black identity’ and religion. In this article, I intend to present some of the tendencies in the current debate between the Afro-Brazilian religions and the black Roman Catholic and Evangelical movements. I suggest that this debate be constructed from positions engendered from the interrelationships of these groups and from the policies for promoting the legacy of African symbols as a part of Brazil’s national heritage. However, considering that during the last few decades a number of religious movements, in addition to the Afro-Brazilian ones, including the Black Catholic and Evangelical move- ments, have assumed certain positions on the relationship between ‘black identity’ and religion, this article intends to present some of the tendencies of the contemporary debate between these three religious fields.     NO. 46 OCTOBER 2018 Introduction Evangelicals and Politics in Latin America Religious Switching and Its Growing Political Relevance Claudia Zilla Jair Messias Bolsonaro, the former army captain and recently elected Brazilian presi- dent from the Social Liberal Party (PSL) with the campaign slogan “Brazil above every- thing; God above everyone”, is a paramount example of the linkage between politics and Evangelical values, interests, and actors in Latin America: In May 2016, Bolsonaro was baptised in the Jordan River by Pastor Everaldo Pereira, a prominent leader of the Assembly of God church and the head of the Social Christian Party (PSC); pictures and videos of the ceremony were circulated on the internet. Bolsonaro counted on the support of the Evangelical Parliamentary Front of the National Congress, comprising 199 deputies with diverse party affiliations and 60 percent of the Evangelical elec- torate’s voting intention for the electoral run-off. Edir Macedo, founder of the Uni- versal Church of the Kingdom of God and owner of the second largest media network in Brazil, endorsed Bolsonaro’s candidacy and broadcasted a favourable interview with him on his TV programme. In Latin America, candidates with conservative-value agendas and strong positions on authority and order as well as against crime and cor- ruption are especially attractive to the rapidly growing number of Evangelical churches and believers in the region. At the same time, they have become an important target group of politicians of different parties searching for support.
