    The Most Reverend and Right Hon the Lord Archbishop of Canterbury & The Most Reverend and Right Hon the Lord Archbishop of York July, 2008 Most Reverend Fathers in God, We write as bishops, priests and deacons of the Provinces of Canterbury and York, who have sought, by God’s grace, in our various ministries, to celebrate the Sacraments and preach the Word faithfully; to form, nurture and catechise new Christians; to pastor the people of God entrusted to our care; and, through the work of our dioceses, parishes and institutions, to build up the Kingdom and to further God’s mission to the world in this land. Our theological convictions, grounded in obedience to Scripture and Tradition, and attentive to the need to discern the mind of the whole Church Catholic in matters touching on Faith and Order, lead us to doubt the sacramental ministry of those women ordained to the priesthood by the Church of England since 1994. Having said that, we have engaged with the life of the Church of England in a myriad of ways, nationally and locally, and have made sincere efforts to work courteously and carefully with those with whom we disagree. In the midst of this disagreement over Holy Order, we have, we believe, borne particular witness to the cause of Christian unity, and to the imperative of Our Lord’s command that ‘all may be one.’ We include those who have given many years service to the Church in the ordained ministry, and others who are very newly ordained. We believe that we demonstrate the vitality of the tradition which we represent and which has formed us in our discipleship and ministry – a tradition which, we believe, constitutes an essential and invaluable part of the life and character of the Church of England, without which it would be deeply impoverished.

    CR NUMBER 444 Review EPIPHANY 2014 QUARTERLY REVIEW OF THE QUARTERLY COMMUNITY OF THE RESURRECTION www.annasikorska.co.uk Picture Prayer Meditation "You are very near to us" The image for the picture meditation comes from a sculptural work by Anna Sikorska, the artist in residence at CR for 2013, a programme organised by the Northern Sacred Art Foundation. Anna’s sculptures challenge our relationship to the found world around us and our expectations of how we live in the world. They help us to live a little more deeply, a little more imaginatively, and encourage us to wake up to the places and situations we find ourselves in every day. “…the float takes us underwater; thinking about/reaching to the place above the surface where you can breathe; resting on the surface; finding a resting place; the lowered bed (the picked-up bed); breaking through the roof - breaking in or out; being stuck under the float (dangerous place!); an echo board; it is above where the font would be …” Anna Sikorska. This work reminds me a lot of the story in the Gospels of Jesus healing the paralysed man after he is lowered down to him through a hole dug in the roof (Mark 2: 3-5). This happened because the house Jesus was in was so full of people wanting to see him; it was a desperate attempt to reach Jesus. For me this visual image of the mattress can seem to be about a meeting of heaven and earth – the mattress comes down from above, moving between one world to another; from a place of needing healing to the place of being healed; breaking through from one reality to another, to the very place where Jesus is.

  • The Bishop of Chichester Has Issued a Formal Apology Following the Settlement of a Legal Civil Claim Regarding Sexual Abuse Against the Right
    The Bishop of Chichester has issued a formal apology following the settlement of a legal civil claim regarding sexual abuse against the Right Reverend George Bell, who was Bishop of Chichester from 1929 until his death on 3rd October 1958. The allegations against Bell date from the late 1940s and early 1950s and concern allegations of sexual offences against an individual who was at the time a young child. Following settlement of the claim the serving Bishop of Chichester, the Right Reverend Dr. Martin Warner, wrote to the survivor formally apologising and expressing his "deep sorrow" acknowledging that "the abuse of children is a criminal act and a devastating betrayal of trust that should never occur in any situation, particularly the church." Bishop Warner paid tribute to the survivor's courage in coming forward to report the abuse and notes that "along with my colleagues throughout the church, I am committed to ensuring that the past is handled with honesty and transparency." Tracey Emmott, the solicitor for the survivor, today issued the following statement on behalf of her client: "The new culture of openness in the Church of England is genuinely refreshing and seems to represent a proper recognition of the dark secrets of its past, many of which may still not have come to light. While my client is glad this case is over, they remain bitter that their 1995 complaint was not properly listened to or dealt with until my client made contact with Archbishop Justin Welby's office in 2013. That failure to respond properly was very damaging, and combined with the abuse that was suffered has had a profound effect on my client's life.
