In antiquity, Greek settlers founded a network of cities all around the Mediterranean and Black Seas. By the fourth century BC, these colonies stretched from Spain to Syria and from Libya to the Ukraine. As they relied on the sea for connections with other Greeks, these colonies mostly stuck close to the shore – “like ants or frogs around a pond”, as Plato once quipped. Some of these colonies went on to become world-famous cities, such as Marseilles, Naples and Syracuse. Others are less famous today, but their stories are no less fascinating. ASA’s Adriatic Journey visits several former Greek colonies on the Croatian coast. One of these colonies has a particularly interesting history. The town of Stari Grad sits on the beautiful island of Hvar. Today Stari Grad is a quiet seaside settlement of 2000 people. Many of its cobblestone streets and stone buildings date from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. But its origins go back to 385 or 384 BC, when a group of Greeks from the island of Paros founded a colony there, which they cheekily called Pharos in memory of their homeland. DAY Ljubljana arrival Arrival at Ljubljana airport, where you'll be met by the local guide/driver who will take you to the hotel. Free 1 time for relaxation and, in the afternoon, sightseeing tour of the old town. Overnight in Ljubljana. DAY Ljubljana – Lakes Bled & Bohinj – Ljubljana In the morning we start the private tour in Slovenia with a drive to Bled to admire the beautiful Alpine lake with its charming island and castle 130 metres above the lake. We then drive deeper into the Julian Alps to 2 explore another Alpine pearl – Bohinj, with a cable car ride to Mt. Vogel. In the evening transfer to Ljubljana. DAY Ljubljana – Idrija – Ljubljana After breakfast, we drive towards Idrija to visit the UNESCO protected mercury mine which used to be one of the largest in the world. Visit of the mine and short walk through the town centre. In the afternoon we drive 3 back to Ljubljana. Overnight in Ljubljana. DAY Ljubljana – Škocjan Caves – Poreč – Rovinj Our drive takes us to another UNESCO site in Slovenia – the Škocjan Caves. Later we head towards Croatia and its northern coastal region, Istria. Our next visit is Poreč and the Euphrasian Basilica from the 6th century 4 – another UNESCO site. In the afternoon drive to and overnight in Rovinj.

    WHV – Volunteers for Stari Grad Plain Stari Grad Plain, Croatia Cultural property inscribed on the List of World 01/09/2021 – 10/09/2021 Heritage since 2008 Stari Grad Plain on the Adriatic island of Hvar is a cultural landscape that has remained practically intact since Ionian Greeks from Paros first colonized it in the 4th century BC. The original agricultural activity of this fertile plain, mainly centring on grapes and olives, has been maintained since Greek times to the present. The site is also a natural reserve. The landscape features ancient stone walls and trims, or small stone shelters, and bears testimony to the ancient geometrical system of land division used by the ancient Greeks, the chora which has remained virtually intact over 24 centuries. Project objectives: The project aims at promoting the World Heritage property through the active participation of the volunteers in restoration work along with the local community, and at raising awareness about heritage preservation. Project activities: The volunteers will support the reconstruction of the dry-stone walls that were ruined or removed when the landing field was built, under the supervision of experts. The goal of the project is to restore them by using the traditional building technology and to achieve particularly, the complete restoration of a plot of land called striga (ancient Greek), as in the time of the Greek colonisation and division of Stari Grad Plain. The volunteers will also engage in planting Mediterranean plants by the walls: olives on the north side along the main road, and lavenders or immortelles on the east and west side.
