We have quite a full house today. I welcome the audience. This is a formal Senate hearing, and in order to allow the Committee to conduct its business, we will maintain decorum. That means if there are disorders, demonstrations by a member of the audience, the person causing the disruption will be escorted from the room by the Capitol Police. 4. IOWA Iowa is the state famous for holding presidential caucuses rather than a presidential primary. There is a good reason for that. The state of New Hampshire has a tradition of holding the first presidential primary. In fact, New Hampshire has a law requiring that the New Hampshire primary be one week before the presidential primary of any other state. By scheduling caucuses rather than a primary, Iowa is able to hold its caucuses ahead of New Hampshire and thereby escape the political ire of New Hampshirites. Iowa also thus prevents New Hampshire from scheduling its primary one week ahead of the presidential caucuses in Iowa. That is what that famous New Hampshire law would require if Iowa held a primary. It was in 1972 that Iowa first scheduled its "First In The Nation" presidential caucuses. Four years later, in 1976, the Iowa caucuses were propelled to major importance when Jimmy Carter, a little-known former governor of Georgia, devoted virtually a year of his life to campaigning in Iowa. Carter's surprise victory in the Iowa caucuses made him the instant front-runner for the Democratic nomination. It was an advantage which Carter exploited so well he was eventually elected president of the United States. But there is also a downside to the Iowa caucuses for presidential hopefuls. Iowa can be the burial ground for a candidacy instead of the launching pad. That is what happened to U.S. Senator Ted Kennedy of Massachusetts in 1980 when he challenged incumbent President Jimmy Carter for the Democratic nomination. President Carter polled 59 percent of the Iowa caucuses vote to 31 percent for Kennedy. -

J _j. c files this complaint seeking an immediate investigation by the 7 c; a > Federal Election Commission into the illegal spending A* practices of the National Republican Senatorial Campaign Committee (WRSCIt). As the public record shows, and an investigation will confirm, the NRSC and a series of ostensibly nonprofit, nonpartisan groups have undertaken a significant and sustained effort to funnel "soft money101 into federal elections in violation of the Federal Election Campaign Act of 1971, as amended or "the Act"), 2 U.S.C. 5s 431 et seq., and the Federal Election Commission (peFECt)Regulations, 11 C.F.R. 85 100.1 & sea. 'The term "aoft money" as ueed in this Complaint means funds,that would not be lawful for use in connection with any federal election (e.g., corporate or labor organization treasury funds, contributions in excess of the relevant contribution limit for federal elections). THE FACTS IN TBIS CABE On November 24, 1992, the state of Georgia held a unique runoff election for the office of United States Senator. Georgia law provided for a runoff if no candidate in the regularly scheduled November 3 general election received in excess of 50 percent of the vote. The 1992 runoff in Georg a was a hotly contested race between the Democratic incumbent Wyche Fowler, and his Republican opponent, Paul Coverdell. The Republicans presented this election as a %ust-win81 election. Exhibit 1. The Republicans were so intent on victory that Senator Dole announced he was willing to give up his seat on the Senate Agriculture Committee for Coverdell, if necessary. -

Executive Branch Office of the Attorney General Constitution, Article 6 § 1 W.A. Drew Edmondson, Democrat, was born in Washington, D.C., on October 12, 1946. Educated in the public schools of Washington, D.C., and Muskogee, Oklahoma, he graduated from Muskogee Central High School in 1964. He attended Northeastern State University in Tahlequah on a debate scholarship and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in speech education in 1968. Following graduation, he enlisted in the United States Navy and had a tour of duty in Vietnam from 1971 to 1972. In 1974 he was elected to the Oklahoma Legislature and served two years. In 1976 Edmondson entered the University of Tulsa Law School and graduated in December 1978. Edmondson worked as an intern in the district attorney’s office in Muskogee in 1978, and as an assistant district attorney in 1979 before entering private practice. He rejoined the district attorney’s office as chief prosecutor in 1982. In 1982, 1986, and 1990, Edmondson was elected, unopposed, district attorney of Muskogee County. Edmondson is a member of the Oklahoma Bar Association, a former member of the National and the Oklahoma District Attorneys associations, and in August 1983, was elected president of the Oklahoma District Attorneys Association. He was selected Outstanding District Attorney for the State of Oklahoma in 1985 and was appointed to the District Attorneys Council by the Board of Governors of the Oklahoma Bar Association. In 1992 Edmondson joined Mark Green in private practice, and in March 1994, Edmondson announced his candidacy for the office of Attorney General and was elected in November that same year. -

Stoicism at War: from Epictetus and Marcus Aurelius to James Stockdale
Konrad Banicki Jagiellonian University, Cracow, Poland Institute of Applied Psychology STOICISM AT WAR: FROM EPICTETUS AND MARCUS AURELIUS TO JAMES STOCKDALE Abstract The chapter is devoted to the analysis of ancient Stoic philosophy as a source of resil- ience for soldiers. Firstly, some historical cases are investigated, from a Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius to more recent instances from Vietnam and Iraq. Secondly, in turn, the Epictetus’ distinction between the controllable and the uncontrollable is introduced with the focus on the prescription to assign value only to the former as the Stoic source of resilience. Finally, some further questions are briefly addressed including the ones concerning the sources of the Stoicism’s appeal to the soldiers, its more particular ap- plications as well as the potential drawbacks of the Stoic resilience.
