2019-20 Men's Basketball 2019-20 MEN’S BASKETBALL Record: 19-12 (12-6 BIG EAST, 4th Place) Head Coach: Ed Cooley • Providence completed the season with a 19-12 overall record and a 12-6 mark in the BIG EAST Conference (fourth place). The 12 league wins marked the most ever for a Friar men’s basketball team in BIG EAST play. It marked the sixth time in the last seven years that the Friars won 10 or more games in BIG EAST play. • The Friars won five games in February versus ranked teams making them just the fifth team in the history of college basketball to register five wins over ranked squads in a calendar month during the regular season. • The Friars won six consecutive games and eight of last 10 to close the BIG EAST season. Six consecutive league wins ties the team’s all-time high. • For first time in the history of the program, the Friars defeated every BIG EAST team at least once in the regular season. • Since the formation of the new BIG EAST, the Friars have posted the third best mark in league play over the last seven years. The Friars’ 70-56 mark (.556) trails only Villanova’s 103-23 record (.817) and Xavier’s 74-52 record (.587). • The Friars NET ranking increased from 156 to 37 over the final 13 games of the season. The largest increase (119 spots) of the 353 NCAA Division I teams from December 19 to March 13. The Friars produced a combined 12-8 mark versus Quad 1 (7-8) and Quad 2 (5-0) opponents. • Alpha Diallo, who earned Second Team All-BIG EAST accolades, finished his career with 1,591 points (14th all-time in scoring). • Graduate student Emmitt Holt became the first Friar ever to earn the BIG EAST Sportsmanship Award. He shared the award with Butler senior Kamar Baldwin and Georgetown senior Jagan Mosely. Holt, who missed almost two full seasons of action due to abdominal surgery, returned for a sixth season in 2019-20 and averaged 4.8 points and 3.7 points per game. 2019-20 HONORS AND AWARDS - MEN’S BASKETBALL Preseason All-BIG EAST John Zannini Coaches’ Award Alpha Diallo (First Team) Nate Watson BIG EAST Player of the Week Ryan Gomes Most Improved Player Award Alpha Diallo (Feb. 17) David Duke BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll Sixth Man Award Alpha Diallo (Nov. 11, Jan. 13, Mar. 8) Maliek White David Duke (Dec. 16, Jan. 20) Luwane Pipkins (Jan. 6, Feb. 3, Feb. 24, Mar. 2) Unsung Hero Award Emmitt Holt All-BIG EAST Alpha Diallo (Second Team) Marvin Barnes Defensive Player Award Kalif Young BIG EAST Sportsmanship Award Emmitt Holt Jimmy Walker Most Valuable Player Award Alpha Diallo USBWA All-District 1 Luwane Pipkins Alpha Diallo David Duke BIG EAST All-Academic Team Tommy Dempsey Thomas Ramos Academic Award Alpha Diallo Andrew Fonts David Duke Andrew Fonts Coca-Cola Most Promising Prospect Award Greg Gantt Greg Gantt Emmitt Holt Luwane Pipkins Lenny Wilkens Hustle Award A.J. Early Friday morning, Joe Biden took the lead in Pennsylvania, a very promising sign for the Biden campaign, as Biden sought to turn the state blue after Hillary Clinton failed to do so in the 2016 presidential election. With Biden winning Pennsylvania and leading in Georgia, President Donald Trump’s hopes at reelection were squashed—without Georgia or Pennsylvania, he could not gain enough electoral votes to win reelection. In a speech given on Thursday, Nov. 5, President Trump indicated his intentions to preserve the integrity of the election by bringing the results to the courts, saying there would be “a tremendous amount of litigation,” and that he would not “allow anyone the ability to steal such an important election.” He also urged officials to stop counting votes, tweeting “STOP THE COUNT!” On Nov. 6, Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito temporarily granted a GOP request to have mail-in ballots received after Nov. 3 in Pennsylvania separated, but he did not prohibit them from being counted.
