Ghouse Basha* P.G and Research Department of Botany, Jamal Mohamed College (Autonomous) Tiruchirapalli – 620020, Tamil Nadu, India *Corresponding Author E-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT The aim of the study is to illuminate the traditional behaviors, activities, special functions and record the medicinal system of native peoples of kalrayan hill. A standard questionnaire was used to gather the relevant information on plants and their usage of tribal people’s life. Interviews and detailed documentation were carried out during July 2011 to May 2013.The traditional beliefs and customs of tribal people passed on by word of mouth were recorded. Totally 108 medicinally used plant species of 90 genera belongs to 50 families were documented with the help of tribal practitioners. The study also recorded the mode of preparations, mode of administration of medicinal plants to their corresponding ailments. The study concluded that the native peoples of kalrayan hill have good medicinal knowledge and also maintained plant based medicinal system from their ancestors. This type of study may helpful to the Ayurvedic practitioners and also plant based medicinal system. Keywords: Folklore, Ethnomedicines, Kalrayan Hill, Eastern Ghats, Tamil Nadu. It was called by different name in different period, it is popular being Venad, Vanchidesam and Tiruadidesam. Venad is originally known as Vanavanad which Merans the abode of the Dedvas. This was later simplified into Venad. Vanchi Desam means either the land of treasure or the land Baboons. In Malayalam the name of Travancore was interpreted by ‘Thiruvithamkure’ and in Sankrit ‘Srivardhanapuri’.     TRIBAL LAND RIGHTS IN INDIA About Centre for Rural Studies The Centre for Rural Studies (formerly Land Reforms Unit) of Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration was set C. Ashokvardhan up in the year 1989 by the Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India, with a multifaceted agenda that included among others, the concurrent evaluation of the ever-unfolding ground realities pertaining to the implementation of the Land Reforms and Poverty Alleviation Programmes in India. Sensitizing the Officer Trainees of the Indian Administrative Service in the process of evaluating of land reforms and poverty alleviation programmes by exposing them to the ground realities; setting up a forum for regular exchange of views on land reforms and poverty alleviation between academicians, administrators, activists and concerned citizens and creating awareness amongst the public about the various programmes initiated by the government of India through non-governmental organizations are also important objectives of the Centre for Rural Studies.     Kodaiyar River Basin Introduction One of the oldest systems in Tamil Nadu is the “Kodaiyar system” providing irrigation facilities for two paddy crop seasons in Kanyakumari district. The Kodaiyar system comprises the integrated operation of commands of two major rivers namely Pazhayar and Paralayar along with Tambaraparani or Kuzhithuraiyur in which Kodaiyar is a major tributary. The whole system is called as Kodaiyar system. Planning, development and management of natural resources in this basin require time-effective and authentic data.The water demand for domestic, irrigation, industries, livestock, power generation and public purpose is governed by socio – economic and cultural factors such as present and future population size, income level, urbanization, markets, prices, cropping patterns etc. Water Resources Planning is people oriented and resources based. Data relating to geology, geomorphology, hydrogeology, hydrology, climatology, water quality, environment, socio – economic, agricultural, population, livestock, industries, etc. are collected for analysis. For the sake of consistency, other types of data should be treated in the same way. Socio – economic, agricultural and livestock statistics are collected and presented on the basis of administrative units located within this basin area. Location and extent of Kodaiyar Basin The Kodaiyar river basin forms the southernmost end of Indian peninsula. The basin covers an area of 1646.964 sq km. The flanks of the entire basin falls within the TamilnaduState boundary. Tamiraparani basin lies on the north and Kodaiyar basin on the east and Neyyar basin of Kerala State lies on the west. This is the only river basin which has its coastal border adjoining the Arabian sea, the Indian Ocean in the south and the Gulf of Mannar in the east.

Annandale (1919), Distant (1903; 1906; 1909 ; 1910a & 1910b), Dover (1928), Horvath (1915) and Paiva (1919a & 1919b) were a few of the earliest to contribute to our knowledge of the aquatic and semi-aquatic bugs of the country. Chen (1960), Hafiz & Mathai (1938), Hafiz and Riberio (1939), Hafiz & Pradhan (1947), Hutchinson (1933), Pradhan (1950a & 1950b) also rendered some information on the Indian aquatic bugs.
