• Announcing REEL CHANGE: the Fund for Diversity in Film Scoring
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Press Contact: Brigid Pierce, New Music USA [email protected] More Information: newmusicusa.org Announcing REEL CHANGE: The Fund for Diversity in Film Scoring powered by SESAC and Christophe Beck and managed by New Music USA New York, NY (October 27, 2020) – New Music USA announces the launch of Reel Change: The Fund for Diversity in Film Scoring, powered by SESAC and composer Christophe Beck, and administered by New Music USA. Responding to the fact that the vast majority of films are scored by white men, Reel Change is a five-year grants and mentorship program for composers of diverse backgrounds who have been marginalized in film composition. This fund – which is now accepting applications from US-based composers – supports film projects currently in production, where additional funding and mentoring would help composers at a pivotal moment in their careers. Four to six grants averaging $20,000 will be allocated each year of the program. Supportable expenses include composer compensation, musician fees, recording and sound mastering fees, studio expenses, orchestration, production equipment, and more. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling timeline by an advisory board made up of leading composers of film music, including Christophe Beck, Jongnic “JB” Bontemps, Kris Bowers, Miriam Cutler, Chanda Dancy, Tony Morales, and Pinar Toprak. Members of this advisory board will offer additional support and mentorship for interested applicants. Information and applications are available here. _____________________________________________________________________________________ Composer Christophe Beck says: “For too long, the community of composers who create scores for Hollywood films has been dominated by white men. Throughout my career, I’d been aware of this and told myself that someday, I’d like do something about it.

Film Music: History and Function from 1930 to Present Units: 4 Term—Day—Time: Fall 2020—Tuesdays and Thursdays—4:00–5:50pm (Pacific Time) Location: ONLINE Instructor: Tim Greiving Office: Virtual Office Hours: Virtually anytime Contact Info: [email protected] Course Description Music is the soul of film. Film scores can animate, enhance, pump blood into, subvert, and often transcend their movie. This underlooked, underappreciated art form is almost 100 years old—still an infant compared to its predecessors like opera, ballet, and theatre music, but old enough to have a rich, fascinating history worth exploring. In this course we’ll take a trip through that history, at times skimming along the surface, at times diving deep. With the aid of film clips, live watch parties, and the occasional special guest, you’ll gain a solid knowledge of and appreciation for the most-heard, least-noticed art form of the past century. (Because we’re cramming one hundred years of history into a single—shortened!—semester, we’ll primarily focus on Hollywood film music, although a few classes will be devoted to international films and composers. We’ll also limit our study to feature films, without spending time on television or videogame music.) Recommended Reading • King Kong chapter from Music by Max Steiner, by Steven. C. CIN EM ATIC HEROES AND HEROINES SAT 24 APR 2021 CONCERT HALL, QPAC PROGRAM | CINEMATIC I CONTENTS WELCOME 1 IF YOU'RE NEW TO THE ORCHESTRA 2 LISTENING GUIDE 6 ARTIST BIOGRAPHY 14 SUPPORTING YOUR ORCHESTRA 24 MUSICIANS AND MANAGEMENT 26 II PROGRAM | CINEMATIC WELCOME A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away… a room full of musicians donned some wacky costumes and performed their favourite movie music. It’s my absolute pleasure to welcome you to our annual CINEMATIC concert and tell you why this concert means so much to me. Music can create tension or joy and keep you on the edge of your seat, and films have an incredible way of weaving story and music together to keep your eyes glued to the screen. Many film composers use the full might of a symphony orchestra to make audiences feel something, but the film industry can’t be credited for inventing emotional, edge-of-your-seat music. Classical music has been manipulating your emotions for hundreds of years, long before the invention of cinema. So, if you love movie music, you love classical music! When someone says to me, “I don’t understand classical music,” I say, “Yes, you do - you just don’t know it yet!” This year’s concert theme is Heroes and Heroines and as a horn player there are some fun horn features to look forward to. Many film scores give us a moment to shine - look out for us in the back left of the stage pumping out some heroic music from Star Wars, The Man From Snowy River and Gladiator.

Eschenfelder Master of Arts School of Music and Dance June 2019 Title: Musical Narratives: Thematic Combination and Alignment in Fantasy and Superhero Films Musical themes in film are often transformed in ways that reflect major plot developments. Film music scholars typically explore such transformations across an entire film. However, this broad analytical brush misses the intricate ways themes can reflect narrative development in a single scene. In this thesis, I provide two musical techniques that demonstrate this intricacy. I first examine how themes are used in superhero battle sequences to outline the battle’s internal development and its function in the film’s overall plot. Case studies include Captain America (2011) and Wonder Woman (2017). Second, I explore how preexisting themes are combined into a new theme using musical techniques that reflect the relationship between the themes’ subjects, looking closely at “Anakin’s Theme” from the Star Wars saga and “The Edge of Night” from the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
