The westernmost peridotite outcrops in the Mediterranean Basin are situated in the south of the Iberian Peninsula (Andalusia) where they cover a total area of 430 km2 (IGME, 1970 and 1981), with an altitudinal range from 100 to 1500 m occupying three bioclimatic belts (Pérez Latorre & al., 1998). South-Iberian peridotites have frequently been con- verted into serpentines by hydrolysis (Yusta & al., 1985). The flora and plant communities of Andalusian peridotites have been studied by several authors, including Rivas Goday Fig. 1. The study area is located in the Bermejense biogeographical sector (Baetic province, Mediterranean region) and shows a Mediterranean pluviseasonal- oceanic bioclimate. Most of the outcrop is altered by urban planning linked to tourism and affected by invasive alien species. Three areas remain more intact. A catalogue of vascular flora has been completed, made up of 168 taxa, including three threatened species, four obligate serpentinophytes, one preferential serpentinophyte, and one subserpentinophyte (majority of populations on serpentine). Seven taxa are South-Iberian ultramafic endemics. Silene inaperta subsp. serpentinicola is an obligate serpentinophyte and threatened endemism.

After finding rooms and getting settled, the group assembled in shade round the pool for a light lunch. I n the afternoon we walked down the hill into the centre of town, looking at the impressive array of street trees and garden plants as we went. Funchal is very much a garden city, with diverse and well-maintained planting. The Agathis robusta, Cassia ferruginea and Jacaranda trees were particularly admired. A small flock of Canaries was observed calling and flitting between the branches of a Brazilian Kapok (Ceiba speciosa) tree. We meandered through the narrow streets to reach the municipal gardens where tonight’s restaurant – Combatentes – was pointed out. Some of the group then peeled off whilst the remainder explored the municipal garden, where several Monarch butterflies and one Long-tailed Blue were seen. This garden contains a wide selection of mature trees from all over the world, many helpfully labelled, including a bizarre Sausage Tree (Kigelia africana).

The tour report includes an overview of the locations habitats and species that we saw including a list of the most commonly observed garden plants, together with list of the birds and insects found. The plant list includes all the species that we observed, listed alphabetical by family and then by species. (Macaronesian species are marked **. Endemic species are marked*). There is an additional alphabetical list of the principal street and garden plants. Day 1 Tuesday 4th June Our early morning flight from Gatwick arrived in warm Madeira at 11.40am, where we were met by Maria Jose Macedo from Blandy Travel. After a short drive to our hotel, the Residencial Pina, we settled into our rooms and, following a brief lunch, walked into the centre of Funchal to orientate ourselves and look at the variety of street trees from around the world. Summary The tour report includes an overview of the habitats, species and locations that we saw including a list of the most commonly observed garden plants together with list of the birds and insects found. Day 1 Tuesday 5th June We left a rather chilly Gatwick at 7.40am, arriving in a warmer Madeira at 11.40am. After a short drive to our hotel Residencial Pina we settled into our rooms and, following lunch, walked into the centre of Funchal to orientate ourselves and look at the variety of street trees from around the world. The centre of Funchal is readily accessible from Residential Pina. It is an enjoyable place to explore and appreciate the different planted street trees which include in particular: Jacaranda (Jacaranda mimosifolia from Argentina), Pride of Bolivia (Tipuana tipu from Bolivia), Yellow Trumpet Tree (Markhamia platycalyx from Uganda), African Tuliptree (Spathodea campanulata from Gabon), Flame Tree (Brachychiton acerifolius from Australia), Brazilian Kapok (Ceiba speciose from Brazil) Native Frangipani or Wing-seed Tree (Hymenosporum flavum from Australia), Kauri of the East Indies (Agathis macrophylla from Australia), Dwarf Umbrella Tree (Schefflera actinophylla from Australia) and the Peruvian Pepper Tree (Schinus molle from South America).

Ah-Peng & R. Gabriel 2016. Long–term monitoring across elevational gradients (II): vascular plants on Pico Island (Azores) transect. Arquipelago. Life and Marine Sciences 33: 21 – 44. Pico Island remains one of the last remnants of natural vegetation in the Azores, including the largest natural protected area; nevertheless, habitat change and the spread of exotic plants are visible, especially in those areas where human presence prevails. Currently, the lowlands are vastly occupied by pastures dominated by exotic herbs/grasses and most for- ests are dominated by Pittosporum undulatum. This paper aims to: i) review previous bo- tanical studies related to elevational gradients; ii) investigate vascular plants composition and abundance in native vegetation, following an elevational transect (from 10 to 2200 m); and iii) investigate some patterns of the recorded diversity and distribution of vascular plants. Methodology follows a standardized protocol with observations in 100 m2 plots. A total of 88 species were recorded, representing 35% of the indigenous but only 5% of the exotic species previously known from Pico. The richest areas were found between 600 and 1000 m and the areas with the lowest proportion of indigenous species occurred between 1800 and 2200 m.

Schäfer Summary: Based on field data obtained between 1998 and 2001 and all available literature, we present an updated list of the endemic taxa of vascular plants of the Azores archipelago includ- ing distribution, habitat and estimated population size. Of the 197 indigenous species of the Azorean flora, 70 species, i. e. 35.5 %, are classified as endemic. Half of these taxa are wide- spread and common, 25 % are endangered and three may be extinct. Key words: Azores; flora; endemics. Zusammenfassung: Auf der Grundlage von im Zeitraum 1998-2001 gesammelten Verbrei- tungsdaten und unter Berücksichtigung sämtlicher zugänglicher Literatur wurde eine aktuelle Liste der endemischen Farn- und Blütenpflanzen der Azoren mit Angaben zu Verbreitung, Habi- tat und geschätztem Gesamtbestand erarbeitet. Von den 197 indigenen Arten der Azorenflora wurden 70, also 35.5 %, als Azorenendemiten eingestuft. Die Hälfte davon ist weit verbreitet und häufig, ein Viertel gefährdet und drei sind verschollen. 1. Introduction The Azores archipelago is composed of nine volcanic islands, colonised in the early 15th century. It is located in the Northern Atlantic Ocean close to the middle- Atlantic ridge with a distance of more than 1 000 km to the American and the European coast. The native flora of the Azores is very poor in species in comparison to the in- digenous flora of the closest neighbouring archipelagos: Madeira and the Canaries.
