TIM'S WALKER OF THE WEEK

This week's Walker of the Week goes to 17 year old Tayla-Paige Billington who walked a new PB of 48:40 at the World Junior Championships in Eugene last week. It was her first big international race and her 18 th place was a competitive performance. Dogged by health issues earlier in the year, she bounced back in the best possible way, doing a 28 sec PB on the track in Oregon. She has a big future and this should give her the confidence to kick on.

WORLD JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS, EUGENE, OREGON

The 2014 IAAF World Junior Championships ended yesterday after a week of fantastic competition from the world's best U20 athletes. This biennial major event (http://oregon14.com) just gets better and stronger every time it is held. And the walks were no exception with the two 10,000m championship events producing the strongest results ever seen, along with a large number of National records from various countries.

Australian walks team - Nathan Brill, Jesse Osborne, Jasmine Dighton, Tayla-Paige Billington, Megan Szirom (team coach)

U20 Women 10,000m Championship, Wednesday 23 July Javier Clavelo Robinson reported on the Women's 10,000m walk for the IAAF (see http://www.iaaf.org/news/report/report- women-10000m-race-walk-oregon-2014) .

Czech Republic’s Anezka Drahotova produced the first world junior record of the IAAF World Championships, Oregon 2014, by taking the 10,000m walk with a time of 42:47.25 to smash the former mark of 42:59.48, set by Russia’s Yelena Lashmanova in 2011. Sixth in 2012, the 2013 European junior champion set a fast pace from the start and only Russian Oxana Golyatkina was able to join her. She dropped the Russian before the fourth kilometre and maintained a world record pace throughout the race. Golyatkina was disqualified shortly after the fourth kilometres and left her countrywoman Olga Shargina and ’s Na Wang to fight for the minor medals. This duo was joined by China’s Yuanyuan Ni and ’s Laura Garia Caro shortly after the halfway mark. The two Chinese and Shargina dropped the Spaniard with four laps to go and the chase group shrank to Wang and Olga Shargina with 1200m remaining, as Drahotova kept on cranking out laps which made it inevitable that she would take a decent amount of time off the world record as long as her technique remained stable. Shargina made a decisive move with 600 metres to go and crossed the line in second place, only to sadly learn she had been disqualified. She had just embarked on her lap of honour but dissolved into tears. Wang got the silver medal with 44:02.64 and Ni secured bronze with 44:16.72, a personal best for both. Laura Garcia-Caro set a Spanish record of 44:32.84 to finish fourth. An accomplished cyclist and mountain runner, Drahotová became the third Czech athlete to win a world junior title, all women, and the first one in 10 years.

Australian team walks coach Megan Szirom summed up the day's proceedings from an Australian perspective

Conditions were a little wet but really excellent for racing, cool and little wind. Tayla-Paige Billington walked a new PB of 48:40, great first up international race, she will learn a lot from this experience. Jasmine Dighton unfortunately was shown the red panel just before 6km, but has held her head high and is determined moving forward.

U20 Men 10,000m Championship, Friday 25 July Javier Clavelo Robinson again reported for the IAAF (see http://www.iaaf.org/competitions/iaaf-world-junior- championships/iaaf-world-junior-championships-2014-4954/news/report/men/10000-metres-race-walk/final):

Daisuke Matsunaga confirmed his pre-race favourite status in impressive fashion by taking the 10,000m race walk in a championship record of 39:27.19 at Hayward Field. The Japanese race walker made a significant improvement on the previous mark of 39:35.01, set by Russia’s Stanislav Yemelyanov in 2008 and came close to his Asian junior record of 39:18.71.

Second in the junior race at the 2014 IAAF World Race Walking Cup in May, Matsunaga took the lead straight from the gun and already enjoyed a 55m lead by the first kilometre, covered in 3:54.07. He ticked off sub-four-minute kilometres throughout the 25 laps and went on to win by almost 100 metres. The chase group of 13 shrank to nine after the halfway mark and then to five shortly afterwards. Spain’s Diego Garcia made his move with four kilometres remaining, although the 100-metre gap between him and Matsunaga remained the same, and left the battle for the bronze medal to be be fought between Peru’s Paolo Yurivilca, Ecuador’s Brian Pintado and Russia’s Nikolay Markov. Pintado and Yurivilca broke away from Markov shortly after eight kilometres. Pintado accelerated with two laps remaining and crossed the third, only to learn he had been disqualified. Garcia finished second in a Spanish junior record of 39:51.59 while Yurivilca also walked a national junior standard of 40:02.07 to claim Peru’s second medal in the history of the World Junior Championships, the first one since Alfredo Deza’s high jump gold in 1998. Matsunaga became just the the fourth Japanese athlete to win a world junior title, and two of these champions have come in race walking.

It was a disappointing result for the Australians. The Athletics Australia website reported:

Nathan Brill placed 17th in 42.54.39, but the World Walking Cup representative was not satisfied with his effort. "I am pretty disappointed. My legs felt heavy as hell.” Brill had gone out hard with the leaders in the first five laps, and admitted “that was a shock to the system. I think I overstretched it.”, before fading over the second half. "You have to put up with your performance. You get what you get.” said Brill. Teammate Jesse Osborne has been battling leg problems and was gallant in finishing in 33rd place with 49.53.38. “I have been in the pool for 10 weeks and I was going to finish no matter what I had to go through. I’ll be back. I’m hungry to get back home and get right.”

SPANISH T&F CHAMPIONSHIPS, ALCOBENDAS, SPAIN, 26-27 JULY

25 year old Spanish walker Julia Takacs set a new Spanish national record of 42:23.37 in winning the 10,000m walk at the Spanish T&F Championships in Alcobendas last Sunday. Her splits read impressively: 4.16,6, 4.12,77, 4.14,40, 4.12,21, 4.13,29, 4.15,30, 4.14,21, 4:14, 42, 4.16,30 and 4.13,86. Second place went to Raquel Gonzalez with a PB time of 43.31,21 while Beatriz Pascual rounded out the podium with 43.57,13. The men's race was just as impressive with 26 year old Miguel Ángel López taking his fourth Spanish 10,000m title with a superb 38.54,87. Second place went to Luis Alberto Amezcua with 40.37,17 and Álvaro Martín took bronze with 40.41,97. Talk about depth! Spain are now just so strong in both men's and women's walking as evidenced by these results.

I mentioned in last week's newsletter that VRWC club records are always up for grabs. Alan Lucas and Liz Feldman noted this and looked back over their results and have submitted the following as new club records. We have ratified them and list them here for posterity. All VRWC members should check the records list (http://www.vrwc.org.au/vrwc-records.shtml) to see in one of your past performances might in fact be a new inaugural record (if the category is currently blank) or might better the currently listed best time.
