E-mail: [email protected] The main phytogeographic regions within the eastern part of the Indochinese Peninsula are delimited on the basis of analysis of recent literature on geology, geomorphology and climatology of the region, as well as numerous recent literature information on phytogeography, flora and vegetation. The following six phytogeographic regions (at the rank of floristic province) are distinguished and outlined within eastern Indochina: Sikang-Yunnan Province, South Chinese Province, North Indochinese Province, Central Annamese Province, South Annamese Province and South Indochinese Province. Short descriptions of these floristic units are given along with analysis of their floristic relationships. Special floristic analysis and consideration are given to the Orchidaceae as the largest well-studied representative of the Indochinese flora. 1. Background The Socialist Republic of Vietnam, comprising the largest area in the eastern part of the Indochinese Peninsula, is situated along the southeastern margin of the Peninsula. -

Wood Herbs epiphytic, lithophytic, or less often terrestrial, polymorphic, deciduous or evergreen. Stems either: 1) rhizomatous, 2) erect and many noded, 3) erect and 1-noded or several noded from a many-noded rhizome, or 4) without a rhizome, new stems of many nodes arising from base of old ones; 1 or 2(–500) cm, tough or fleshy, 1 to several internodes swollen at or near base or along entire length to form canelike pseudobulbs, ± covered with sheathing leaf bases and cataphylls, often turning yellow when dried. Leaves 1 to many, alternate, apical or distichous along stem, linear, lanceolate, oblong, or ovate, sometimes subterete or terete, papery to rigid and leathery, sometimes with black or brown trichomes especially on sheath, base articulate and often with clasping sheaths, apex usually 2-lobed or emarginate. Inflorescences lateral, generally distal, in some sections pseudoterminal, 1- to many flowered, usually racemose, erect, horizontal, or pendulous; floral bracts usually insignificant. Flowers extremely variable in color and shape, often showy, very small to large, resupinate or not resupinate, usually spreading, ephemeral or long-lived. Sepals similar, free, short to filiform; lateral sepals adnate to elongated column foot and part of lip to form a mentum, 0.1–3 cm. Petals free, margin entire to fimbriate; lip entire to distinctly 3-lobed, base joined to column foot, sometimes narrowly clawed at base, sometimes forming a closed spur with lateral sepals to which it may be joined laterally for a short distance; disk with 1 to several keels, some- times verrucose-papillose, calli rarely present, sometimes with a transverse basal ridge. -

During the survey a total of 52 orchid species belonging to 20 genera were recorded. These comprise of 17 Dendrobium species, 4 Vanda species, 3 of Aerides, 3 species of Bulbophylum, 3 species of Cymbidium, 3 species of Pholidata, 2 species of Acampe, 2 species of Ascocentron, 2 species of Coelogyne and 1 species each in the genera Brachycorythis obcordata, Cleisocentron pallens, Cleisostoma brevipes, Eria flava, Nervilia aragoana, Paphiopedilum hirsutissinum, Phaius wallichii, Phalaenopsis parishii, Pleione praecox, Renanthera imschootiana, Rhynchostylis retusa and Thunia marshalliana. Key words: Orchidaceae, Imphal valley, Manipur. Manipur is one of the states in Orchids are the second largest group Northeastern -India with its capital in Imphal of flowering plants comprising about 788 and geographically it comes under the Southeast genera and 18,500 species6. They are distributed Asia region. The climate of Manipur is largely throughout the world, except the hot desert influenced by the topography of the hilly region and Antarctica. The project involves 13 Community Forestry Groups, comprised of 58 villages, which protect a 56,050 hectare project area within a total of 63,831 hectares of Community Forests in the Northwestern province of Oddar Meanchey. The project will be one of the first to use a mosaic REDD methodology approved under the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) and combined with the Climate Community and Biodiversity (CCB) Standard. The project is expected to sequester 1 approximately 8.3 million metric tons of CO2 over 30 years , demonstrating how developing countries can generate income from carbon markets and positively impact climate change. Why was Oddar Meanchey selected? The Oddar Meanchey Province provides an ideal site for the development of a REDD project. The province’s forests have been under intense pressure from commercial and illegal logging, forest fire, economic land concessions and encroachment. -

Manipur is one of the eight states of North-East India placed inside square area 23°83’–25°68’N and 93°03’–94°78’E. The natural vegetation of the state falls under the Indo-Myanmar Biodiversity Hotspot area with rich flora and fauna. In the present paper, 389 taxa of orchids (including 7 new records to Manipur) belonging to 90 genera, are listed and analysed. Various threats for the depletion of orchid species in the natural habitats of Manipur have been discussed and necessary conservation measures for their conservation are suggested.
