Five illegal operations were shut down by trading standards officers in Scotland last year, two in the capital and two in Falkirk. They also made a seizure in Argyll and Bute. The number of successful counterfeit alcohol raids has increased by 500% in the last the three years. Cigarette smuggling costs the Exchequer £2.2bn a year in lost revenue. There has been some success in clamping down-more than 20 billion smuggled cigarettes and 2,700 tonnes of rolling tobacco have been seized in the past decade, HMRC claims. MANAGEMENT TODAY 01/04/2012 UK Fake cigs, alcohol are seized A HUGE haul of illegal tobacco has been seized and a loan shark ring smashed following raids by trading standards officers. In a raid carried out on three linked premises in Burnley and Bacup, officers discovered more than 1,300 packs of counterfeit cigarettes and tobacco along with bottles of fake Arctic Vodka. Documents relating to a large-scale loan shark operation in the Rosendale area were also found at one of the locations. The counterfeit goods, which have been seized at Castle Donington Market over the last 18 months, will be sent to charities across the UK and abroad. The warning comes ahead of a crackdown on the illicit trade. More than a third of people in Norfolk have been offered illegal tobacco (34%) and one in 10 admits to buying it, according to the research carried out by the East of England Tobacco Control Team (EETC). Access to cut-price tobacco makes it easier for children and young people to smoke and can bring them into contact with criminals. NORWICH EVENING NEWS 06/04/2012 UK Licence surrendered A STORE caught trading in illicit imported booze and counterfeit cigarettes have voluntarily surrendered its alcohol licence. Nearby residents has also complained of antisocial behaviour in the area around European Foods on Borough Road Middlesbrough. Concerns had been raised by police that one store, near the junction with Union Street, had been continuously flouting the law. Cleveland police applied for a review of the premises licence on the grounds of prevention of crime and disorder and public nuisance. TEESSIDE EVENING GAZETTE 06/04/2012 UK Fake alcohol seizures are highest in Britain There were more seizures of counterfeit alcohol in Havering last year than in any other local authority in the country, according to a survey. Trading Standards officers in the borough carried out 22 raids of fake alcohol goods in 2011, in a massive increase from just four in 2010 and three in 2009. Research by Engineering and Technology Magazine revealed the figures last week, as part of comparison of more than 80 local authorities in the UK. Crime experts say plans to insist on plain packaging for cigarettes will make counterfeit packets and sell them in the UK. But the European researches say the clampdown could lead to an explosion in crime. SUNDAY MIRROR 08/04/2012 UK A local Off-License has been caught selling illegal alcohol Londis News on Lodge Road, Southampton, has been banned from selling alcohol for a week after Police seized a record number of counterfeit bottles. 124 bottles of vodka and wine, all counterfeit or non duty paid, were found after a customer complained. The shop owner, Minesh Narenda Patel, avoided a three month drink sales ban after stating that he was ‘conned’. Mr Patel also insisted that he would not allow it to happen again when he appeared before the city Council’s licensing sub-committee. The haul included forged bottles of Jacob’s Creek wine, on which ‘Australia’ was misspelled, and bottles of ‘Arctic Ice Vodka’, which is a fake brand. Bottles of Prince Consort vodka (a genuine brand of vodka) were also found to be faulty, after the manufacturers stated that it was of ‘poor quality’. The shop is popular with students living in it’s vicinity. Sanjay Wadhwani, 45, and Vikas Shah, 34, of Wanis Ltd, were each convicted at Harrow Crown Court last Wednesday for supplying fake Pickapeppa Sauce to Asda and Tesco supermarkets. Genuine Pickapeppa Sauce is made in Shooter Hill, Jamaica. Information related to the sale of the illegal sauce came to the attention of Brent and Harrow Trading Standards Service following a complaint from Asda in Wembley. WEMBLEY & WILLESDON OBSERVER 12/04/2012 UK Counterfeiters £30,000 seized A COUNTERFEITER has had nearly £30,000 seized by the Crown under the Proceeds of Crime Act. A confiscation order was made against Matthew Harkins at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court yesterday for £29,507.43. He was also fined £1000. Harkins, 52, from Bridge of Weir, had previously pled guilty to having in his possession, custody or control, with a view to selling or letting for hire, footwear and clothing which bore a sign identical to or likely to be mistaken for a registered trademark. HERALD, THE (GLASGOW) 14/04/2012 Off licence is fined for counterfeit wine AN off licence was caught selling bottles of counterfeit wine thanks to the dodgy spelling. Hazel Supermarket in Bournemouth was ordered to pay £670 in fines and costs after an investigation by trading standards. The counterfeit bottles of Jacob’s Creek were known to be circulating and had mistakes like `Austrlia` and `Drink Responsibiliy` on the label. The bottles were spotted and seized before Christmas by officers who visited the store in Wimborne Road, Kinson. Barzan Mahmad, 25 who owned Ivegate news in Ivegate, pleaded guilty to a series of charges relating to illegal tobacco products which were found at his shop by Trading Standards. He admitted four charges relating to the possession of counterfeit tobacco products, five relating to products not carrying statutory health warnings and one charge of not displaying a sign stating that tobacco could not be sold to anyone under the age of 18. BRADFORD TELEGRAPH & ARGUS (SERIES) 01/03/2012 UK Illicit cigs paid for holidays to Spain A 74-YEAR-OLD man who funded holidays to Benidorm by selling illicit cigarettes on the black market from his St Helens home has been placed under a curfew. Pensioner Leslie Briers was prosecuted after police visited his home on Bruce Street in June last year where they found a huge stash of illicit cigarette and hand rolling tobacco. The hoard included fake Regal King Size, smuggled Golden Virginia and a variety of “cheap whites”, which are unbranded cigarettes produced in China and Eastern Europe that have no legitimate place on UK market. ST HELENS STAR 01/03/2012 UK Shopkeeper is fined for selling illegal cigarettes A LEIGH shopkeeper has been found guilty of selling illegal cigarettes and tobacco following an investigation by Wigan Council Trading Standards.
