Wednesday 24th April 2019 RHS WISLEY Wisley, in the heart of the Surrey countryside, is the flagship garden of the RHS and one of the greatest gardens in the world. It is now large and diverse, with numerous formal and informal gardens, and greenhouses for tropical, desert and temperate climes. Comprising some 240 acres, with a plant information centre, café and shop, Wisley has much to offer. Wednesday 1st May 2019 2.15pm 46th ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING (to be held in the United Reformed Church, Watling Street, Canterbury) followed by a talk – THE LIFE OF ACTRESS DAME 1847 - 1928 Ellen first saw Smallhythe Place when riding in a pony and trap from Rye to with Henry Irving. Some years later, receiving a message that it was for sale, she purchased the property and lived there very happily for almost 30 years. Susannah Mayor, Property Manager at Smallhythe, will tell us about Ellen Terry’s extraordinary and unconventional life. Her career spanned 65 years and she was especially noted for her female leads in Shakespeare plays. Smallhythe was then used by her daughter to preserve costumes and mementoes of her life. Tuesday 11th June 2019 Knole House is one of England’s largest houses, occupying four acres and set in a large deer estate. The earliest known owner of the core estate was Robert de Knowle in 1290 but nothing is known of his buildings. Today Knole is of prime importance for its construction from the mid 15th until 17th centuries, with its rooms containing interesting collections of art and furniture. We will be introduced to the building with a ‘Past and Present’ talk and see the conservationists at work. Thereafter, in our own time, we can visit the rooms, Orangery, large walled garden and the garden of the current owner, Lord Sackville, also the Gate Tower and with a chance to see the deer in the surrounding estate. Thursday 18th July 2019 NYMANS Nymans is one of the National Trust’s premier gardens. It was a creative retreat for the artistic Messel family, whose house, partially destroyed by fire in 1947, is a backdrop to the grade 2 listed garden. The garden showcases year round colour and interest, with rare and unusual plant collections of national significance. A small gallery shows changing exhibitions throughout the year. Monday 19th August 2019 MUSEUM OF LONDON DOCKLANDS The Docklands Museum is in Poplar, East London in the midst of the skyscrapers of Canary Wharf. It tells the history of the River Thames and the growth of the docks. The permanent galleries show the building of the docks and trade expansion, including the Triangle trade of slaves and sugar. It goes on to describe the growth of London as the busiest port in the world, continuing with London in the Blitz and the modern development of the area. Wednesday 18th September 2019 ANGLESEY ABBEY, GARDENS & LODE MILL We are visiting the former home and estate of Lord Fairhaven in Cambridgeshire. The house, originally built in the 1600s, was renovated by him into an elegant country residence, near to the racing in Newmarket. You can see his collection of paintings and furniture, and not far from the house, the working Lode watermill. The gardens are extensive, with herbaceous borders, statuary and sweeping avenues of mature trees. There is transport to the house for those not wishing to walk. Cost: £27.20 (NT members).
