6. the INTELSAT 17 Satellite
TWO COMMUNICATIONS SATELLITES READY FOR LAUNCH Arianespace will orbit two communications satellite on its fifth launch of the year: INTELSAT 17 for the international satellite operator Intelsat, and HYLAS 1 for the European operator Avanti Communications. The choice of Arianespace by leading space communications operators and manufacturers is clear international recognition of the company’s excellence in launch services. Based on its proven reliability and availability, Arianespace continues to confirm its position as the world’s benchmark launch system. Ariane 5 is the only commercial satellite launcher now on the market capable of simultaneously launching two payloads. Arianespace and Intelsat have built up a long-standing relationship based on mutual trust. Since 1983, Arianespace has launched 48 satellites for Intelsat. Positioned at 66 degrees East, INTELSAT 17 will deliver a wide range of communication services for Europe, the Middle East, Russia and Asia. Built by Space Systems/Loral of the United States, this powerful satellite will weigh 5,540 kg at launch. It will also enable Intelsat to expand its successful Asian video distrubution neighborhood. INTELSAT 17 will replace INTELSAT 702. HYLAS 1 is Avanti Communications’ first satellite. A new European satellite operator, Avanti Communications also chose Arianespace to orbit its HYLAS 2 satellite, scheduled for launch in the first half of 2012. HYLAS 1 was built by an industrial consortium formed by EADS Astrium and the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), using a I-2K platform. Fitted with Ka-band and Ku-band transponders, the satellite will be positioned at 33.5 degrees West, and will be the first European satellite to offer high-speed broadband services across all of Europe. -

A NEW WAY TO LOOK AT THINGS by ∗ George C. Nield ood evening everyone. I am not sure how many of you are aware of it, but today is the anniversary of a very significant event G in the development of mankind’s understanding of the Universe. It was on 24 May 1543, that Nicolaus Copernicus is said to have published his most important work, which was titled "On the Revolutions of the Celestial Spheres." Previously, based on the writings of Aristotle and Ptolemy, it had been assumed that the Earth was located at the very center of the universe. Copernicus rejected that approach. Instead, he showed how a model of the Solar System in which the Earth and other planets traveled in orbits around the Sun was better able to account for the observed motions of the heavenly bodies. Although Copernicus did not attempt to explain what would cause such motions, the publication of his heliocentric theory provided a new way to look at things, and it is often hailed as marking the beginning of the scientific revolution. We have come a long way since then in our knowledge of physics, mathematics, and astronomy. Skynet 5B Joins Satellite Constellation with CSIR's Help
Skynet 5B joins satellite constellation with CSIR's help The critical role of supporting the launch of Skynet 5B, the second satellite of the Skynet 5 programme, was once again handed to the tracking, telemetry and command experts at the CSIR Satellite Applications Centre by French space agency, CNES (Centre National D'Étude Spatiales). The British military communications satellite was launched at 22:06 Greenwich Mean Time from the Ariane Launch Complex No. 3 (ELA 3) in Kourou, French Guiana, on 14 November 2007. It forms part of a next-generation space-based military communications system. The CSIR's Tiaan Strydom confirms that the launch support went well. "As the 5B satellite takes about 20 days to settle into its new geostationary orbit at 53 degrees east of Greenwich, the CSIR continued to provide support for the following week," he notes. The CSIR supported the Skynet 5A launch in March 2007. Skynet 5 is unusual among military satellite communications ('chat sats') projects as it is privately owned. The operational life of Skynet 5B is expected to exceed 15 years, like that of the other Skynet 5 satellites. French company Arianespace said the launch had set a new record for Ariane V, with 8 700 kg of payload delivered. Both the Skynet spacecraft and a Brazilian telecommunications platform were sent on their journey to geostationary orbit. Arianespace was the world's first commercial space transportation company and undertakes the production, operation and marketing of the Ariane V rocket launcher as part of the Ariane programme.
