She explains how close examination of the Church’s teachings on family life and artificial contraception led her to embrace the fullness of the Faith, and why she came to believe that the Roman Catholic Church is the Church founded by Christ. “Excellent for Pre-Cana! It was good to hear the truth about God’s design for the family and how it enriches a couple’s life together.” Louise - Essex Junction., VT “She showed me how to approach women of the Protestant faith.” Helaine - Tinker, OK A Walk Through the New Mass Translation – Dr. Edward Sri Dr. Edward Sri, Professor of Scripture and Theology at the Augustine Institute, provides a fascinating explanation of the new English translation of the Mass which will soon be put into practice. This is truly a great opportunity for Catholics to enter more deeply into the biblical and theological richness found in the liturgy, and to better worship God with our whole heart. “Dr. Sri’s presentation shines a comforting light of truth on the looming darkness of doubt and anxiety lurking in the minds of some Catholics over the changes in the Mass… every Catholic should listen to this CD.” Dan - Milledgeville, GA “I appreciate very much this easy to understand explanation of the new translation of the Mass. I am sure that many will be ignited to come to love the Holy Mass!” Amaryllis - Olathe, KS “I’m so happy to hear a line by line explanation of the merits of the translation! Our faith can be more devoted, and this change can significantly help.” Benjamin - Batavia, IL “I now have a deeper knowledge of the Mass and the true meaning of all that is said. After listening to this CD I’m certain that the new translation is a great blessing to the Church!” Jean - Black Mountain, NC Abba or Allah - Dr. Scott Hahn In this informative talk, Dr. Scott Hahn explores some of the most important beliefs that distinguish Christianity from Islam. He explains that while both religions trace themselves back to Abraham, the differences, including our understanding of God as Father, are not insignificant. With charity, balance, and candor, Dr. Hahn shows us how Islam presents the most formidable challenge to Christianity in the third millennium. “Awesome! Timely observations about modernday Christians and Muslims. Dr. Hahn once again presents material with such clarity that I must ponder it long after the recording has stopped.” Judy - Williamsburg, VA “Very educational! It shed a lot of light on Islam!” Don - Charlton, MA “Anything by Scott Hahn is tops!” Kathleen - Detroit, MI “Dr. Hahn is extremely insightful when it comes to understanding Islam. His personal experiences really add to the presentation.” Timothy - Norwood, OH 2 “Dr. Hahn tackles a difficult topic in a way that filled me with a greater appreciation of what it means to call God my Father. His excellent use of scripture shows how God’s hand has worked throughout time—from Abraham to Christ, and even now in our day.” Stacy - Poplar Grove, IL “I have been so hungry to learn about what distinguishes Christians from Muslims. I am delighted with what Dr. Hahn has taught me, and am also profoundly challenged!” Mike - New Zealand Aborting America - The Story of an Ex-Abortionist and Ex-Atheist - Dr. Bernard Nathanson This incredible talk is a candid account of the conversion of the late Dr. Bernard Nathanson, one of the foremost pioneers of the modern abortion industry. He explains how, through the use of technology, he came to recognize the undeniable humanity of the unborn child and became an outspoken pro-life leader. This story of his journey to the Catholic Faith is both dramatic and inspiring. This presentation also includes an excerpt from There is Life in the Womb by Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen. “As the director of a Hispanic Pro-Life outreach, I was enriched in my appreciation for God’s mercy and forgiveness, and was invigorated in my call to be a voice for the unborn.” Mari - Visalia, CA “A riveting story of a modern day conversion... Prepare to have your heart deeply touched. Get out the tissues!” Julie - Sterling, VA “A powerful witness! Dr. Nathanson’s talk filled me with hope and encouragement. I had an abortion at 16 and I regretted it. For twenty years I suffered in silence but like Dr. Nathanson, I can no longer be silent on this important issue.” Dale - Cornwall, ON “I’ve always wanted to know more about Dr. Nathanson, and the reasons he changed his ideas on abortion. Thanks so much for this informative and encouraging story.” Lorraine - Vancouver, BC “My husband and I were engrossed and elated at the amazing story about how God worked in Dr. Nathanson’s life to bring him full circle into the light.” Kimberly - Yorba Linda, CA “Powerful, moving, transforming CD... The truth will set you free!” Kurt - Birmingham, AL “Thank you for giving us this very personal testimony—priceless!” Ana - Miami, FL “Two of the original defenders of life on one awesome CD! I will bring it along the next time I’m praying in front of Planned Parenthood.” Jeff - Steubenville, OH “An astonishing insight into the black heart of the abortion industry, contrasted with the infinite hope and mercy of Jesus Christ.

Jordana Lauren Metz And They Lived Happily Ever After: The Effects of Cultural Myths and Romantic Idealizations on Committed Relationships ABSTRACT This study explored the impact of idealized relationships, present in our media and culture, on committed relationships. The purpose of this study was to explore the ways that relationships are impacted by real and idealized relationship discrepancies. In addition, this research provided an initial assessment of the coping mechanisms utilized by partners as problem solving responses to the discrepancies. Twelve participants, self-identified as in a committed relationship with a partner and living together for over one year, participated in this study. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with questions focusing on how the participants’ relationships fit and do not fit into idealized notions of relationships, how their partnership is affected by this relationship discrepancy and the ways that they cope and respond to these effects. Findings indicated that many participants experienced feelings of discomfort, questioning and doubt in their relationship due to the prevalence of idealized relationships.

  • Solomon and Sinatra: the Song of Songs and Romance in the Church Robert Case a Sunday School Class Faith Presbyterian Church Tacoma, Washington 2016
1 Solomon and Sinatra: The Song of Songs and Romance in the Church Robert Case A Sunday School Class Faith Presbyterian Church Tacoma, Washington 2016 Part 3 There are a multitude of biblical themes expressed by non-believing Jewish songwriters in the American Songbook, but one fine example for our purposes in this class is the theme of: no Sex before marriage “Love and Marriage” In 1955 Jimmy Van Heusen (a Methodist) with Jewish lyricist Sammy Cahn wrote “Love and Marriage” which was introduced (ironically) by Frank Sinatra in the television production of Thornton Wilder's Our Town. It is the biggest hit to ever come out of a television special. In 1956, the song, "Love and Marriage" won the Emmy Award for Best Musical Contribution from the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. The Cahn inspired clever lyrics euphemistically call “sex” “love” and claim that mom told dad you can’t have sex (“love”) without marriage. The song was used as the theme song for the long-running (1987–97) FOX television sitcom Married... with Children. Additionally, the song has been used in several national commercial campaigns. “Love and marriage, love and marriage, go together like a horse and carriage. This I tell you brother you can't have one without the other. Love and marriage, love and marriage, it's an institute you can't disparage. Ask the local gentry and they will say it's elementary. Try, try, try to separate them it's an illusion Try, try, try, and you will only come to this conclusion.

Contrasting Attitudes Toward Marriage in Pride and Prejudice: Elizabeth Bennet's Disregard for the Contemporary Marital Conventions Elin Blom Bachelor Programme of English: Language, Literature and Society Independent essay project in English Literature, 15 credits Autumn term 2015 Author Elin Blom Swedish title Kontrasterande äktenskapliga attityder i Stolthet och Fördom: Elizabeth Bennets likgiltighet gentemot de konventionella äktenskapliga normerna. English title Contrasting Attitudes Toward Marriage in Pride and Prejudice: Elizabeth Bennet's Disregard for the Contemporary Marital Conventions. Supervisor Jane Mattisson Abstract Through a liberal feminist perspective, this essay investigates the unconventional marital views of the fictional character Elizabeth Bennet. These are analyzed and compared to the traditional marital opinions of the novel's social environment. Moreover, the historical context is important in understanding the marital views in Pride and Prejudice, because the novel was written at a time when the views toward marriage changed significantly. This paper argues that Elizabeth's behavior, expressed opinions and rejections of Mr. Collins's and Mr. Darcy's proposals depict liberal feminist ideas of marriage. The literary review supports the notion that there are two contrasting attitudes toward marriage in Pride and Prejudice: the traditional view and the liberal feminist view. The thorough examination of Elizabeth Bennet's character strongly suggests that she represents the unconventional view of marriage, while

In this episode of Ideas that Change the World, we go back to a lecture Rabbi Friedman gave at Chabad of Clearwater, Florida about love and marriage. Rabbi Friedman: Good evening. So you remember the song, love and marriage? Audience: Go together like a horse and a carriage Rabbi Friedman: You remember. It’s a horrible song with a horrible message. Maybe it worked in the 40's or 50's but it is so misleading. Love and marriage go together like a horse and carriage. Well first of all, what an insulting comparison. Who's the horse? And also the rest of the song goes, you can’t have one without the… Audience: Other. Rabbi Friedman: You can’t have a horse without a carriage? And you can’t have a carriage without a horse? You can’t have love without marriage? That means you have to marry everyone you love. Woman 1: Oh my God. Rabbi Friedman: Oh my God is right. Or does it mean you mustn't love anyone you're not married to, which is also bad.

  • Bachelor Nation(S): the Construction of Romantic Love and Audience Investment in the Bachelor/Ette in Australia and the United States
. Volume 15, Issue 2 November 2018 Bachelor Nation(s): The construction of romantic love and audience investment in The Bachelor/ette in Australia and the United States Jodi McAlister, Deakin University, Australia Abstract: The Bachelor/ette is a franchise with iterations in multiple major Anglophone countries. It began in the USA in 2002, but in the last five years, new versions of the franchise have emerged, including in Australia (2013-). While The Bachelor/ette is an instantly recognisable global franchise, local cultural priorities inflect both the show and the ways in which audiences react to it. This article examines this phenomenon in two territories: Australia and the United States. It will outline the diegetic differences between the two franchises, and use two key case studies to elucidate, explore, and explain some of these divergences. These two case studies – the failed romances of Bachelorette Georgia Love and runner-up Matty Johnson in The Bachelorette Australia in 2016, and Bachelorette Rachel Lindsey and runner-up Peter Kraus in the US version of The Bachelorette in 2017 – represent two instances in which audiences became deeply invested in particular love stories. Thus, I closely read both case studies with references to major recaps. By doing so, I seek to shed light on the divergent romantic cultures of the United States and Australia, and show that while there are numerous overlaps and commonalities in these cultures, there are also distinct national preferences and desires around romantic love. Keywords: romantic love; The Bachelor; The Bachelorette; reality television; recaps Introduction In 2016, after Bachelorette Georgia Love rejected Matty Johnson in favour of Lee Elliott in the finale of the second season of The Bachelorette Australia, the reaction of the audience was one of disbelief and heartbreak.

WHEN LOVE CRIES: POPULAR 1980s LOVE SONGS EXAMINED THROUGH INTIMATE PARTNER VIOLENCE A Thesis Presented to The Graduate Faculty of The University of Akron In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts Megan Ward May, 2014 WHEN LOVE CRIES: POPULAR 1980s LOVE SONGS EXAMINED THROUGH INTIMATE PARTNER VIOLENCE Megan Ward Thesis Approved: Accepted: ______________________________ ______________________________ Advisor Dean of College Dr. Therese Lueck Dr. Chand Midha ______________________________ ______________________________ Committee Member Dean of Graduate School Dr. Kathleen Endres Dr. George R. Newkome ______________________________ _______________________________ Committee Member Date Dr. Tang Tang ______________________________ School Director Dr. Elizabeth Graham ii ABSTRACT Romantic love and intimate partner relationships are themes that dominate popular music. As cultivation theory suggests, music cultivates attitudes and beliefs regarding romantic love and relationships modeled by the narratives evident in music. Women are particularly drawn to popular music and, thus, romantic love narratives. However, what happens when a real-life romantic love narrative is afflicted by abuse? What do such narratives cultivate in regards to the acceptance of intimate partner violence (IPV)? Research on battering and battered women raised awareness about battering. Lenore Walker’s The Battered Woman published in 1979, perhaps the most comprehensive research to date regarding IPV, revealed the common dynamics of an abusive relationship and introduced the Cycle of Violence (COV), a repetitive cycle consisting of three phases. As such, a narrative analysis of top 1980’s love songs was conducted to first, identify common narratives of romantic love between intimate partners present in the lyrics and then examine these narratives through narratives of abuse, including the COV.
