    Autobiographical Notes by Walter Noll, 1988 Section A. 1925-1946. I was born on Jan. 7, 1925 in Berlin-Biesdorf, a district in the North-East of Berlin. My parents, Franz Noll and Martha Noll, née Janßen, had lived in Berlin since about 1915. My father grew up in Thüringen in central Germany; his parents had immigrated from Rotterdam, Holland, to Germany in about 1890. My Mother grew up in a rural area near Varel in Northwest Germany. Both of my parents had only an 8-year grade-school education. My mother was employed as a maid until she got married. My father went to a trade school for two years and then became a tool-and-die maker. Most of his life he worked for "Jaroslaw's Erste Glimmerwarenfabrik" , later renamed "Scherb und Schwer G.m.b.H.", in Berlin. He eventually became foreman and division manager. He originated 5 patents. My father was active in the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) from the time he was a young man. During the First World War, in 1917, he gave a speech at a rally of striking munitions workers. As a result, he had to spend the last nine months of the war in prison. Later, he became a very strong opponent of the Nazis. When the Nazis attained power in 1933, he predicted that there would be a second world war, that the U.S. would again fight against Germany, and that Germany would again be defeated. Even as a child, I never doubted that he was right.

    IU BICENTENNIAL SPECIAL How a Scandal Helped Change IU Forever PLUS IU's Most Influential Presidents & Honoring the Contributions Minorities & Women Have Made to the University By Carmen Siering Founded on January 20, 1820, as the State Seminary, Indiana University has grown from a one-building institution of learning—where a dozen young men were taught the classics by a single professor, Baynard Rush Hall—to a world-class research institution with more than 94,000 students and more than 21,000 faculty and staff on campuses in Bloomington and across the state. The bicentennial was being discussed as early as 2007—the year Michael A. McRobbie became president. But planning for this one-time-only celebration of the university’s first 200 years kicked into high gear in 2015. That’s the year James Capshew was hired as the official university historian, and the Office of the Bicentennial, directed by Kelly Kish, began focusing on a myriad of Bloomington-based and statewide projects to coincide with the anniversary.     The Campus as a Pedagogical Agent Herman B Wells, Cultural Entrepreneurship, and the Benton Murals JAMES H. CAPSHEW he visionary educator Herman B Wells indelibly transformed TIndiana University in his service as President (1937-62) and University Chancellor (1962-2000). Under his leadership, the universi- ty grew from a provincial hub into a cosmopolitan center of learning with an international reputation. Shrewd, charming, and energetic, Wells possessed an immense social network and ample sound judgment to find and create opportunities to improve the fortunes of IU. People were his passion, and he cultivated contacts with all members of the university community as well as with many groups beyond the campus. Although he strengthened the university’s focus on research and advanced training, he made an extraordinary effort to cultivate the arts as well. Wells’s unwavering commitment to academic freedom was put to the test by his protection of Alfred Kinsey’s controversial research on sex, and he set into motion the expansion of international academic pro- grams of many kinds. __________________________ James H. Writing in 1974, he stated: ... within the memory of alumni and former students, Indiana University has grown to be one of the great educational, cultural, and scientific centers of the world. A unique facet of its many-sided character is its campus with much of its original association of plant and animal life. There are few places in the world where great laboratories, classrooms, libraries, auditoriums, and other such centers of intellectual and artistic creativity are located in an environment which retains its primeval character – few places where one may so quickly and so completely cast off the tensions and anxieties of this complex modern world in quiet meditation. The tradition of a green campus and natural areas continues with the support of the IU Administration. We are fortunate to have easy access to the luxuriant forests of southern Indiana that have been specifically dedicated for teaching and research. This brochure is a successor to Weatherwax’s The Woodland Campus, a publication which highlighted the natural aesthetics of the forests on Indiana University’s Bloomington campus. Two African Americans, William Cooley and Aaron Wallace, purchased lots in the November, 1818 land sale. Literally, it was the second such sale of parcels in the city’s short history. No more information is available about these families, but census data from the 1860’s through the 1880’s document that the city attracted many African Americans pri- marily from Virginia, North and South Carolina, Ohio, Tennessee, and Kentucky in the first waves of migration to the north. Although the Indiana State Constitution of 1816 outlawed involuntary servitude and African American citizens were free to live and work anywhere in the state, there were still those born into slavery in the south who fled to the north and were returned for bounty.
