I wonder, however, if we reflect frequently enough on the challenging times that Villa Duchesne and Oak Hill School has endured — beginning with the Great Depression so soon after the School’s founding in 1929. It is clear that our School’s mission of celebrating Catholicism in an independent school is indeed counter-cultural today. Thus, as I reflect on my first year serving as your Head of School and anticipate the excitement of the 2014-2015 academic year, I begin by thanking you for your prayers for our School, those who build community through it and in it, and Villa Duchesne and Oak Hill School’s continued success. As your Head of School, those prayers led to the beginning of significant relationships with students, with their parents, with their teachers, with the alumnae that preceded them, and with the loyal friends of the School, especially our trustees. Our beautiful, historic 60-acre campus with the stately 1929 Main Building that craftsmen could not begin to duplicate today is enjoying careful care and attention to its needs—from classrooms freshly painted and carpeted last summer to a refurbished Log Cabin, from needed HVAC repairs to a new sound system in perhaps the most beautiful sacred space, our Chapel. ABOVE: However, the beauty of the buildings cannot compare with the people that help us to live the Sacred Heart Elizabeth Miller, Goals and Criteria. With our school-wide theme of “Life is a sacred journey,” together, we commemorated the Head of School centenary of Janet Erskine Stuart’s death. Mother Stuart’s words resonated as Oak Hill children prepared for and received the sacraments of first Reconciliation and first Holy Communion. The Class of 2014’s dazzling array of college acceptances, matriculations, and scholarship opportunities testifies to the School’s commitment to a superior academic experience. It was a privilege to witness the academic work of these young women led by our talented and highly relational faculty. This summer we enjoy our first cohort of college-age alumnae to participate in on-campus internships, from market research to service planning. We continue to call for the selfless service to others, as modeled by our RSCJ. Sr. Collins, incoming Villa Duchesne Principal will join Sr. Ghio, Sr. Herbst, Sr. Rives, and Sr. Stephens on our campus. More than a hundred new students, ranging from junior kindergarten to tenth graders, will become Children of the Sacred Heart. New Sacred Heart educators join us, exceptionally capable, highly energetic, and superbly qualified teachers. At Oak Hill, the faculty will be led by incoming principal and veteran Sacred Heart educator Katie Komos. Oak Hill School education “a life well lived.” Because of our shared values, we are able to foster a culture where one can make choices in an “atmosphere of wise freedom.” We will see that prominently attended to in the coming school year with the continued Parent Network offerings — on and off campus, as well as the introduction of Prime for Life programming for parents of 6th-12th grades and FCD (Freedom from Chemical Dependency) 2 bravo programming for students 6th-12th grades.
