Such favorites as Sembrich, Nordica, Ternina, Melba, Eames, Calve, Plancon, and Caruso are represented in a variety of roles. One hundred and twenty-seven illustrations in all are given, twenty-nine of which are full-page portraits, forming the most interesting and complete collection of its kind ever published. The biographies are absolutely authentic, the facts being taken down from the lips of the singers themselves. The latter part of the volume, entitled " Opera Singers off Duty," shows the lighter pastimes indulged in when not occupied with the arduous duty of public performance. The book is printed on finely finished, heavy paper from large, clear type, is substantially bound in strong board covers, and bears a lifelike picture of Nordica as Briinnhilde on its title cover. ''Manfred,'' Symphony after Byron's "Manfred," Op. 58. Peter Tschaikowsky (Born at Votkinsk, in the government of Viatka, Russia, May 7, 1840; died at St. Petersburg, November 5-6, 1893.) ' The full title of this composition is ' Manfred, Symphony in Four Tableaux, after the Dramatic Poem by Byron." Mily Balakireff wrote a letter, dated St. Petersburg, October 28, 1882, to Tschaikowsky, in which he urged him to compose a symphonic poem based on Byron's ' 'Manfred." He said that he had recommended the subject to Berlioz, who was unwilling on account of his age and physical infirmities. Balakireff would not compose the music, for the subject was not "in harmony with his inner disposition," but he thought the subject an admirable one for Tschaikowsky. And Bala- kireff sketched the programme at some length: there should be a fixed idea, the Manfred motive, which should appear in all the move- ments. His programme for the first movement is practically that which is printed in the score, and he took the pains to name the tonal- ities of the respective themes. His idea was that the second move- ment should portray the simple life of the Alpine hunter. ' 'You must, of course, use a hunter's motive, but you should take the greatest care to avoid the trivial. God keep you from commonplaces after the manner of German fanfares and hunters' music." The third movement should portray the Fairy of the Alps. He found the task a hard one, and he was. tempted at times to' put it aside. He wrote to Mrs., von Meek, August 3. 1885-; "The work is so difficult and. complicated that I myself am for the time being a Manfred." He ' spoke of his wish to be through with it, of his exhaustion : 'This is the eternal vicious circle in which I go round without finding an exit. If I have no work, I am bored and dismal; if I have work—I work be- yond my strength." He completed "Manfred" in September, 1885. Tschaikowsky wrote that month to Mrs. \-on Meek: "My "Manfred' will be plaved once or twice, and then it will disappear; outside of a handful who go to symphony concerts, no one will happen to hear it. It is only the opera that brings us nearer to the people"; and he was already feverish over an opera at which he was then working. The first performance of "Manfred" was at Moscow, March 11, 1886, under Erdmannsdorfferst direction.     PROGRAMME Happy birthday Somerset Chamber Choir! Welcome to our 30th birthday party! We are delighted that our very special invited guests, our loyal choir ‘Friends’ and everyone here tonight could join us for this occasion. As if that weren’t enough of a nucleus for a wonderful party, the BERLINER KANTOREI have travelled from Berlin to celebrate with us too ... their ‘return match’ for an excellent time some of us enjoyed singing with them when they hosted us last autumn. This concert comes at the end of a week which their party of singers and supporters have spent staying in and sampling the delights of Somerset; we hope their experience has been a memorable one and we wish them bon voyage for their journey home. Ten years of singing together in the 1970s and 1980s under the inspirational direction of the late W. Robert Tullett, founder conductor of the Somerset Youth Choir, welded a disparate group of young people drawn from schools across Somerset, into a close-knit group of friends who had discovered the huge pleasure of making music together and who developed a passion for choral music that they wanted to share. The Somerset Chamber Choir was founded in 1984 when several members who had become too old to be classed as “youths” left the Youth Choir and, with the approval of Somerset County Council, drew together other like-minded singers from around the County. Blessed with a variety of complementary skills, a small steering group set about developing a balanced choir and appointed a conductor, accompanist and management team.

    Tchaikovsky CD 1 1 Orchestrion It wasn’t unusual, in the middle of the 19th century, to hear sounds like that coming from the drawing rooms of comfortable, middle-class families. The Orchestrion, one of the first and grandest of mass-produced mechanical music-makers, was one of the precursors of the 20th century gramophone. It brought music into homes where otherwise it might never have been heard, except through the stumbling fingers of children, enduring, or in some cases actually enjoying, their obligatory half-hour of practice time. In most families the Orchestrion was a source of pleasure. But in one Russian household, it seems to have been rather more. It afforded a small boy named Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky some of his earliest glimpses into a world, and a language, which was to become (in more senses then one), his lifeline. One evening his French governess, Fanny Dürbach, went into the nursery and found the tiny child sitting up in bed, crying. ‘What’s the matter?’ she asked – and his answer surprised her. ‘This music’ he wailed, ‘this music!’ She listened. The house was quiet. ‘No. It’s here,’ cried the boy – he pointed to his head. ‘It’s here, and I can’t make it go away. It won’t leave me.’ And of course it never did. ‘His sensitivity knew no bounds and so one had to deal with him very carefully. Every little trifle could upset or wound him. He was a child of glass. As for reproofs and admonitions (with him there could be no question of punishments), what would have been water off a duck’s back to other children affected him deeply, and if the degree of severity was increased only the slightest, it would upset him alarmingly.’ Despite his outwardly happy appearance, peace of mind is something Tchaikovsky rarely knew, from childhood to his dying day.

    THE ELGAR SKETCH-BOOKS PAMELA WILLETTS A MAJOR gift from Mrs H. S. Wohlfeld of sketch-books and other manuscripts of Sir Edward Elgar was received by the British Library in 1984. The sketch-books consist of five early books dating from 1878 to 1882, a small book from the late 1880s, a series of eight volumes made to Elgar's instructions in 1901, and two later books commenced in Italy in 1909.^ The collection is now numbered Add. MSS. 63146-63166 (see Appendix). The five early sketch-books are oblong books in brown paper covers. They were apparently home-made from double sheets of music-paper, probably obtained from the stock of the Elgar shop at 10 High Street, Worcester. The paper was sewn together by whatever means was at hand; volume III is held together by a gut violin string. The covers were made by the expedient of sticking brown paper of varying shades and textures to the first and last leaves of music-paper and over the spine. Book V is of slightly smaller oblong format and the sides of the music sheets in this volume have been inexpertly trimmed. The volumes bear Elgar's numbering T to 'V on the covers, his signature, and a date, perhaps that ofthe first entry in the volumes. The respective dates are: 21 May 1878(1), 13 August 1878 (II), I October 1878 (III), 7 April 1879 (IV), and i September 1881 (V). Elgar was not quite twenty-one when the first of these books was dated. Earlier music manuscripts from his hand have survived but the particular interest of these early sketch- books is in their intimate connection with the round of Elgar's musical activities, amateur and professional, at a formative stage in his career.

    Interview with conductor Semyon Bychkov Tutti-magazine: You conducted the Vienna Philharmonic in their annual ball at the Musikverein, the day before yesterday. What did you take away from the experience ? Semyon Bychkov: It was an extraordinary experience, it is hard to find words to describe it. The women and the debutantes were dressed in sumptuous ball gowns and the atmosphere made it feel as if one were in the 19th century. For someone like me who sometimes wishes they’d lived in the 18th or 19th centuries, the evening reminded me of a style approrpriate to a particularly beautiful past. As I’ve said many times to your colleagues, I would be very happy if this beautiful and joyful spirit could be shared by as many people as possible and offer an alternative to the vulgarity and violence which occur daily in the world today. As I was leaving on tour with the Vienna Philharmonic, I arrived to drop my things off at the Great Hall of the Musikverein in the afternoon – the following day we would be playing in Hamburg at the Elbphilharmonie - the Hall was deserted and the view was so extraordinary that I couldn’t resist taking some photographs : all the stalls seats had been removed and replaced by flowers and tables. Of course I also noticed the wall covered with photographs of conductors who had worked with the orchestra, and thought: «So here is the conductors’ wall of fame»… That evening, immediately after our concert, everything that had been installed was moved to the large empty space under the floor of the Hall.

    rg Pyotr Ilyich TCHAIKOVSKY Manfred Symphony Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (7 May 1840 – 6 November 1893) was a Russian composer. He had begun piano lessons at the age of 5, and beFore turning 8, his sight-reading eclipsed that oF his teacher. Despite his musical precociousness, Tchaikovsky's parents did not believe that a career as a musician was Feasible in Russia, and sent the 10-year-old Tchaikovsky to boarding school to be educated for a career in the government. This early separation From his mother — who would die From cholera when Tchaikovsky was 14 — would create a liFelong trauma. Despite this turmoil, Tchaikovsky graduated at 19 and became a senior assistant at the Ministry of Justice in St. Petersburg the same year. Concurrently, Anton Rubinstein had founded the Russian Musical Society (Russia's First music school open to the public) in St. Petersburg, and Tchaikovsky attended classes at the school (which became the St. Petersburg Conservatory in 1862). As a prized student, Tchaikovsky was oFFered a job as a professor by Anton Rubinstein's brother, Nikolai, at what would soon become the Moscow Conservatory. In the following years, as his career grew, the public became increasingly interested in Tchaikovsky's private life.     RUSSIAN & UKRAINIAN Russian & Ukrainian Symphonies and Orchestral Works Occupying a vast land mass that has long been a melting pot of home-spun traditions and external influences, Russia’s history is deeply encrypted in the orchestral music to be found in this catalogue. Journeying from the Russian Empire through the Soviet era to the contemporary scene, the music of the Russian masters covers a huge canvas of richly coloured and immediately accessible works. Influences of folklore, orthodox liturgy, political brutality and human passion are all to be found in the listings. These range from 19th-century masterpieces penned by ‘The Mighty Five’ (Balakirev, Rimsky-Korsakov, Mussorgsky, Borodin, and Cui) to the edgy works of Prokofiev and Shostakovich that rubbed against the watchful eye of the Soviet authorities, culminating in the symphonic output of one of today’s most noted Russian composers, Alla Pavlova. Tchaikovsky wrote his orchestral works in a largely cosmopolitan style, leaving it to the band of brothers in The Mighty Five to fully shake off the Germanic influence that had long dominated their homeland’s musical scene. As part of this process, they imparted a thoroughly ethnic identity to their compositions. The titles of the works alone are enough to get the imaginative juices running, witness Borodin’s In the Steppes of Central Asia, Rimsky-Korsakov’s The Legend of the Invisible City of Kitezh, and Mussorgsky’s St John’s Night on the Bare Mountain. Supplementing the purely symphonic works, instrumental music from operas and ballets is also to be found in, for example, Prokofiev’sThe Love for Three Oranges Suite, Shostakovich’s four Ballet Suites, and Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite.
