Trans.Inst.Indian Geographers ISSN 0970-9851 Excavation Features on Rock Coasts: A Study of Honeycombs, Taffoni and Caves from North Konkan Ajay Kamble and S.R. Jog, Pune - Maharashtra Abstract Excavation of Geo-materials on a rocky coast, causes formation of geomorphic features like Honeycombs, Taffoni and Caves. These features mainly account for the consumption of cliff and platform surfaces. These differ not only in their size, but also as per their processes of formation. The North Konkan region has several patches of rocky coasts where these landforms are observed at many locations. These locations were surveyed to obtain morphometric variables such as size, length, width, depth, height etc. Apart from visual interpretation, the rocks and material characteristics were analyzed using microscopic observation of thin sections. Field survey, morphometric analysis and material analysis show that honeycombs are primarily a result of erosion by salt spray on a relatively resistant, fresh rock surface. Taffonis, which are similar features, are formed by excavation of severely weathered material. Notches and caves are larger in size, and are associated with differential weathering and erosion of different Basalt flows. Keywords : Rocky Coasts, Honeycombs, Taffoni, Notches, Basalt, Konkan Introduction rock-mass, and hence, can be grouped On rocky coasts, the disintegration together. Email: Abstract: Distribution of butterfly species along the latitudinal and habitat gradients of the Western Ghats was studied. The Western Ghats was divided into 14 latitude zones and the species diversity in each latitude zone, along with habitats of their occurrence, were studied using the data from literature survey for the entire Western Ghats as well as data from personal observations in the areas between 14°N to 20°N latitudes. Out of 334 species recorded from the Western Ghats, 58 species were found in all latitudinal zones, while 5 species were reported in only one latitudinal zone. Further, southern Western Ghats consisted of more number of species and more number of genera as compared to northern Western Ghats. Latitudinal zones between 10°N to 12°N had most of the Western Ghats endemic species. Habitat wise distribution of species revealed three significant clusters grossly separated by the level of human disturbance. Evergreen forest habitats supported maximum number of species endemic to the Western Ghats.

Lokhande De pt of Geography, (UG & PG) K.B.P.College, Tal-Pandharpur, Dist-Solapur, (MS) [email protected] Abstract: Tourism is one of the largest global industries with much of the growing market focuse d around pristine natural as well as cultural environments. It includes coastal and marine areas, forts, forests, wildlife sanctuaries, temples, ecotourism is also a major source of income and employment which is made it one of major industries in the world. This Industry has grown quickly and change at an incredibly fast rate. In contrast, sustainable tourism is consciously planned to benefit local residents, respect local culture, conserve natural resources, direct more of the profits to the local community and Government, and educate both tourists and local residents about the importance of conservation. However, tourism can also threaten the resources by destroying habitat, disturbing wildlife, affecting wate r quality, and threaten communities by over-development, crowding, and disruption of local culture. In addition, conventional tourism often does not benefit the local community when tourist revenue “leaks” to outside operators (World Tourism Organization). Raigad is a District in along Western Coastline of Arabian Sea. But the not more tourism development in the district so need for sustainable tourism development (STD) in Raigad district for growth of socio-economic benefits.

In India there are about 1200 species of birds, representing some 75 families and 20 orders. This is a very high number and represents a great variety for a single country. The reason for this is that India has a great diversity of climates, from moist tropical to the cold arctic of the Himalayan ranges, the dry and hot desert climate of Rajasthan and cool temperate climate of the hilly portions. Survey and sampling method was used. The study was conducted during three seasons. For the study Six different areas with dense vegetation were identified from Shreewardhan taluka namely Dighi, Kudki, Chikhlap, Aravi, Shreewardhan, Harihareshwar. About 64 species of Birds were observed and identified by using various sources at selected sites. These species are included under 34 families. Comparing the availability of bird species at Western Maharashtra (540), Shreewardhan (64) has about 12% of bird diversity observed during the study. The details of finding are discussed in the paper. Keywords: Shriwardhan, Avian diversity.
