    THE LIST of CHURCH OF IRELAND PARISH REGISTERS A Colour-coded Resource Accounting For What Survives; Where It Is; & With Additional Information of Copies, Transcripts and Online Indexes SEPTEMBER 2021 The List of Parish Registers The List of Church of Ireland Parish Registers was originally compiled in-house for the Public Record Office of Ireland (PROI), now the National Archives of Ireland (NAI), by Miss Margaret Griffith (1911-2001) Deputy Keeper of the PROI during the 1950s. Griffith’s original list (which was titled the Table of Parochial Records and Copies) was based on inventories returned by the parochial officers about the year 1875/6, and thereafter corrected in the light of subsequent events - most particularly the tragic destruction of the PROI in 1922 when over 500 collections were destroyed. A table showing the position before 1922 had been published in July 1891 as an appendix to the 23rd Report of the Deputy Keeper of the Public Records Office of Ireland. In the light of the 1922 fire, the list changed dramatically – the large numbers of collections underlined indicated that they had been destroyed by fire in 1922. The List has been updated regularly since 1984, when PROI agreed that the RCB Library should be the place of deposit for Church of Ireland registers. Under the tenure of Dr Raymond Refaussé, the Church’s first professional archivist, the work of gathering in registers and other local records from local custody was carried out in earnest and today the RCB Library’s parish collections number 1,114. The Library is also responsible for the care of registers that remain in local custody, although until they are transferred it is difficult to ascertain exactly what dates are covered.

Geological history The rocks in Co. Cork largely belong to the Devonian (415-360 million years ago [Ma] to Carboniferous (360-300 Ma] periods. However there is a small occurrence of older Silurian rocks in the northeast of the county on the edge of the Galtee Mountains. For millions of years during the Devonian Ireland was part of a large continent. In general the climate was seasonally wet, and a sparsity of terrestrial vegetation allowed dunes to form in places. Temporary rivers flowed towards the south and in times of rainfall these became torrents with flashflooding and they carried coarse cobbles and pebbles as well as sands downstream. These later were also lithified and are called conglomerates (coarse) and sandstone that collectively make up the Old Red Sandstone.

FormB.S.M.2 STATEMENT BY DAN COAKLEY, Boolamore, Rathcoole, Banteer, Co. Cork. I was born at Boolamore, Rathcoole, on March 12, 1895. My parents were small farmers. I was educated at Rathcoole National School until I was twelve years of age when I left to go to work with other farmers in the area. I joined the Irish Volunteers in Rathcoole early in 1917. The strength of the unit was about twenty-four. The officers were: O/C Jerh. Long. 1st Lieutenant John Lehane. Other members of the company were: Jack Coleman, Jerh. Coleman, Mick Sheehan, Denis Bride, Ned Forde, Roger O'Brien, Neilus Hearne. The company was a unit in Millstreet Battalion, Cork Brigade. Other companies were Lyre, Drishane, Millstreet, Rathduane, Kilcorney and Cullen. The officers of the Millstreet Battalion Were: O/C Con J. Meaney (Sonny) Vice 0/C Con Meaney (Big) Adjutant Jerh. Crowley. Quartermaster John Lehane. John Lehane was replaced in the company by Jerh. Philpott. Training was carried out under our own officers. It mainly consisted of close order foot-drill. It was carried out in the fields around Rathcoole -2- usually at night and on Sunday evenings. The only arms held were a few shotguns the property of members but there was also a Mauser rifle and five round of ammunition.

Big House Burnings Donnelly, Jr. in County Cork during the Irish Revolution, 1920–21* Introduction The burning of Big Houses belonging to landed Protestants and the occasional Catholic was one of the most dramatic features of the Irish Revolution of 1919–23. Of course, the Protestant landed elite was only a shadow of its former self in the southern parts of Ireland by the time that revolution erupted in 1919. But even where land- owners had sold their estates to their tenants, they usually retained considerable demesnes that they farmed commercially, and they still held a variety of appointments under the British crown—as lieuten- ants or deputy lieutenants of counties and as justices of the peace. Symbols of an old regime in landownership that was not yet dead, and loyal to the British crown and empire, members of the tradi- tional elite were objects of suspicion and sometimes outright hostil- ity among IRA members and nationalists more generally. For many Southern Unionists or loyalists with Big Houses and some land, life became extremely uncomfortable and often dangerous after 1919. Nowhere was this truer than in County Cork. This was the third house of the Order. Catherine McAuley, Sr. M. Angela Dunne and two novices came from Baggot Street, via Tullamore. The Sisters went to the Crimean War in 1855, and also made foundtations in Bathurst, New South Wales, Australia, and to Buttevant, and Midleton in Cork, New Inn in Tipperary and Kilmallock in County Limerick. There is a wornderful Heritage Centre now developed there and well worth a visit. It contains artifacts of the early foundation and memorabilal from Mercy Convents in the Province. Skellig Michael (Irish Sceilig Mhichíl, "Michael's rock" A Christian monastery was founded on the island at some point between the 6th and 8th century and remained continuously occupied until it was abandoned in the late 12th century. The Gallarus Oratory (Irish: Séipéilín Ghallarais, literally "The Church of the Place of the Foreigners") is believed to be an early Christian church located on the Dingle Peninsula, County Kerry, Ireland.
