  • New from TCG Books: the Lyons by Nicky Silver
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Dafina McMillan January 7, 2013 [email protected] 212-609-5955 New from TCG Books: The Lyons by Nicky Silver NEW YORK, NY – Theatre Communications Group (TCG) is pleased to announce the publication of The Lyons, the vicious and hilarious new play by Nicky Silver. The critically acclaimed black comedy premiered Off-Broadway at the Vineyard Theatre in fall 2011 before moving to Broadway the following spring, earning a Drama Desk Award nomination for Outstanding Play. “Nicky Silver’s best play since The Food Chain… Hilariously frank, clear-sighted, compassionate and forgiving… laughter that rises in close and regular waves.” ― New York Times Nicky Silver, that “strange progeny of a coupling between Mr. Neil Simon and Edward Albee” (New York Times), has cornered the market on deliciously savage family comedies with this intimate and frightening examination of how we cope with loneliness and disappointment. In The Lyons, Rita Lyons is the matriarch of a family facing a major crossroads. Her husband, Ben, is dying and her grown children are struggling. As the family gathers in Ben’s hospital room, they discover that they’re as terrified of being together as they are of being alone. “Silver's in top form... A funny, furious little tale of family annihilation with honesty, savagery, and humanity, a story about how we all, ultimately, pick out our own urns. It succeeds marvelously.” ― New York Magazine Nicky Silver's plays include seven which have premiered at Vineyard Theatre: Pterodactyls (Oppenheimer Award, Kesselring Award, Drama Desk nomination, Outer Critics Circle nomination), Raised in Captivity (Drama Desk nomination, Outer Critics Circle nomination), The Eros Trilogy, The Maiden’s Prayer, My Marriage to Ernest Borgnine (Vineyard Lab Production), The Altruists, Beautiful Child and The Agony and the Agony (Vineyard Lab Production).

Under Communism, Czech theatre had been highly political through veiled protests against the system of power. After 1989, Czech theatre began moving into spheres of commodification and tourism. How the ELTs in Prague negotiated their place in a shifting society reveals a performance of identity. The ELTs tracked the turning points in Czech post-revolutionary history of the 1990s. The history of the ELTs has been constructed through personal and telephone interviews and emails, as well as reviews, articles, manuscripts and production videotapes.
