Battle of Marathon LO: To retell the events of The Battle of Marathon. Battle of Marathon Athens & Sparta What can you re-call from last lesson? Persia • The Persian King (King Darius) decided he wanted to take over Greece. • It often attacked Greek colonies • Athens often sent soldiers to help them. • The Greeks were unable to stop the Persian armies when they decided to attack. Who might the Athenians ask for help? Spartans were highly regarded as epic warriors Sparta and Athens decided to join together to fight the Persians. Battle Commences! • In 492 BC, King Darius of Persia ordered the Greeks to obey him. • In 490 BC he travelled with his army to fight at the Bay of Marathon – this fight is known as the Battle of Marathon. Pheidippides As soon as the Athenians realised the Persians were coming to attack Greece, they sent a fast runner called Pheidippides, to run all the way to Sparta to ask for help But the Spartans were celebrating a religious festival and would not come until the next full moon. But then..... One of the Athenian officers had a clever plan. A plan that had never been used before. Would it work? The Athenians attacked! They came from the sides! The Persians could not believe it! They got confused, they broke the ranks and gave the Athenians the chance to get behind them. The Persian army was defeated! The Persians fled to their ships and left. They lost more than 6000 men. The Athenians only lost 192. The Spartans were amazed that the small Athenian army could defeat that enormous and powerful Persian army. • After staying to help defeat the Persians, Pheidippides was told to run to Athens (26 miles away) and tell the people all about the victory. • When he arrived he fell to the ground and said: ‘Nike’ (that means we won) but died of exhaustion after delivering the news. Our top story tonight - thousands of Athenian and Persian soldiers gathered at the Bay of Marathon to battle against each other to fight for the Greek land! Coming up in tonight's programme Spartans celebrate their religious festival, declining the offer to fight! Pheidippides is the lead runner, aiding the Athenians to spread messages. Miltiades leads the Athenians to a surprising win at the Bay of Marathon. We will be hearing from Miltiades, Pheidippides and the Persian King. Finally, in a dramatic battle, the Athenians strategic plan of surrounding the Persian army lead to their victory, killing over 6,000 soldiers! What a win for them! That’s all from me tonight. Join us again tomorrow at the same time. Formal language: Example: Good evening. Use of stock phrases. Use of connectives. A news reporter never gives his or her own opinion of what has happened, so news reports are never written in the first person, ‘I believe...’ Reporters maintain a distance from the news by using more formal language and an impassive voice, e.g. reports also said that… Structure: It begins with the newsreader introducing themself by name. This is creates a sense of reassurance as sometimes viewers may be upset by the news and they want to be able to trust the newsreader. It then gives a list of the headlines. They are short and snappy and written in note form. After the headlines the script moves onto give more details about each headline in order. News Report Have you remembered?     The Persian Wars: Ionian Revolt The Ionian Revolt, which began in 499 B.C. marked the beginning of the Greek-Persian wars. In 546 B.C. the Persians had conquered the wealthy Greek settlements in Ionia (Asia Minor). The Persians took the Ionians’ farmland and harbors. They forced the Ionians to pay tributes (the regular payments of goods). The Ionians also had to serve in the Persian army. The Ionians knew they could not defeat the Persians by themselves, so they asked mainland Greece for help. Athens sent soldiers and a small fleet of ships. Unfortunately for the Ionians, the Athenians went home after their initial success, leaving the small Ionian army to fight alone. In 493 B.C. the Persian army defeated the Ionians. To punish the Ionians for rebelling, the Persians destroyed the city of Miletus. They may have sold some of tis people into slavery. The Persian Wars: Battle of Marathon After the Ionian Revolt, the Persian King Darius decided to conquer the city-states of mainland Greece. He sent messengers to ask for presents of Greek earth and water as a sign that the Greeks agreed to accept Persian rule. But the Greeks refused. Darius was furious. In 490 B.C., he sent a large army of foot soldiers and cavalry (mounted soldiers) across the Aegean Sea by boat to Greece. The army assembled on the pain of Marathon. A general named Miltiades (Mill-te-ah-deez) convinced the other Greek commanders to fight the Persians at Marathon. In need of help, the Athenians sent a runner named Pheidippides (Fa-dip-e-deez) to Sparta who ran for two days and two nights.

    ANCIENT HISTORY 500 – 440 BC Evaluate the contribution of Miltiades and Themistocles to the Greek victory over the Persians from 490 to 479 BC. During the Persian Wars a number of personalities arose to challenge the threat from across the Aegean, all of them with personal motivations, strategies, diplomatic initiatives and policies. Greek politics were tense at the time of the Persian wars as Herodotus reports,“Among the Athenian commanders opinion was divided”. Some of the prominent personalities of both Athens and Sparta include Aristides, Themistocles, Leonidas, Miltiades and Pausanius. However it was Miltiades and Themistocles that made the greatest contribution to Greek Victory. Both Miltiades and Themistocles used their prior experience as well as thought out tactics to outplay the ‘unbeatable’ Persian army. Separately, these two personalities successfully led the Greeks to victory through the battles of Marathon and Salamis, as well as a number of significant catalysts. Despite this, the contribution of Themistocles to the Persian Wars may have been greater than that of Miltiades due to the lasting effect his changes made to the entire war effort but this may have been due to the length of their time in power. Miltiades was not always respected by his Athenian counterparts as previous to the Persian Wars he had acted as vassal to the Persian King, Darius I. The Ionian Revolt proved a great turning point for many Greeks who were under Persian influence. Miltiades joined the revolt and returned to Athens but was imprisoned for the crime of tyranny with the sentence of death. However, he was able to prove himself anti-Persian and was released.

By Kenneth W. Williams PHEIDIPPIDES FORCED himself to stir. Just to move required supreme effort. He was amazed at the force of the arrow that stuck him and knocked him to the dust. In actuality, the arrow had done little more than graze his arm, but the force of that glancing blow spun him and threw him to the ground. Stunned, he contemplated the physics behind the event while he tried to regain his footing and resume his charge toward the Persians. It was such a foolish thing to be thinking about while Persian arrows flew all round him, but one’s mind can do such strange things in battle. The little olive tree under which he now rested offered precious little shade from the relentless sun. He shifted, in search of a position that allowed his weary body a moment’s rest. His weariness was bone-deep, born of too many miles in too few days. His hands were still stained with blood from the recent carnage. It was hot—far hotter than it should be in the middle of September. His armor—helmet; shield, breastplate, and greaves—attracted and magnified the rays of the fierce sun. September was always a hot month in Greece, but this year it was ever hotter than usual. The gentle breeze from the nearby Aegean did not help.

    The Battle Of Marathon September 490 BC by Major General Dimitris Gedeon, HEAR Note: The term "Greek" and "Greece" are generally used when quoting other sources. In my own text I use, when appropriate, the terms "Hellas" for Greece and "Hellenes" for Greeks. The period of Greek history between 492 - 479 BC is marked by «The Persian Wars». This was a period of contest between the city-states of Greece and the powerful Persian Empire. The Persian Wars had their roots in the expansion policy of the Persians. It was impossible for them to expand their empire eastwards (towards India) or beyond Egypt (because of the Libyan Desert) or towards the inhospitable land of the Scythes (northwards); therefore, their only choice was to advance westwards, towards the European Continent. Greece formed the main barrier the Persians had to overcome in order to achieve their objective, with Athens being their most decisive opponent in Greece. The Persians were in need only of a pretext and Athens provided it in 500 BC when the Greek city-states of Ionia in Asia Minor, being part of the Persian Empire, revolted against the Persian rule. Athens sent twenty ships to their assistance while the small city of Eretrtia of Euboea island contributed with five ships. Initially, their efforts met with success and the insurgents managed to burn down Sardis, the capital of the Persian satrapy of Ionia, but they were soon defeated by the Persians. The news of some unknown city-states of mainland Greece providing their assistance to the insurgents made the Persian King, Darius, wonder “what kind of a city Athens was”! When he was briefed on those insolent Athenians, he became so angry that he fired an arrow skywards and vowed to punish them.

First Invasion of Greece Darius I, King of Persia, decided he wanted to conquer the Greeks in 490 BC. He gathered a vast army of soldiers that outnumbered any army the Greeks could put together. They boarded the Persian fleet and headed to Greece. Battle of Marathon The Persian fleet landed at the Bay of Marathon, about 25 miles from the city of Athens. The Persians had a lot more soldiers, but they underestimated the fighting capability of the Greeks. The army of Athens defeated the Persian army killing around 6,000 Persians and only losing 192 Greeks.

Angered by the insolence of Athens and Eretria, which had recently supplied aid to rebelling Ionian cities, the Persian king Darius dispatched his generals Datis and Ataphernes “with the charge to reduce Athens and Eretria to slavery and to bring the slaves back into his presence.” Both Herodotus and Plato saw this dispatch as a mere pretext to accomplish his true aim: to enslave all of Greece and Europe.1 He moved first against the Eretrians, “reputed to be amongst the noblest and most warlike of the Hellenes of that day (and they were numer- ous); but he conquered them all in three days.”2 Having accomplished his objective against Eretria, Darius next turned his gaze to Athens, leaving it and its citizens to decide whether they ought to attempt to resist their seemingly inevitable defeat.3 Faced with almost certain ruin, many Athenian generals did not wish to fight, “seeing that they were too few to fight with the army of the Medes.” With the voting generals evenly split between those for and against fighting, the deciding vote was to be cast by Callimachos, the polemarch.
