Food Selection by Northern Yellow-cheeked Crested Gibbons (Nomascus annamensis)in Northern Cambodia Naven Hon A thesis submitted to Victoria University of Wellington in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Ecology and Biodiversity School of Biological Sciences Victoria University of Wellington New Zealand 2016 i Abstract Tropical regions have extremely high plant diversity, which in turn supports a high diversity of animals. However, not all plant species are selected by animals as food sources, with some herbivores selecting only specific plants as food as not all plants have the same nutrient make up. Animals must select which food items to include in their diets, as the amount and type of nutrients in their diet can affect lifespan, health, fitness, and reproduction. Gibbon populations have declined significantly in recent years due to habitat destruction and hunting. Northern yellow-cheeked crested gibbon (Nomascus annamensis) is a newly described species, and has a limited distribution restricted to Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam. The northern yellow-cheeked crested gibbons play an important role in seed dispersal, yet little is currently known about this species, including its food selection and nutritional needs. However, data on food selection and nutritional composition of selected food items would greatly inform the conservation of both wild and captive populations of this species. This study aims to quantify food selection by the northern yellow-cheeked crested gibbons by investigating the main plant species consumed and the influence of the availability of food items on their selection. The study also explores the nutritional composition of food items consumed by this gibbon species and identifying key plant species that provide these significant nutrients. -

The study aimed to document plant diversity and to identify interesting, endemic, rare and threatened plant species which were considered high conservation value species. A total of 413 species from 82 families were recorded from the study area of which 93 taxa were endemic to Borneo, including 10 endemic to Sabah. These high conservation value species are key conservation targets for any forested area such as ICCA. Proper knowledge of plant diversity and their conservation status is vital for the formulation of a forest management plan for the Batu Timbang area. The structures were determined by spectroscopic methods including the 2D-NMR techniques. Compound 1-4 showed moderate cytotoxic activity against P-388 murine leukemia cells. Tropical lowland rain forest is recognized by its high species richness with very few trees per species. It is also known for having tendency to outcrossing of its species with different floral sexualities, which requires the synchronization between flowering of its trees and the presence of pollinators. Such ecological attributes raise possible constraints for the forest trees to regenerate. The objective of the study was to assess the potential risk of failed regeneration for each tree species of the forest. Each of species with dbh of more than 5 cm in a one-ha plot was collected, identified, and its ecological criteria, including rarity, floral sexuality, seed size, and flowering phenology were determined. The potential risk of the failure of regeneration was calculated by summing all scores from Analytical Hierarchical Process of the criteria. The results indicated that the forest consisted of 118 species belonging to 69 genera and 37 families. Rare species accounted to 52.10% of the total species. -

This paper reviews the biogeography and ecology of the family Meliaceae and maps many of the clades. Recently published molecular phylogenies are used as a framework to interpret distributional and ecological data. The sections on distribution concentrate on allopatry, on areas of overlap among clades, and on centres of diversity. The sections on ecology focus on populations of the family that are not in typical, dry-ground, lowland rain forest, for example, in and around mangrove forest, in peat swamp and other kinds of freshwater swamp forest, on limestone, and in open vegetation such as savanna woodland. Information on the altitudinal range of the genera is presented, and brief notes on architecture are also given. The paper considers the relationship between the distribution and ecology of the taxa, and the interpretation of the fossil record of the family, along with its significance for biogeographic studies. Finally, the paper discusses whether the evolution of Meliaceae can be attributed to ‘radiations’ from restricted centres of origin into new morphological, geographical and ecological space, or whether it is better explained by phases of vicariance in widespread ancestors, alternating with phases of range expansion. A floristic survey was conducted in submontane forest of Block Pulus Mount Burangrang West Java. The objectives of the study were to inventory vascular plant and do quantitative measurements of floristic composition as well as their structure vegetation in the submontane forest of Nature Reserves Mt. Burangrang, Purwakarta West Java. Samples were recorded using exploration methods, in the hiking traill of Mt. Burangrang, from 946 to 1110 m asl. Vegetation analysis was done using sampling plots methods, with plot size of 500 m2 in four locations. Result was that 208 species of vascular plant consisting of basal family of angiosperm (1 species), magnoliids (21 species), monocots (33 species), eudicots (1 species), superrosids (1 species), rosids (74 species), superasterids (5 species), and asterids (47), added with 25 species of pterydophytes were found in the area. -

J. 37 : 5 (Suppl.) : 66-71 (2006) ว. วิทย. กษ. 37 : 5 (พิเศษ) : 66-71 (2549) กิจกรรมในการตอตานเชื้อราของสารเคมในกลี ุม flavaglines จากพืชสกุล Aglaia Antifungal activity of flavaglines from Aglaia species เนตรนภสิ เขียวขาํ 1 Harald Greger2 และ สมศิริ แสงโชติ1 Netnapis Khewkhom1, Harald Greger2 and Somsiri Sangchote1 Abstract Lipophilic crude extracts of Aglaia argentea, A. oligophylla, A. elaeagnoidea, A. spectabilis, and A. cucullata (Meliaceae) were tested on their effectiveness on growth inhibition of posthavest pathogens. Bioassay- guided fractionation led to the isolation of three active flavaglines. These were elucidated and identified by using spectroscopic methods (NMR, UV and IR) as aglafoline and didesmethylrocaglamide from A. argentea, and rocaglaol from A. oligophylla. A 96-well microbioassay revealed that rocaglaol produced high growth inhibition of Botrytis cinerea, Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, and Pestalotiopsis sp. With EC50 values at 0.05 μg/mL against Pestalotiopsis sp., 1.2 μg/mL against Botrytis cinerea, and 52 μg/mL against Colletrotrichum gloeosporioides. The activity of rocaglaol is comparable with or sometimes even higher as commercial fungicides. This page intentionally left blank The Ecology of Trees in the Tropical Rain Forest Current knowledge of the ecology of tropical rain-forest trees is limited, with detailed information available for perhaps only a few hundred of the many thousands of species that occur. Yet a good understanding of the trees is essential to unravelling the workings of the forest itself. This book aims to summarise contemporary understanding of the ecology of tropical rain-forest trees. The emphasis is on comparative ecology, an approach that can help to identify possible adaptive trends and evolutionary constraints and which may also lead to a workable ecological classification for tree species, conceptually simplifying the rain-forest community and making it more amenable to analysis. The organisation of the book follows the life cycle of a tree, starting with the mature tree, moving on to reproduction and then considering seed germi- nation and growth to maturity. Topics covered therefore include structure and physiology, population biology, reproductive biology and regeneration. The book concludes with a critical analysis of ecological classification systems for tree species in the tropical rain forest. IAN TURNERhas considerable first-hand experience of the tropical rain forests of South-East Asia, having lived and worked in the region for more than a decade. After graduating from Oxford University, he took up a lecturing post at the National University of Singapore and is currently Assistant Director of the Singapore Botanic Gardens. He has also spent time at Harvard University as Bullard Fellow, and at Kyoto University as Guest Professor in the Center for Ecological Research.
