3 WALKING THE TRAIL…… About the College

When Sundarban Mahavidyalaya was established on 4th August 1965, it was a landmark event for many thousands of students and parents of the Sundarbans and beyond, as the absence of a college in this vast area meant that the dreams of higher education and improved economic conditions were a remote possibility for most children studying in the numerous schools dotting the Sundarban area.

Studying amidst verdant greens

The generous donations of land and money from a group of dedicated people and the moral and emotional support of the people of the Sundarbans and surrounding areas enabled the establishment of this College. It is a collective vision that galvanized the growth of this institution and inspired its staff and governing body to overcome every hurdle, whether economic, geographic or social. It received affiliation with the and was subsequently recognized by the University Grants Commission.Sundarban Mahavidyalaya began its journey teaching the Bachelors Degree Program for Arts subjects under the aegis of the University of Calcutta. Over the years, with expansion in infrastructure and space with grants from Expanding the scope the UGC, Zilla Parishad and the MPLAD, the scope of programmes offered of higher education in the Sundarbans by the College improved and options and opportunities increased for the students here.

Students can now pursue Honours in all the subjects offered by the Arts, Science and Commerce Departments at our institution. At the same time General Degree Courses are also offered, so that students may be able to choose programmes appropriate to their predilection and career plans.

The motto of this college derives from the clarion call, “Arise , awake…stop not till the goal is reached.” It is our vision to provide the possibility of higher education to the widest cross section of people, thereby encouraging the spread of literacy amongst future generations of students and awareness among the older members of students’ families as well.

We strongly believe that even one member of the family pursuing college education can expand the vision of many more in the family and influence them to send more youngsters to school and college.

4 When our dear students graduate and move onto higher studies in the University or join work, the pride and joy we feel along with their families inspires us to strive on, continually improving our own infrastructure and opportunities for these bright and enthusiastic minds we tutor.

23 On site—at Kakdwip

The proximity to Ganga-sagar makes Kakdwip an important halt on the tourist map of West Bengal, as people would find it convenient to travel through Kakdwip on their way to the annual holy dip in Sagar.

Upgraded to a full-fledged Sub Division, Kakdwip acts as a gateway to the South Sundarbans which attracts a steady stream of visitors who travel distances to marvel at the dense forests of mangroves, the nework of subtributaries and animal and aquatic resources of this yet untrammelled area. Sailing through the college years

Most of the people here work as fishermen or farmers. While it cuts a pretty picture from afar, on coming close, one realizes the acute poverty they have to battle on a daily basis. Most of the students at Sundarban Mahavidyalaya are first generation learners. Sending their children to school and then college is a brave step for many people of the vast area we call the Sundarbans. In this scenario, our institution does the best it can in supporting the aspirations of the parents and children who dare to dream amidst such difficulties. Dense mangrove vegetation

24 CLEAN CAMPUS, GREEN CAMPUS

The college in its efforts at increasing awareness regarding the importance of preserving the environment and increasing the green cover of the college, organizes regular campus cleaning programmes, where the students actively clean their own campus, understanding the importance of cleanliness and hygiene and their role in improving and maintaining their own environment.

25 SPORTS AND CULTURAL PROGRAMS

KEEPING THE BODY AND MIND AGILE: The college understands the importance of encouraging sports as both an academic discipline in the form of the bachelors degree course in physical education as well as organizing regular sports events in the college, to ensure students’ physical and mental fitness and prowess both on and off the field. Besides the much awaited annual sports day, students practise and prepare for inter-college sports competitions and district level meets. Music, song, dance, poetry and debating skills in students are honed to perfection in their college years, as they participate in different cultural events throughout the year.

26 The function of education, therefore, is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically… Intelligence plus character–that is the goal of true education. The complete education gives one not only power of concentration, but worthy objectives upon which to concentrate.
