Barrington has a thriving community with amenities to include a parish church, village inn, pre-school and village hall. There is also Barrington Court, a particularly fine property owned by the National Trust. Dillington House is nearby, which is the centre for professional development, adult A beautifully presented detached house standing in lovely gardens, education and the arts. Ilminster is a former market town, situated about 2 miles south situated in the heart of this sought after hamlet. west of Atherstone, and is surrounded by undulating open countryside, little of which has changed over centuries. A major proportion of the town centre falls within the conservation area with many character buildings. The town centre offers a range of shopping facilities and amenities together with schooling at primary and intermediate levels and churches of various denominations. Taunton, the County Town of Somerset, is approximately 12 miles away and offers excellent shopping and recreational facilities, including several golf courses and a racecourse. Taunton's train station provides main line rail links to the rest of the country with junction 25 of the M5 motorway on the eastern side of the town. Description Woodpeckers is an attractive detached house built of natural stone elevations under a tiled roof. The house has been improved and renovated by the current owner, taking advantage of the wonderful setting and the main reception rooms enjoy lovely views overlooking the garden. A traditional cross passage hallway provides access to the reception rooms and opens to the oak framed rear boot room. The reception rooms are both dual aspect, the dining room having an open fireplace with inset woodburner and the sitting room also has a woodburner. The kitchen has a light open feel, with an opening to the dining room. The kitchen is fully fitted with an inset hob and oven, space for a fridge, a single drainer sink unit and from the kitchen, there is access to the stone barn. Adjoining the hall is a downstairs cloakroom/utility room with a low level WC and a Belfast sink. On the first floor there are four bedrooms, all enjoying views south over the garden, and there is a family bathroom with a low level WC, wash hand basin and panelled bath with shower over. The landing has exposed painted wooden floorboards, which also continues into the bathroom. Garage/Workshop Adjoining the property and accessed via double garage doors or from the kitchen, is the garage/workshop, which offers excellent space currently used as garaging and as a workshop area. This space has the potential to be incorporated further into the house, subject to the necessary planning consents. The garage is easily accessed via a large parking and turning area. There are a further range of small outbuildings in the gardens. Gardens The gardens of the property are an outstanding feature and predominantly lie to the south, including areas of lawn at different levels with low stone walling and pathways. There is a raised garden with an area of raised beds, which adjoins the stone built outbuilding. There is a delightful patio to the rear of the property and an extensive range of specimen trees throughout the garden. The property adjoins open farmland, belonging to the Dillington Estate and benefits from lovely views. Directions Leave Taunton on the A358 in an easterly direction heading towards Ilminster. After 7.5 miles, turn left signposted to Barrington Court. Proceed along this road and after approximately 2.5 miles, turn left at the T-junction. DeDicattons of tfte Cfjutcbcs of ©ometsetsftire. BY THE KEY. E. H. BATES, M.A HE late Mr. W illiam Long contributed to the seventeenth “L volume of the Proceedings in 1871 a classified list of the Church Dedications given by Ecton in his Thesaurus Rerum Ecclesiasticarum, 1742. As Editor of the Bath and Wells Diocesan Kalendar my attention has been frequently drawn, from my own knowledge as well as by numerous correspon- dents, to the many errors and gaps in that list. It became plainly necessary to go behind the Thesaurus to the original sources of information. And here I may be allowed to repro- duce what I have already stated in the preface to the Kalendar for 1905. It should be clearly understood that there is no authoritative list in existence. Among the Public Becords are two works known as Pope Nicholas’ Taxatio of 1291, and the Valor Ec- clesiasticus of 27 Henry VIII (1536), containing the names of all parishes in England and Wales. These were primarily drawn up to ascertain the value of the benefices, and only in- cidentally, as in the case of towms with many churches, are the dedications added. The latter work, to which the title of V^ahr Ecclesiasticus or Liber Regis is generally given, was first printed in 1711 by J ohn Ecton. His preface contains a very interesting account of the early work of the Queen Anne’s Bounty Fund, of which he was Receiver, and of the serious state of affairs in the large towns which led to its foundation.

WADE, M.A. _With Thirty-two Illustrations and Two Maps_ page 1 / 318 "Upon smooth Quantock's airy ridge we roved." London Methuen & Co 36 Essex St. Strand [Illustration: Hand drawn Routes of the Somerset & Dorset Railway] PREFACE The general scheme of this Guide is determined by that of the series of which it forms part. But a number of volumes by different writers are never likely to be quite uniform in character, even though planned on the same lines; and it seems desirable to explain shortly the aim we have had in view in writing our own little book. In our accounts of places of interest we have subordinated the historical to the descriptive element; and whilst we have related pretty fully in the Introduction the events of national importance which have taken place within the county, we have not devoted much space to family histories. We have made it our chief purpose to help our readers to see for themselves what is best worth seeing. If, in carrying out our design, we appear to have treated inadequately many interesting country seats, our excuse must be that such are naturally not very accessible to the ordinary tourist, whose needs we have sought to supply. And if churches and church architecture seem to receive undue attention, it may be page 2 / 318 pleaded that Somerset is particularly rich in ecclesiastical buildings, and affords excellent opportunities for the pursuit of a fascinating study.
