Average rating 4. He strove to the best because it hurt so much not to be A brutally honest book from a perfectionist than changed the game of rugby forever with one kick in I both languished with his falls, and his many injuries, and yet rose with the many triumphs, from World cup glory , to which I also own a copy of the World Cup dvd, which is glorious indeed and well worth watching or even owning to his very joyous satisfaction and success with Toulon. That said, if you based your perception of him solely on his own prose, the stats at the end are not consistent at all with the impression he leaves! Jun 10, David rated it it was amazing. The rest of this review can be found elsewhere. His modesty also struck me - he concentrates more on his mistakes and bad games than he does on his achievements, but I guess that is also the perfectionist coming through. One of the cover notes says "searingly honest" and it is. That however is no criticism on the book in any way - I can't fault when it was written! Here he tells of the physical toll he knew his body was taking from rugby, even from his youth; he tells of how he never wanted to be a kicking fly-half but learned to adapt his natural game to play the style that Clive Woodward believed necessary to win a World Cup, and how he nearly walked out on Martin Johnson's England team 13 years later. It is an uplifting ending for what seems a genuinely good bloke to use a good English, that is British colloquial phrase. I think an updated version of this book should be realeased to cover his success at Toulon which is probably one of his greatest achievments. I just love Jonny Wilkinson, he is my hero!! I enjoyed the book as a Jonny fan, eternally grateful for that moment of magic at Sydney's Telstra Stadium on November 22nd Start your review of Jonny: My Autobiography. Recently Viewed. If he misses the ninth, he starts over. JONNY BE GOOD After the England team to face Scotland in the final group game of this year's World Cup had been announced, Jonny Wilkinson stood near a corner of a large room surrounded by so many reporters that even those in the middle of the huddle could barely hear what the quietly spoken fly-half was saying. From the opening chapters about his childhood the pain of failure is almost unbearable. These are cookies that have not yet been categorized. Rating details. I found the lack of quotation marks particularly disturbing, especially for the amount of mostly unnecessary dialogue the book contains. With Northampton making their move up the table after getting players back from the World Cup, France and England will be armed with their form teams in the tournament. Apr 02, Bee Squire rated it really liked it. But the peculiar calmness with which he played the game masked a very different reality. Sep 11, Tom rated it really liked it. After the England team to face Scotland in the final group game of this year's World Cup had been announced, Jonny Wilkinson stood near a corner of a large room surrounded by so many reporters that even those in the middle of the huddle could barely hear what the quietly spoken fly-half was saying. What an incredible insight into the life of a world class athlete. Amazing insight into near mental illness level of perfectionism. Racing-Metro look an outside bet, while even without O'Driscoll, Leinster look equipped to make the last eight as top seeds. Amazing that he bounced back from so many potential career- threatening injuries. In Jonny, he reveals the extraordinary psychology that he had to tame in order to be able to dominate his sport. Knew he was a perfectionist but had no idea to what extreme. The autobiography reveals Wilkinson to be a tortured soul, constantly questioning beating himself up: when he was first called into the England squad at the age of 18, he said he wanted to hide and even more than a year later enjoyed the sanctuary of his hotel room. Jonny: My Autobiography Writer He endured a succession of injuries that kept him out of international action for over three years but he returned to kick the England rugby team to the final of the World Cup. It was interesting to get an insight into one of England's greatest ever sport stars. What an incredible insight into the life of a world class athlete. With simple sentences, he explains his entire life and it is really really interesting. I liked this book a lot, but as with other reviewers Jonny is one of my favorite Rugby players, ever, so my review may also be a bit askew. Sep 07, Alan Davies rated it liked it. This book, better than any other I've read, shows us what goes on in a mind like his. He has since won 87 caps for his country and is the leading point-scorer in test rugby. He contrasted England with Toulon where, in contrast to England, he felt a sense of belonging. A great personal account. Ultimately however this helped him become arguably the best English player of This was a good read from a clearly intelligent and self aware legend of the game. Leinster, the holders, have been made joint favourites with Toulouse to win the Heineken Cup, which starts this weekend, despite being without their Ireland captain Brian O'Driscoll for the entire campaign. About Jonny Wilkinson. Perhaps slightly biased as he is my hero, but I love reading his view on aspects of his life that the media have already scrutinised! Their trip was not incident-free: there was a scene after the quarter-final victory over Ireland, but as it happened in the privacy of the squad's hotel in Wellington, it was easily hushed up. Hardcover , pages. Really love his approach to the game and the amount he was prepared to get stuck in. To see what your friends thought of this book, please sign up. In addition, it is a chronicle of rugby in the s and s, the highs of the World Cup and the lows of the World Cup. It is an uplifting ending for what seems a genuinely good bloke to use a good English, that is British colloquial phrase. Your browser is currently not set to accept cookies. His obsession for perfection left you with the impression of someone with an introverted character as also indicated by his pathological mistrust of the media. The autobiography reveals Wilkinson to be a tortured soul, constantly questioning beating himself up: when he was first called into the England squad at the age of 18, he said he wanted to hide and even more than a year later enjoyed the sanctuary of his hotel room. In JONNY, he reveals the extraordinary psychology that he had to tame in order to be able to dominate his sport. They told him not to make a hasty decision, and that November Wilkinson was at Twickenham for the series of friendly internationals, watching from the bench as Toby Flood helps orchestrate a victory over Australia that, for the first time under Johnson, sees England tagged as genuine World Cup contenders. They were not considered to be a suitable partnership at and England persevered with Shontayne Hape at inside-centre, turning to Mike Tindall at the end of the group stage in the World Cup. In JONNY, he reveals the extraordinary psychology that he had to tame in order to be able to dominate his sport. So the prospect of Wilkinson's autobiography being anything other than an exercise in circumlocution looked remote, especially when its title was revealed: Jonny. The issue was not that players relaxed by having a few beers — England were hardly alone in enjoying downtime and even the winners New Zealand had to grapple with excess — but that the professionalism that had characterised their previous two World Cup campaigns was, like the tournament balls Wilkinson had such a hard time with, veering in the wrong direction.

Now in Our Welcome, 31st Year! George Alexander Vol. 31 No. 5 August 2013 Louis BRITAIN’S new prince has been named George Alexan- der Louis. Speculation over what moniker Prince William and his wife, Kate, would pick for their first child ended just two days after the baby’s birth. Kensington Palace said the royals were “delighted to announce” their son’s name, adding that the Two-day-old baby and third-in-line to the throne will be known as “His Royal Highness Prince George of Cambridge.” Noble names are steeped in history, which explains why thousands of bets rolled in to British bookmakers for the name George, the name of six previous British kings. The moniker evokes the steadfastness of the queen’s father, George VI, who rallied the nation during World War II. Meaning farmer or earth worker, George was the 12th most popular name for boys born in England and Wales in 2011. St George, a fourth-century Chris- tian martyr, is the patron saint of England. The All Blacks went into their final tour match having recorded victories over Wales, Scotland and England: the Barbarians, as is their tradition, had limited preparation, an uncapped player and an obligation to attack. However, the Barbarians' side was comprised of many of the truly great players of the era - Duckham, Gibson, JPR Williams, Bennett, Edwards, McBride and Carmichael - and together they were to produce a truly remarkable team performance, including a try from Gareth Edwards in the third minute which has proved, with the passage of time, to have been one of the best in the history of the game. Soon, the All Blacks, with outstanding players like Going, Batty and Williams, began to match their opponents' exhilarating quality.
