La Imaginación Como Condición De Posibilidad De Las Ciencias 1 LA IMAGINACIÓN COMO CONDICIÓN DE POSIBILIDAD DE LAS CIENCIAS 1 Luis Flores H. Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile 1. La cuestión del origen de las ciencias m¡ 1 i1 El problema que nos planteamoses el del origen de las ciencias. En cuanto íl a la extensión del término "ciencia", nos restringimosal caso de las ciencias empíricasnaturales, en especial,al de la físicay al de la biología. Por "origen" enten­ demos el conjunto de condiciones ontológicas, gnoseológicas y antropológicasciertas que posibilitanla ciencia. Nuestrointerés es filosóficoy no de tipo psicológico o socioló­ gico. Ahora bien, dentrode la ampliatrama del origen, buscamos determinar condiciones de posibilidad gnoseológico-antropológicaque tienen que ver con el modo como el científico elabora sus objetos científicosa partirde los fenómenos. Nuestra propuesta es que la imaginación, considerada desde los puntos de vista cognitivo y antropológico,juega un papel fundamentalen la cuestióndel origen de las ciencias y, por ende, no cumple una función meramente pedagógica o ilustrativa. Por "posturas racionalistas" respecto del origen de las ciencias entendemos aquéllas que enfatizan el papel de la razón (o del entendimiento) y, por ende, de las ideas, de los conceptos (según las terminologíasTractatus de las distintas filosofías). La expre­ sión racional máxima de esta tendencia es la lógica, la cualconstituye el formato del discurso científico.Al respecto, véase el de Wittgenstein(Wittgenstein 1993). Por "posturas empiristas" respecto del origen de las ciencias entendemos aquéllas que centranel pivote del origen en las sensaciones, las impresiones, las experiencias (según las terminologías de las distintas filosofías). Sin duda, ha habido posiciones hfüridas que toman aspectos de ambas como el positivismo lógico. Asimismo las posturas racionalista pura y empirista pura no son sino límites ideales inexistentes. Al interior de la filosofía trascenden­ tal, Kant define la imaginación de este modo: "La imaginación es la facultad de re­ presentar un objeto en la intuición incluso cuando éste no se halla presente" (Kant 1978, B 151). Esta tesis kantiana es reorquestada por los filósofos neokantianos que piensan la ciencia (Cassirer 1969). Por otra parte, el positivismo lógico del Círculo de Viena (Carnap, Schlick, etc.) y el del Círculo de Berlín (Hempel, Reichenbach, etc.) renovaronel empirismo (veáse el papel de los enunciados protocolariosen Otto Neurath), pero introdujeron la lógica de primer orden, la sintaxis lógica (Carnap) como marco teórico de lo empírico. K. Popper, a su vez, cuestiona el psicologismo de Carnapdesde su Logik der Forschung aparecidapor primera vez en 1934 (Popper 1959). Mas, Popper reivindica el papel de la razón en la discusión científica,reinstaura una neo-Ilustración, en la cual la tarea de la imaginación no está claramenteasignada. Posteriormente, la contribución de autores como N. R. Hanson y Thomas Kuhn pro­ pone la nítida tesis de que las observaciones están cargadas de teoría y esto replantea el problema de cómo se vinculan teoría y experiencia. Por ejemplo, para Kuhn, no hay "mere facts": los hechos científicos existen solo dentro del nicho ecológico del paradigma. No hay que olvidar aquí el papel jugado por la Gestaltpsychologie en la argumentaciónde estos autores. Sin embargo, estos no presentanun desarrolloespe­ cíficoen cuanto alorigen de estas observaciones impregnadas de teoría. En su Structure of Scientific Revolutions, plantea que no basta la lógica paraexplicar la ciencia, sino que también es necesaria la persuasión (Kuhn 1970, cap. XII), pero no examina el papel de las metáforasy de las imágenes en aquélla. La tendencia historicista, inicia­ da por Kuhn, es continuada por l. Lakatos y se radicaliza con P. Feyerabend. En éste, la ciencia se desperfila respecto de otras producciones de la cultura y ya no hay en­ tonces una razón científicatransparente, pues intervienen la pasión y la imaginación. Sin embargo, creemos que aquí no existe una función precisa para la imaginación atemperada por la razón (Feyerabend 1970). Ciertas filosofías, como las de Husserl y Wittgenstein, las cuales han revalori­ zado la contribuciónde la imaginación en el método de la filosofía, permiten proyec­ tar esta visión a la ciencia. La fenomenología husserliana concibe la imaginación como vivencia intencional de la conciencia, cuyo correlato es lo imaginado, en cuan­ to objeto intencional. En suma, la imaginación se difracta en una noesis y un noema típicos.En cuanto al método filosófico, Husserl sostiene "que la 'ficción' constituye el elemento vital de la fenomenologíacomo de toda ciencia eidética; que la ficciónes la fuentede donde saca su sustento el conocimiento de las 'verdades eternas' "(Husserl 1950, §70, p. 158). En cuanto a Wittgenstein, éste nos orienta a buscarlos juegos de lenguaje en los cuales funciona la imaginación científica y, por ende, a describir la gramática del "imaginar" en general y del "imaginar científico"en particular. Por ejemplo, cuando Torricelli extrapolala hidroestática y la hidrodinámicahacia la na­ ciente neumática, ¿en qué juego de lenguaje se formula expresiones como: "Y si hubiera un mar de aire"? En cuanto al método filosófico, Wittgenstein concibe la imaginación al servicio de la construcciónde juegos de lenguaje imaginarios,al modo de los Gedankenexperimente (véase, por ejemplo, Wittgenstein 1993, PI, §312). 44 La imaginación como condición de posibilidad de las ciencias Revista de Filosofía 2. Debates epistemológicos en torno a la imaginación científica Gaston Bachelard es sensible alpapel de las imágenes en la ciencia, pero ad­ vierte su peligro: "El peligro de las metáforasinmediatas parala formacióndel espí­ ritu científico es que ellas no son siempre imágenes que pasan, ellas incitan a un pensamiento autónomo; ellas tienden a completarse, a acabarse en el reino de la ima­ gen" (Bachelard 1975, p. 81). Por eso, "todas estas imágenes pueriles, comprendi­ das, de alguna manera, por sus rasgos exteriores, están lejos de ser las más actuantes" (Bachelard 1975, p. 82). Otro autor a considerar es Rom Harré con sus análisis sobre el concepto de modelo y su distinción entre modelos micromorfos-"La más familiarclase de mode­ lo es el modelo a escala, donde una exacta copia de algo es hecha, pero de un reduci­ do tamaño" (Harré1965, p. 86)-y modelos paramorfos -"en los cualeslos procesos pueden ser representados en algún sistema análogo" (Harré 1965, p. 87). Desde el lado de los científicos mismos, se escucha la voz de Peter Medawar, Premio Nobel 1960, por sus trabajossobre el trasplantede los tejidos: "Hoy pensa­ mos que el elemento imaginativo es una de las mayores glorias de la ciencia" (Medawar 1997, p. 39). Además, a los ojos de Medawar, la interpretación meramente lógica de la ciencia es insuficiente, porque no da cuenta del origen de las hipótesis: "La debili­ dad del sistema lógico-deductivo, en la medida que pretenda ofrecer una exposición completa del proceso científico, estriba en que niega tener capacidad alguna para explicar el nacimiento de las hipótesis" (Medawar1997, p. 49). Paradecirlo en tér­ minos de Reichenbach, el contexto de justificación ha de ser complementado con el contexto de descubrimiento. Una inicialreflexión es la de Max Black en Models and Metaphors. Studies in Language and Philosophy (Black 1962), especialmente en el capítulo "Models and Archetypes", el cual finalizaasí con esta excelente síntesis: "Si yo he enfatizadotanto la importancia de los modelos y arquetiposcientíficos, es debido a una convicción de que los aspectos imaginativos del pensamiento científicohan sido en el pasado dema­ siado descuidados. Porque la ciencia, como las humanidades, como la literaturaes un asunto de imaginación" (Black 1962, p. 243). Otra contribución en este debate es la obra de Mary Hesse. Su Models and Analogies de 1963 es completada en 1980 con Revolutions and Reconstructions in the Philosophy of Science. En esta versión ma­ dura expone "The explanatory Function of Metaphor" (Hesse 1980, cap. II). Mary Hesse sostiene lo siguiente: "La tesis de este ensayo es que el modelo deductivo de explicación científica debería ser modificado y complementado por una perspectiva de explicación teórica como redescripción metafórica del explanandum (Hesse 1980, p. 111). En este sentido, su posición continúa la iniciada por Max Black y su "interaction view", dándole a la metáfora una funciónheurística: "Es aún desafortu­ nadamente necesario argüir que la metáfora es más que un dispositivo literario y decorativo, y que tiene implicaciones cognitivas cuya naturalezaes un tópico propio de implicaciones filosóficas" (Hesse 1980, p. 111). Sin embargo, uno de los princi­ pales problemas para la perspectiva de interacción en su aplicación a la explicación científica es la cuestión de cuál es el referente de un modelo o de una metáfora.

    Can science advance effectively through philosophical criticism and reflection? ROBERTO TORRETTI Universidad de Puerto Rico ABSTRACT Prompted by Hasok Chang’s conception of the history and philosophy of science (HPS) as the continuation of science by other means, I examine the possibility of obtaining scientific knowledge through philosophical criticism and reflection, in the light of four historical cases, concerning (i) the role of absolute space in Newtonian dynamics, (ii) the purported contraction of rods and retardation of clocks in Special Relativity, (iii) the reality of the electromagnetic ether, and (iv) the so-called problem of time’s arrow. In all four cases it is clear that a better understanding of such matters can be achieved —and has been achieved— through conceptual analysis. On the other hand, however, it would seem that this kind of advance has more to do with philosophical questions in science than with narrowly scientific questions. Hence, if HPS in effect continues the work of science by other means, it could well be doing it for other ends than those that working scientists ordinarily have in mind. The first section motivates this move, especially from the standpoint of the philosophy of science. The second section presents the notion of operational coherence as the key to understanding how knowledge resides in activities. The third section presents a proposal for making sense of truth on the basis of operational coherence. The final section briefly re- considers the relation between knowledge-as-ability and knowledge-as- information. 1. Knowledge beyond propositions The overall direction of this paper is to move beyond the propositional conception of knowledge. What I mean by that phrase is the widespread notion that knowledge (or at least the kind of knowledge that deserves the attention of epistemologists) consists in possessing the right sort of belief in the right sort of propositions.2 Without denying the importance of propositional knowledge, I want to pay attention to other aspects of what we commonly call knowledge, which cannot comfortably be fitted into a propositional framework. At the core of Torrietti’s view is a rejection of the notion that the truth of scientific theories consists in their correspondence to the world. I propose to understand correspondence in that sense as a metaphorical notion. I articulate a notion of pragmatist coherence, on the basis of which I make new coherence theories of truth and reality. Then it becomes possible to say that pragmatic realism consists in the pursuit of true knowledge of reality, in a way that is also consonant with Torretti’s pluralism.     A re-interpretation of the concept of mass and of the relativistic mass-energy relation 1 Stefano Re Fiorentin Summary . For over a century the definitions of mass and derivations of its relation with energy continue to be elaborated, demonstrating that the concept of mass is still not satisfactorily understood. The aim of this study is to show that, starting from the properties of Minkowski spacetime and from the principle of least action, energy expresses the property of inertia of a body. This implies that inertial mass can only be the object of a definition – the so called mass-energy relation - aimed at measuring energy in different units, more suitable to describe the huge amount of it enclosed in what we call the “rest-energy” of a body. Likewise, the concept of gravitational mass becomes unnecessary, being replaceable by energy, thus making the weak equivalence principle intrinsically verified. In dealing with mass, a new unit of measurement is foretold for it, which relies on the de Broglie frequency of atoms, the value of which can today be measured with an accuracy of a few parts in 10 9.     IS GEOMETRY ANALYTIC? MGHANGA DAVID MWAKIMA 1. INTRODUCTION In the fourth chapter of Language, Truth and Logic, Ayer undertakes the task of showing how a priori knowledge of mathematics and logic is possible. In doing so, he argues that only if we understand mathematics and logic as analytic,1 by which he memorably meant “devoid of factual content”2, do we have a justified account of 3 a priori knowledgeδιανοια of these disciplines. In this chapter, it is not clear whether Ayer gives an argument per se for the analyticity of mathematics and logic. For when one reads that chapter, one sees that Ayer is mainly criticizing the views held by Kant and Mill with respect to arithmetic.4 Nevertheless, I believe that the positive argument is present. Ayer’s discussion of geometry5 in this chapter shows that it is this discussion which constitutes his positive argument for the thesis that analytic sentences are true 1 Now, I am aware that ‘analytic’ was understood differently by Kant, Carnap, Ayer, Quine, and Putnam. It is not even clear whether there is even an agreed definition of ‘analytic’ today. For the purposes of my paper, the meaning of ‘analytic’ is Carnap’s sense as described in: Michael, Friedman, Reconsidering Logical Positivism (New York: Cambridge University Press, 1999), in terms of the relativized a priori. 2 Alfred Jules, Ayer, Language, Truth and Logic (New York: Dover Publications, 1952), p. 79, 87.     Tarski’s Intuitive Notion of Set Francisco Rodríguez-Consuegra Abstract. Tarski did research on set theory and also used set theory in many of his emblematic writings. Yet his notion of set from the philosophical viewpoint was almost unknown. By studying mostly the posthumously published evidence, his still unpub- lished materials, and the testimonies of some of his collaborators, I try to offer here a first, global picture of that intuitive notion, together with a philosophical interpretation of it. This is made by using several notions of universal languages as framework, and by taking into consideration the evolution of Tarski’s thoughts about set theory and its relationship with logic and mathematics. As a result, his difficulties to reconcile nomi- nalism and methodological Platonism are precisely located, described and much better understood. “I represent this very rude kind of anti-Platonism, one thing which I could describe as materialism, or nominalism with some materialistic taint, and it is very difficult for a man to live his whole life with this philosophical attitude, especially if he is a mathematician, especially if for some reasons he has a hobby which is called set theory, and worse –very difficult” (Tarski, Chicago, 1965) Tarski made important contributions to set theory, especially in the first years of his long and highly productive career. Also, it is usually accepted that set theory was the main instrument used by Tarski in his most significant contributions which had philosophical implications and presuppositions. In this connection we may mention the four definitions which are usually cited as supplying some sort of “conceptual analysis”, both methodologically (the first one) and from the point of view of the results obtained (the rest): (i) definable sets of real numbers; (ii) truth; (iii) logical consequence and (iv) logical notions.

Mathematical theories do not líe ready in a Platonic smorgasbord for the physicist to choose the one that suits him bes t. As is well known, so me of the greatest mathem­ atical ideas were born in the struggle for a better intellectual grasp of physical phenomena. The MT of a PTis laboriously developed in the flickering light of the Wit is meant to apprehend. However, in order to understand the workings of a PT, we must, for definiteness, fix one of the three factors and show how the other two are shaped with respect to it. The MT is the only likely candidate for this role. Hart Frontmatter More Information The Evolution of Logic The Evolution of Logic examines the relations between logic and philosophy over the last 150 years. Logic underwent a major renaissance beginning in the nineteenth century. Cantor almost tamed the infi nite, and Frege aimed to undercut Kant by reducing mathematics to logic. These achievements were threatened by the paradoxes, like Russell’s. This ferment generated excellent philosophy (and mathematics) by excellent philosophers (and mathematicians) up to World War II. This book provides a selective, criti- cal history of the collaboration between logic and philosophy during this period. After World War II, mathematical logic became a recognized subdisci- pline in mathematics departments, and consequently but unfortunately philosophers have lost touch with its monuments. This book aims to make four of them (consistency and independence of the continuum hypothesis, Post’s problem, and Morley’s theorem) more accessible to philosophers, making available the tools necessary for modern scholars of philosophy to renew a productive dialogue between logic and philosophy. W. D. Hart is currently Professor of Philosophy at the University of Illinois at Chicago, where he chaired the philosophy department for twelve years. He has also taught at the University of Michigan, University College London, and the University of New Mexico.
