THE GOLDEN GATE BLUES SOCIETY NEWSLETTER Issue 6, July 2010 GOLDEN GATE GROOVES FROM THE EDITOR Deb Lubin The period since the last newsletter was published was very busy, with planning for upcoming blues society events, going out to hear our favorite local blues bands, and our annual pilgrimage to Memphis in May for the Blues Music Awards. The BMAs are a wonderful event that all blues lovers should attend at least once. This year in Memphis, we got to see many of our favorite musicians from the Bay Area, among them Rick Estrin and the Nightcats, including Kid Andersen; the entire Tommy Castro Band, which took home several awards; Laura Chavez and Kennan Shaw from Candye Kane's band; Maria Muldaur, and others with Bay Area ties. I had so much fun reconnecting with old friends both on and off the stage. Meanwhile, the GGBS is rolling. We're getting ready for several big events that we're either sponsoring, partnering with, or supporting, including the 5th annual Redwood City Blues Festival in July, the first U.S. events of the European-based charity United by Music , the San Jose Jazz Festival in August, and events to select a member band to compete in the Blues Foundation's International Blues Challenge (IBC) in Memphis in February 2011, among others. Please look for information about all of these events in this issue of the newsletter. In addition, East Bay musician/cat lover/pre-war blues specialist Joel Fritz reviews four CDs by local bands. A similar eclecticism and scope also surfaced in his solo work, which couched his charmingly gravelly voice in a rustic yet rich swamp pop fusion of country, blues, and gospel. Born Claude Russell Bridges on April 2, 1942, in Lawton, Oklahoma, he began studying classical piano at age three, a decade later adopting the trumpet and forming his first band. At 14, Russell lied about his age to land a gig at a Tulsa nightclub, playing behind Ronnie Hawkins & the Hawks before touring in support of Jerry Lee Lewis. Two years later, he settled in Los Angeles, studying guitar under the legendary James Burton and appearing on sessions with Dorsey Burnette and Glen Campbell. As a member of Spector’s renowned studio group, Russell played on many of the finest pop singles of the ’60s, also arranging classics like Ike & Tina Turner’s monumental “River Deep, Mountain High”; other hits bearing his input include the Byrds’ “Mr. Tambourine Man,” Gary Lewis & the Playboys’ “This Diamond Ring,” and Herb Alpert’s “A Taste of Honey.” In 1967, Russell built his own recording studio, teaming with guitarist Marc Benno to record the acclaimed Look Inside the Asylum Choir LP. -

Er spielt fast 200 Gigs im Jahr und mit fast jedermann aus der Topliga des Musikerzirkels. Auch mit Bob Dylan auf dessen „Time Out Of Mind“. Er gründete die legendären Roomful of Blues, die mit Big Joe Turner und Eddie Cleanhead Vinson auf Tour gingen. Egal ob Jazz, Rock, Funk, 50er-Jahre-Chicago-Blues oder Slowblues: Robillard ist unbestritten einer der handwerklich fähigsten Gitarristen der Gegenwart und nun zum ersten Mal in Roth zu erleben. 1948 als Michael Robillard in Rhode Island geboren, zog es den jungen Gitarristen schon früh ins Musikgeschäft. 1967 gründete er mit dem Pianisten Al Copley die erfolgreiche R&B-Combo Roomful of Blues. Nach dreizehn Jahren überließ er seinen Platz dort Ronnie Earl , um Leadgitarrist für Robert Gordon zu werden. Danach war er kurzzeitig Mitglied der Legendary Blues Band . 1981 gründete er die Duke Robillard Band, die sich bald in Duke Robillard & The Pleasure Kings umbenannte. Nachdem die Band 1984 einen Plattenvertrag bei Rounder Records bekam, veröffentlichte sie eine Reihe von Alben und trennte sich 1990 wieder. Im selben Jahr ersetzte Robillard Jimmie Vaughan bei den Fabulous Thunderbirds . Bob Dylan, Jay McShann, Jimmy Witherspoon nahmen Robillards Gitarrenkünste im Studio und auf der Bühne in Anspruch. Seit Mitte der 90er- Jahre ist Robillard vor allem als Solokünstler mit seiner eigenen Band auf Tour und hat über dreißig Platten veröffentlicht, darunter Blueswerke wie „Blues For Modern Man“ (1999) oder „Blue Mood“ (2004). -

Having played the instru- ment for, then, almost two decades, I thought that a novelist would not, could not, feature specialty instruments such as the C-melody sax if he did not play the horn himself. Once the saxophone had caught my attention, I noticed all sorts of uncommon references that seemed to confirm my hunch that Thomas Pynchon himself played the instrument: McClintic Sphere’s 4½ reed, the contra- bass sax of Against the Day, Gravity’s Rainbow’s Charlie Parker passage. -
