PAUL TAFFOLLA, JR’S 964 WINS SOUTH CALIFORNIA DEAF BOWLERS CLASSIC NORWALK — Finally a low average bowler wins the 52nd annual Southern California Deaf Classic held at Keystone Lanes. This Classic had been dominated in the past by higher average bowlers and lower average bowlers only try to place in the money.

The rainy weather had dampened the entries down to only 22 entrants. One of the absentees Paul Taffolla a long time member of So. Calif. Deaf Traveling League should be there watching his son Paul Jr. bowl amazing 4 games in his first deaf Classic.

On the 4:00 PM last squad, carrying a 153 average from So. Calif. Deaf Traveling League, Paul Taffolla Jr. rolled far more that 30 pins over his average in each of his 4 games. They were at a steady clip 196-185-200-187 for 768 total plus his 196 handicap winning total of 964. Because of low entries the first place prize was $220.

Darrell Stogryn who last November rolled a 300 and 802 series in his Tucson league, came to bowl in this Classic with zero handicap. On the first squad at Noon Stogryn shot all 200s four games with a 256 high for 905 for the early lead.

Then on the 2:00 PM squad Ed Abakumoff started with a split in first frame and ran 8 strikes in row and ended with a split in 10th frame for a 247. Abakumoff finished 4 games with a 848. Stogryn reentered on 2:oo PM squad and rolled a 278 but ended with a 856 for 4 games. WP Stogryn’s leading 905 fell to 4th place at end of 4 PM squad when Taffolla Jr’s winning 964 and two others, Jeff Stansell and Mark Fisser placed 2nd and 3rd respectively. Stansell scored 914 with handicap and Fisser beat Stogryn’s 905 for the high scratch series with his 909 plus 4 handicap Western Pacific913. Bowling Supply, Inc. Defending champion Daniel Vasquez placed 5th with handicap total of 868 and his wife, Jennifer who placed second last year, got $25.00 as the lone woman entrant bowling on the 4 pm squad. Abakumoff’s 848 placed him 6th and last place to cash.

Stogryn’s 278 gave him the high scratch game with Fisser’s 256 came in 2nd.

So. Calif. Deaf Bowlers thanks all entrants for their support and bowling and hopes to have better weather and support for it’s 53rd Classic next year. DEAF TRAVEL BOWLS AT KEYSTONE LANES AT 1 PM SUNDAY JAN. 18
