JUDGE REPORT SOUTH-WEST BRITISH SHORTHAIR CAT CLUB 28/09/2019 JANET GREEN (FIFe Int) SOUTH-WEST BRITISH SHORTHAIR CAT CLUB 8th Championship Show held September 28th 2019 at Taunton Judge Report: Janet Green (FIFe International Judge) It was a great pleasure to judge for this friendly club and my thanks go to Show Managers, Bruce and Monica Acton, Secretary Lesley Tricker and Chairman Susan Newman for the kind invitation. Thank you also for the gift - a lasting memento. It was a rare visit for me to the South West and as is my habit at every show to “try to see something you can’t see in the show hall” I was rewarded with a brief opportunity to visit “The County” one of Taunton’s historic buildings - a onetime magnificent hotel, cinema and venue for legendary pop groups - now a glorious Waterstones bookshop with, incidentally, a good selection of cat related items. Wellsprings Leisure Centre is a most pleasant venue with good facilities and though lighting was generally good it was unfortunately rather poor for viewing the Pets and the BIS pens. Something was up with the BSH exhibits as several were not at ease as if a wave of agitation had surfed along a whole row!? I was pleased with the general level of presentation and there were some outstanding examples of British-ness. Long may it reign! Congratulations to CHUPAVI CLYDES BONNIE LASS a lilac tortie Best Kitten; GR CH BOUCLES MONSIEUR INCROYABLE a fab Selkirk Rex Best Adult, and the wonderful Brown Spottie Neuter IGR CH & I GR PR WELLMAR BALTI the epitome of a British Shorthair and my Overall Best in Show. BREED CLASSES SECTION 3 - BRITISH, MANX, SELKIRK REX & CHARTREUX ADULTS IMPERIAL CLASS 3 - AV SECTION 3 GR CH ADULT MALE Three super Grand Champion males not yet fully matured so still needing time for refinement Imperial Grand Challenge Certificate awarded to GR CH TOMMY OF PERLA POLUDNIA, (BSH e), M. 16.07.2018 owned by Mrs R Keyes. The youngest in the class at only just over a year old but 1 JUDGE REPORT SOUTH-WEST BRITISH SHORTHAIR CAT CLUB 28/09/2019 JANET GREEN (FIFe Int) showing remarkable physical development and harmony which earned him the certificate. A Polish import and a real heavy weight. So well-muscled, very solid and substantial from continental lines. He has a typically round British head still to fill out with a correct Brit profile showing a break, good bite, good top and small-medium rounded. well set ears. He has a very appealing facial expression with large round eyes of a promising orange shade. He has a few slight coat issues associated with youth and seasonality, a few vestigial markings but it’s of good density and is short with a degree of variable crispness. The colour appeared a medium and warm shade of cream. He was well groomed and presented well in his pen. He has a good temperament and is conducive to handling and I am sure he will go the distance. Reserve Imperial Grand Challenge Certificate awarded to GR CH REVODNA FOR YOUR EYES ONLY, (BSH a 03), M. 16.09.2017 owned by Mrs E A Blagdon. My heart went to this handsome and attractive bi-coloured boy. At two years of age he still has much maturing to do. He’s a really big boy with good bone and a large frame. Well shown in his double pen. His head type is excellent; large and round, just needing to fill out a bit but with a correct British side profile with a break and a broad top of head, good bite, round, orange eyes and a very alert expression.. Ears are medium sized and well placed. He is still a bit long in the body and limbs but with added maturity and some pumping up he will be super. This is something you simply cannot rush. His coat is of fair density showing some breakage but is a bit soft and less dense in places no doubt due to seasonal change. Blue coat colour is fairly sound considering the time of year but varies in tone being lighter on the head and darker on the tail. Pattern is demanding in the BSH and this cat does well. He has a good visual balance of clean white to colour falling into the one third to one half white with an inverted V white blaze on the face, white muzzle, white chest, white on the legs and an almost complete white collar. Colour/pattern commands points for consideration and he is excellent in both. Pattern delineation is good but will be even better with increased density of a winter jacket. He has a delightful personality and was well presented. 2 JUDGE REPORT SOUTH-WEST BRITISH SHORTHAIR CAT CLUB 28/09/2019 JANET GREEN (FIFe Int) Also considered GR CH BOUCLES MONSIEUR INCROYABLE (TICA LA BW SGC), (SRL n 23), M. 29.06.2017 owned and bred by Miss S L Walker. Yet another worthy Grand Champion. It was very close between him and the BSH for the Reserve. Overall morphology complies with the standard, rectangular body shape, well-muscled and sturdy. Impressive head type with angular muzzle, good bite, round expressive eyes and typical side profile. Certainly has the coat to flaunt though it was a touch seasonal and harsh in places. Good uniformity of length. Extremely well tousled with waves and so very tactile! No points for colour or pattern in this breed but a pleasant brown mactabby. Expertly presented by someone with a well experienced hand. Lovely cat to handle. Very easy going obviously well travelled. Later Best Adult in Show. Congratulations. IMPERIAL CLASS 3 - AV SECTION 3 GR CH ADULT FEMALE Imperial Grand Challenge Certificate awarded to GR CH LAMBLIKE MOONWALK, (SRL f), F. 08.06.2018 owned by Mrs P Tegg. Stood out due to her very pleasing attitude and facial expression and typical Selkirk “look”. She has a well-rounded head, correct side profile and muzzle with good bite. Ears are well set, not too large, eyes decidedly round and expressive. Face decorated with a super network of the cutest whiskers! She has excellent conformation and body type, rectangular in proportions, strong and muscular yet still feminine with limbs and tail proportionate to body length. The mid long coat though well waved is understandably still a bit seasonal waiting to thicken up and as a result could have a bit more volume and be a little more tousled. The black tortoiseshell colours and pattern which are well distributed highlight the attractiveness of the waved look. Super in temperament a pleasure to handle and well presented. BRITISH SH BLACK ADULT Best of Breed awarded to CH XZIBIT BEAR HUG, (BSH n), M. 23.02.2018 owned by Mrs A McEntee. One of many today who was not a happy chappy – not him I am sure but affected by something in the neighbourhood. An impressive exhibit, large and well grown with a substantial build. I liked his overall look very much and in particular his facial expression which reminded me of 3 JUDGE REPORT SOUTH-WEST BRITISH SHORTHAIR CAT CLUB 28/09/2019 JANET GREEN (FIFe Int) his famous father. He has a large, round head with strength to the muzzle, cheeks still developing, an excellent Brit profile with short straight nose and a good bite. I would prefer his eyes to be deeper in colour. He has a really good top of head and well set medium sized ears. He still has maturing to do and he appeared a bit long in the body, with proportionate length to the limbs and the well- shaped tail. He has bags of time to pump up and will I am sure look truly spectacular when matured. Pity we can’t press the fast forward button to see him in a couple of years’ time! Coat-wise he appeared a bit seasonal being a bit soft and a bit unsound with a fair density. The great thing is he has good blackness without any rustiness of any sort. A well-presented cat who looked well in his double pen. Quality breeding. A cat of true Britishness and potential. BRITISH SH BLUE ADULT MALE 1st Open awarded to JOANDTO MERLIN, (BSH a), M. 14.04.2018 owned by Miss H Miller & Miss T Bullen. This cat has quite a lot going for him in terms of his general conformation and basic type. However the long and short of it is – this cat is simply “not ready for the show bench”. A phrase often used by judges years ago when there were less shows and a true show season limited to eight months of the year. He has a fairly typical head, needing to fill out in the cheeks and muzzle to give more roundness, the muzzle is rather too pronounced which makes his side profile exhibit a nose break which looks a bit too deep. On the plus side he has round light orange eyes and medium sized ears. His bite appeared ok. The body is well proportioned but needs a bit more size which can come with more maturity. My main issue was with this cat’s coat – my reason for withholding the certificate. At a FIFe show where the cat is presented by the exhibitor at the judges table I would be able to talk this through privately with the owner. Instead I have to write it here. The coat was too soft, had a lot of loose hair, lacked density, had a lot of markings and was a peculiar colour.
