JUDGE REPORT SOUTH-WEST CLUB 28/09/2019 JANET GREEN (FIFe Int)

SOUTH-WEST BRITISH SHORTHAIR CAT CLUB 8th Championship Show held September 28th 2019 at Taunton Judge Report: Janet Green (FIFe International Judge)

It was a great pleasure to judge for this friendly club and my thanks go to Show Managers, Bruce and Monica Acton, Secretary Lesley Tricker and Chairman Susan Newman for the kind invitation. Thank you also for the gift - a lasting memento. It was a rare visit for me to the South West and as is my habit at every show to “try to see something you can’t see in the show hall” I was rewarded with a brief opportunity to visit “The County” one of Taunton’s historic buildings - a onetime magnificent hotel, cinema and venue for legendary pop groups - now a glorious Waterstones bookshop with, incidentally, a good selection of cat related items. Wellsprings Leisure Centre is a most pleasant venue with good facilities and though lighting was generally good it was unfortunately rather poor for viewing the Pets and the BIS pens. Something was up with the BSH exhibits as several were not at ease as if a wave of agitation had surfed along a whole row!? I was pleased with the general level of presentation and there were some outstanding examples of British-ness. Long may it reign! Congratulations to CHUPAVI CLYDES BONNIE LASS a lilac tortie Best ; GR CH BOUCLES MONSIEUR INCROYABLE a fab Best Adult, and the wonderful Brown Spottie Neuter IGR CH & I GR PR WELLMAR BALTI the epitome of a British Shorthair and my Overall Best in Show.

The youngest in the class at only just over a year old but

1

JUDGE REPORT SOUTH-WEST BRITISH SHORTHAIR CAT CLUB 28/09/2019 JANET GREEN (FIFe Int) showing remarkable physical development and harmony which earned him the certificate. A Polish import and a real heavy weight. So well-muscled, very solid and substantial from continental lines. He has a typically round British head still to fill out with a correct Brit profile showing a break, good bite, good top and small-medium rounded. well set ears. He has a very appealing facial expression with large round eyes of a promising orange shade. He has a few slight coat issues associated with youth and seasonality, a few vestigial markings but it’s of good density and is short with a degree of variable crispness. The colour appeared a medium and warm shade of cream. He was well groomed and presented well in his pen. He has a good temperament and is conducive to handling and I am sure he will go the distance. Reserve Imperial Grand Challenge Certificate awarded to GR CH REVODNA FOR YOUR EYES ONLY, (BSH a 03), M. 16.09.2017 owned by Mrs E A Blagdon. My heart went to this handsome and attractive bi-coloured boy. At two years of age he still has much maturing to do. He’s a really big boy with good bone and a large frame. Well shown in his double pen. His head type is excellent; large and round, just needing to fill out a bit but with a correct British side profile with a break and a broad top of head, good bite, round, orange eyes and a very alert expression.. Ears are medium sized and well placed. He is still a bit long in the body and limbs but with added maturity and some pumping up he will be super. This is something you simply cannot rush. His coat is of fair density showing some breakage but is a bit soft and less dense in places no doubt due to seasonal change. Blue coat colour is fairly sound considering the time of year but varies in tone being lighter on the head and darker on the tail. Pattern is demanding in the BSH and this cat does well. He has a good visual balance of clean white to colour falling into the one third to one half white with an inverted V white blaze on the face, white muzzle, white chest, white on the legs and an almost complete white collar. Colour/pattern commands points for consideration and he is excellent in both. Pattern delineation is good but will be even better with increased density of a winter jacket. He has a delightful personality and was well presented.

Also considered GR CH BOUCLES MONSIEUR INCROYABLE (TICA LA BW SGC), (SRL n 23), M. 29.06.2017 owned and bred by Miss S L Walker. Yet another worthy Grand Champion. It was very close between him and the BSH for the Reserve. Overall morphology complies with the standard, rectangular body shape, well-muscled and sturdy. Impressive head type with angular muzzle, good bite, round expressive eyes and typical side profile. Certainly has the coat to flaunt though it was a touch seasonal and harsh in places. Good uniformity of length. Extremely well tousled with waves and so very tactile! No points for colour or pattern in this breed but a pleasant brown mactabby. Expertly presented by someone with a well experienced hand. Lovely cat to handle. Very easy going obviously well travelled. Later Best Adult in Show. Congratulations. IMPERIAL CLASS 3 - AV SECTION 3 GR CH ADULT FEMALE Imperial Grand Challenge Certificate awarded to GR CH LAMBLIKE MOONWALK, (SRL f), F. 08.06.2018 owned by Mrs P Tegg. Stood out due to her very pleasing attitude and facial expression and typical Selkirk “look”. She has a well-rounded head, correct side profile and muzzle with good bite. Ears are well set, not too large, eyes decidedly round and expressive. Face decorated with a super network of the cutest whiskers! She has excellent conformation and body type, rectangular in proportions, strong and muscular yet still feminine with limbs and tail proportionate to body length. The mid long coat though well waved is understandably still a bit seasonal waiting to thicken up and as a result could have a bit more volume and be a little more tousled. The black tortoiseshell colours and pattern which are well distributed highlight the attractiveness of the waved look. Super in temperament a pleasure to handle and well presented. BRITISH SH BLACK ADULT Best of Breed awarded to CH XZIBIT BEAR HUG, (BSH n), M. 23.02.2018 owned by Mrs A McEntee. One of many today who was not a happy chappy – not him I am sure but affected by something in the neighbourhood. An impressive exhibit, large and well grown with a substantial build. I liked his overall look very much and in particular his facial expression which reminded me of

3

JUDGE REPORT SOUTH-WEST BRITISH SHORTHAIR CAT CLUB 28/09/2019 JANET GREEN (FIFe Int) his famous father. He has a large, round head with strength to the muzzle, cheeks still developing, an excellent Brit profile with short straight nose and a good bite. I would prefer his eyes to be deeper in colour. He has a really good top of head and well set medium sized ears. He still has maturing to do and he appeared a bit long in the body, with proportionate length to the limbs and the well- shaped tail. He has bags of time to pump up and will I am sure look truly spectacular when matured. Pity we can’t press the fast forward button to see him in a couple of years’ time! Coat-wise he appeared a bit seasonal being a bit soft and a bit unsound with a fair density. The great thing is he has good blackness without any rustiness of any sort. A well-presented cat who looked well in his double pen. Quality breeding. A cat of true Britishness and potential. BRITISH SH BLUE ADULT MALE 1st Open awarded to JOANDTO MERLIN, (BSH a), M. 14.04.2018 owned by Miss H Miller & Miss T Bullen. This cat has quite a lot going for him in terms of his general conformation and basic type. However the long and short of it is – this cat is simply “not ready for the show bench”. A phrase often used by judges years ago when there were less shows and a true show season limited to eight months of the year. He has a fairly typical head, needing to fill out in the cheeks and muzzle to give more roundness, the muzzle is rather too pronounced which makes his side profile exhibit a nose break which looks a bit too deep. On the plus side he has round light orange eyes and medium sized ears. His bite appeared ok. The body is well proportioned but needs a bit more size which can come with more maturity. My main issue was with this cat’s coat – my reason for withholding the certificate. At a FIFe show where the cat is presented by the exhibitor at the judges table I would be able to talk this through privately with the owner. Instead I have to write it here. The coat was too soft, had a lot of loose hair, lacked density, had a lot of markings and was a peculiar colour. There are many possible reasons for this – environmental, the breeding line, coat treatment. Most probably the latter. But it could be a combination, or even all three. I would advise keeping this cat off

4

JUDGE REPORT SOUTH-WEST BRITISH SHORTHAIR CAT CLUB 28/09/2019 JANET GREEN (FIFe Int) the show bench for a while until he has a British coat and more maturity. Otherwise a pleasant character and easy to handle.

BRITISH SH BLUE ADULT FEMALE 1st Open, Challenge Certificate & Best of Breed awarded to REVODNA LOVING MEMORIES, (BSH a), F. 05.10.2018 owned and bred by Miss D Warnes. A clear winner for the BOB this lovely lass of just 11 months shows great harmony of development. She has excellent British head type, large and rounded, a short, broad, straight nose, correct Brit profile, and a good level bite. Her forehead is rounded and her ears while of good shape are held a bit high and a bit close. This, however, is entirely consistent with her development at this age. She is super bodied, short in the body and legs with a well-shaped tail to balance. Her coat is developing good texture and density (more to come) and is a pleasing shade of blue. Just a hint unsound with slight ghost marks on the body and ghost rings on the tail. She was upset by the rantings of her neighbours and did well to keep her cool. Well presented by Miss Warnes. The classiest of the Blues at the show. Also considered for Best of Breed CH PETERJEANNE MY TOM HARDY, (BSH a), M. 23.10.2017 owned by Miss A Russell. Not one of his best performances! as he was not (like several others) in the mood today! He has a rounded head with correct Brit side profile and nose break. Bite not available for viewing. Ears a little large. He has excellent orange eye colour though he had a tendency to half close his eyes which detracted from the eye shape. I would prefer a more wide awake look. His body could be more substantial which will come with more maturity. He is still under two years of age. He has an attractive blue coat colour on the light side of medium and this is excellent for density depth and texture. However this is marred by silvering and tipping. Well-presented but unfortunately not easy to fully assess. BRITISH SH CREAM ADULT Best of Breed awarded to GR CH TOMMY OF PERLA POLUDNIA, (BSH e), M. 16.07.2018 owned by Mrs R Keyes. SECTION 3 - BRITISH, MANX, SELKIRK REX & CHARTREUX BRITISH SH CREAM KITTEN 1st Open & Best of Breed awarded to SHEEPHOUSE OVER THEMOON, (BSH e), M. 14.03.2019. owned by Mrs M E Gains. Beautiful cream boy kitten now entering his junior phase so his characteristics entirely consistent with his age. He has strong muscles, solid bone with a good frame and a good weight. Head is developing well, with some roundness, cheeks yet to develop, excellent short, broad nose with correct Brit profile and a level bite. He has super coloured eyes promising to be deep orange! He is entering the leggy stage and just a bit long in the body at the moment and the tail though well shaped is also a bit long but proportionate to body length. He has well shaped ears with rounded tips which are well set with breadth between and are well furnished. Still with a touch soft kitten coat the texture is coming in and is a light medium shade of coolish cream, fairly uniform throughout but with darker ghost markings on body, legs and tail. A sweet, slightly bewildered, kitten who was still wondering what all this was about when I left him. A pleasure to handle. Well presented and with show potential. BRITISH SH AOC SPOTTED KITTEN1st Open & Best of Breed awarded to WELLMAR HERMIONE, (BSH a 24), F. 07.05.2019. owned and bred by Miss J Martin. I was immediately impressed by the harmony of this four month old kitten. She has good all round balance. Showing excellence in head shape, broad across the top, ears very well set for age, correct profile, width to muzzle and good bite. Eye colour is extremely promising already a deep colour. She really has a super quality coat for her age truly British. Just a few coat issues with ground colour lacking a bit of contrast and warmth as yet, but to come. Well patterned to standard but some linkage on the upper left torso. Excellent ringed tail with correct solid blue tip. Excellent in temperament. One of the best prepared exhibits. Best of Breed awarded to GR CH & IGR PR MOORMIST BAGPUSS, (BSH d), MN. 24.06.2016. owned by Miss D Wilderspin. A whopper of a cat, large and very weighty and one which could not be faulted in his morphology, conformation or physique. Typically British he is chunky though large, with a massive body, robust and well-muscled throughout and so well matured. He has sturdy legs, large round paws, breadth across the shoulders and rump, a thick neck and a proportionate tail thicker at the base and correctly round tip. His coat is short-medium in length and of super quality with a good density and crispness. His wonderful deep orange coat colour is only marred by the many markings, spots and rings. We all know this is the way it is and accept it. The red puzzle is well documented but the difficulty arises when an interested bystander asks the question why this lovely cat and the red kitten in the show are both red selfs when one has a lot of markings and the other doesn’t. We have to explain it by genetics to say both can be correct since neither is agouti. But it is not necessarily understood. Bagpuss is in outstanding condition and so well presented. He was a bit perturbed by the agitation of some neighbouring exhibits but conducted himself as always with perfect calm. My congratulations to his owner and breeder on his achievements. BRITISH SH BROWN SPOTTED NEUTER Best of Breed awarded to IGR CH & IGR PR WELLMAR BALTI, (BSH n 24), FN. 16.05.2009 owned by Mrs P H Absalom. Now in her 11th year this feline beauty continues her winning ways maintaining a high degree of excellence in all aspects of condition and technical merit. She is a tribute to the expertise of Patricia Absalom and Jill Martin both major contributors to the tabby British world. Balti has all the textbook attributes required by the breed standard. An epitome of British type. Particularly impressive is her coat which exhibits not only good spotted pattern with warmth of ground colour but also super quality of a short denseness designed by Nature to protect from winter snow and the maritime climate of Britain. Such density has slipped away over the recent decades as we have become tolerant in our acceptance of coats suited to the indoor thermostatically controlled environment. I enjoyed and

JUDGE REPORT SOUTH-WEST BRITISH SHORTHAIR CAT CLUB 28/09/2019 JANET GREEN (FIFe Int) appreciated the opportunity to handle this cat not once but twice and was delighted to select her as Overall Best in Show. BRITISH SH AC GOLDEN TIPPED NEUTER 1st Open, Premier Certificate & Best of Breed awarded to IGR CH ABALUKI BETCHA BY GOLLYWOW, (BSH ny 12), FN. 12.04.2016. owned and bred by Mrs M Coleman. This Black Golden Tipped girl has developed so well since I last saw her. Maturity can make such a difference in the British breed. She has a typical British head showing roundness, correct Brit side profile with nose break and neat medium sized ears set well on a broad head. Yet she is still feminine. Her body is well developed well-structured with excellent strength and muscle tone, good limbs and proportionate tail. Her coat is short with a degree of crispness still a touch soft in places but with a good density. This displays her colouring beautifully with black tipping and an apricot under colour. The tipping about one eighth of the hair length is very even throughout just a sprinkle more on the top of head and along the spine line. In super condition and very well groomed and presented. She whinged a bit as is her way but with the level of agitation among the she behaved impeccably. Now a neuter she looks really well, quite an outstanding exhibit and one which should make it to the top of the neuter classes.

Broad top of head with neat medium sized eras. Really pleasing development all round. Harmonious with compactness to body and thick, straight limbs. Super coat for texture and pattern, a bit seasonal needing a little more density to enhance ground colour though to be fair hall light

Head is good in all aspects of general type showing rounding to the lower face and muzzle. Correct side profile with break, nice short, straight nose, large eyes which are muddy in colour at present but bode to be super, and a perfect bite. Fair shortness to body matched by proportionate legs which are well muscled. Round paws, excellent tail for shape and length. She has a good coat quality with a promising texture. Colours are delicious, light lilac and cream well balanced and broken throughout the body and limbs. Lovely temperament, certainly a bonnie lass with show potential and very well presented. Later Best in Show Kitten. 2nd LEKATI HESTHEBEESKNEES, (BLH d 03), M. a pretty red and white longhaired Brit far too pretty for a male. Just old enough to be at the show. Good all round physique and body for age. Head is well balanced with excellent type, well rounded and good bite. Coat colour still to clear. Complies with the (alternative) LH pattern standard (a la carte instead of table d’hôte). Well prepared. Excels in coat quality with correct and very promising resilience. Well done breeder. Great show temperament, good show potential. 3rd TARIN VAN CATTERYLINUM, (BSH b 03), F. A scrummy kitten but what a spitfire! Clearly joining in the protest today! So very attractive and brought back memories for me. Good in head type and body conformation, bite was not available for inspection but nothing to suggest any untowardness. And jeepers where did you get those eyes? Large, round, and with a piercing stare! Soft coat suggestive of continental origin and a bit unsound. Well balanced colour/pattern of dark brown and white. Inverted V facial blaze, incomplete collar, white on legs and under, plus bit of white on back. Temptation on legs – but maybe too much too soon for this young Dutch kitty? Muzzle is a bit sharp – she needs to fill out and round up. Very promising quality coat, short and good texture. Very few ghost markings mainly at extremities. Body coat shows excellent clarity especially on the torso, appearing ticked based with continental influence. Well shown with a super temperament. Great potential. Awarded my Judges choice rosette for the colour achievement. 2nd JORDMIAN JIMINY CRICKET, (BSH a), M. A nicely grown Blue male of good type and conformation. Round head with good width, ears a little large at present. Good profile and bite. Well- proportioned body with strength to limbs. He has a really lovely coat which is short and the texture is developing. Light-medium tone of blue showing some silvering. Very nice in temperament and extremely well prepared. 3rd LEKATI HARRIET-LE-QUIN, (BSH d 02 62), F. Another red and white sweetie and litter mate to the BLH Bi-Colour. Also at her first show. Excellent in head type with a good bite and really beautiful strong eye colour developing. Feminine build A little long in the body at this early stage and tail a bit long. Strength to legs to develop. Baby softness to short coat. Rather a lot of white for a conventional harlequin with minimal patching, two orange patches on forehead. Some ghost rings in tail. Well presented, a friendly one. AC BRITISH, MANX, SELKIRK REX OR CHARTREUX LIMIT KITTEN 1st BARTONHOUSE MAGNIFICAT, (BSH a), F. HOUSEHOLD PETS - OLYMPIAN CLASSES

OLYMPIAN CLASS - AV HP IMPERIAL GRAND MASTER CAT MALE A super set of Imperial Grands entered – all worthy of Olympian certificates. The hall lighting was not so good in the pet section at the far end of the hall so judgement of colour was compromised. My method of pet judging for those interested is C>A>T> … Condition – physique, coat, presentation. Appeal – shape, size, coat type, colour, pattern. Temperament – personality, character. Condition for me is the most important factor of all. Olympian Certificate awarded to IGMC MYSTICAL CHARMER, (PPS n 24 - Brown Spotted Tabby Pedigree Shorthair), MN. 2 Years owned by Mrs B Judge. A big boy in prime condition, physically very strong with good musculature. His fur shone just like his nature. His short coat is very attractive with black/brown spotted pattern, endearing facial markings and expressive eyes. His sociable and interactive character got him the Olympian today. He really engaged with me both in conversation and play. Yes – we all need a cat to talk to. And he was so polite and easy to handle. Very well turned out by Mrs Judge, well presented pen. No doubt he will get the Olympian title. Later a well-deserved Best in Show Pedigree Pet - many Congratulations! Reserve Olympian Certificate awarded to OGIGMC BOB, (PPS n 31 Seal/Brown Pedigree Shorthair), MN. 11 Years owned by Mrs S L Miller. Ah Bob! What a pleasure to meet you again! This fantastic boy ran the winner so very close indeed. He is in such magnificent condition for 11 years old, solid, well built and gleaming with health and vitality. His fur coat is groomed and polished to the last hair by his proud owner. He purred with delight and was able to complete not one but several roll-overs (he ought to be on that TV advert!) before returning to his pen to roll some more. The lighting along the pets aisle was rather dim and I think Bob was disadvantaged somewhat by him being the only dark self-colour in the class it was difficult to appreciate the attractiveness of his coat -

But I still love you Bob. 3rd IGMC BJORN, (PPS – Cream Pedigree Shorthair), MN. 2 Years 4 months owned by Mrs S Alford. This is a super solid, well- covered guy with a strong body and a very good posture! The way a cat stands is never really appreciated in the judging arena because the cat is always either in a cage or handled. I got the impression Bjorn is a born poser. Very relaxed. Another cat in top notch condition and well turned out by the owner. He has a particularly kind expression and wide-awake large eyes. His short coat is very attractive in a luscious honey colour with facial highlights and polished to satin smooth perfection. A box who could easily win an Olympian. 4th UK OSIGMC TIGGER, (NPS d 22 03 - Ginger Tabby & White Non-Pedigree Shorthair), MN 7 Years 1 month owned by Mrs M Reed. This is a big bagpuss who took my breath away when I first saw him - I am known for my love of red cats. At seven years old Tigger is in peak condition, glowed with health and with a solid, muscular body. This is one cat with a very good kitchen at home! His coat was well groomed despite a very few loose hairs which is why he went 4th in this class today though this is down to the seasonal change. His coat pattern and colour is fabulous - one of my favourite combinations. He handled well (though heavily!). This is one big cat. He was relaxed and calm taking all in his stride. For him just another day at the office. Clearly a top cat and later chosen as Overall Best in Show Pet. Congratulations! SH AC KITTEN 1st Open & Best in Class awarded to SIR ROLY OF RIVERRUN, (SH - Seal Point & White Bicolour), MN. 6 Months. owned by Mr & Mrs J & H Brinsford. At only six months old this super kitten is developing well with a sound rectangular body structure, strong legs and firm muscles. His face is instantly attractive and is so pretty, almost too pretty for a boy. His rounded face sports an inverted white V on the muzzle just making a division above the nose above which is a dark brown mask from which his blue eyes peer out. He looks like a little Lone Ranger! His cream body fur was perfectly groomed. At his first show I guess and certainly one to catch the judges eyes. A potential winner. Full of character and well shown by Family Brinsford.

PETS MISCELLANEOUS CLASSES RESCUED ADULT OR KITTEN Wouldn’t it be nice to have some info about these cats? I always wonder what circumstance led to the cat’s rescue. Some have a very interesting tale to tell! A few years ago as a show organiser I asked owners in this class to supply one or two sentences about their rescue which was then passed on to the relevant judge and it proved very popular. 1st IGMC RUKI, (PPL - Brown Tabby), FN. 3 Years This one certainly fell on her feet to be adopted by this exhibitor. She wouldn’t stop chatting about it! Super condition. Already reported on. 2nd BLACK ORCHID, (PPS - Black & White), FN. 1Year 3 months Another lucky girl to be rescued, so very calm and cuddly, snuggled up in her bed, a picture of contentment. She looked so happy I could have cuddled up with her if the bed had been big enough. A fuzzy one in outstanding condition. Loved the colour/pattern!. ADULT OR KITTEN WITH LONGEST WHISKERS 1st GMC PIPPIN, (PPL - Chocolate Shaded Burmese Pointed), MN. 4 Years A remarkable display of whiskers by this delicious cat.

JUDGE REPORT SOUTH-WEST BRITISH SHORTHAIR CAT CLUB 28/09/2019 JANET GREEN (FIFe Int)

There were far too many to count but if all were measured from end to end the total length would surely cover from one side of the show hall to the other! 2nd IGMC BJORN, (PPS - Cream), MN. 2 Years 4 months Gleaming whiskers that showed up well in the hall’s limited light, not as prolific as Pippin’s and, Mmm…..a couple of them may have been a twitch longer than Pippin’s longest! Please don’t demand a re-count! 3rd GMC LAKH'A ECHO BLU, (PPS - Caramel Tabby Point), MN. 3 Years 3 months Another bewhiskered gent, very handsome and though not as plentiful as the other two in the class, these were the most talkative whiskers of all! ADULT OR KITTEN LIVING IN SOMERSET, DEVON OR CORNWALL (6 entries) The girls took all the prizes in this class 1st IGMC RUKI, (PPL - Brown Tabby), FN. 3 Years 2nd ZARA-BELLE, (PPS - Black Tortie), FN. 4 Years Most impressive of the torties. 3rd GMC LOTTIE, (PPS - Brown Tortie), FN. 13Years 7 months Just wonderful for her age. Extra special 3rd POLLY, (PPS - Chocolate Tortie), FN. 4 Years 11 months - in memory of my own Chocolate Tortie.
