Genomic Designation: New kinds of people at the intersection of genetics, medicine and social action Daniel Navon Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2013 © 2013 Daniel Navon All rights reserved ABSTRACT Genomic Designation: New kinds of people at the intersection of genetics, medicine and social action Daniel Navon Genetics can do more than predict, explain or help treat medical conditions – it can create new ones. The social sciences have assumed that genetics must work in and through existing categories of human difference in order to inform clinical practice or social mobilization. By contrast, I go beyond the specter of reductionism and examine the emergence of new kinds of people at the intersection of genetics research, clinical practice and social action. For over fifty years, conditions like the XXX, Edwards, Fragile X and 22q11.2 Deletion Syndromes have been discovered, delineated and diagnosed strictly according to abnormalities in the genome, even in the absence of phenotypic coherence – a practice which I call ‘genomic designation’. This dissertation uses comparative historical methods, fieldwork and citation analysis to examine the history of genomic designation, its variable impact on practice and its implications for our understanding of the biosciences, medicine and social mobilization. I argue that genomic designation represents an important and growing practice that extends and challenges existing formulations of key concepts like ‘biosociality’, geneticization and the rise of a ‘molecular gaze’ in contemporary medicine. Furthermore, I show how it offers an opportunity to develop a typology of ways in which genetics can radically reconfigure medical classification. -

Standard Making in Cytogenetics: the Manufacture, Circulation and Reproduction of Chromosome Images María Jesús Santesmases Instituto de Filosofía, Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), Madrid [email protected] Abstract: The first reliable pattern of the human chromosome set was manufactured between the late 1950s and early 1960s. This paper will account for the historical background of such reliability, of the production of a reference, an image, the schematic figure – the ideogram – that represented what would from then on be held in the minds of medical practitioners and laboratory scientists of human cytogenetics as the cytological identity of being human. Human genetics as a history of images and the skills of drawing, making photo(micro) graphs and diagrams, developed through a reference drawn on the basis of the consensus reached by a small group of early human cytogeneticists in Denver in 1960. Schemes and idealizations, as well as the fully realistic transposition of the contours and interiors of each chromosome, participated in the emergence of a particular, specific and enduring way of representing the tiny parts of the cell where division began, and accounting for both the forms and function of chromosomes at the origins of medical genetics. European Journal of Human Genetics (2017), 1–18 Official journal of The European Society of Human Genetics www.nature.com/ejhg ARTICLE Some pioneers of European human genetics Peter S Harper* Some of the pioneers of human genetics across Europe are described, based on a series of 100 recorded interviews made by the author. These interviews, and the memories of earlier workers in the field recalled by interviewees, provide a vivid picture, albeit incomplete, of the early years of human and medical genetics. From small beginnings in the immediate post-World War 2 years, human genetics grew rapidly across many European countries, a powerful factor being the development of human cytogenetics, stimulated by concerns over the risks of radiation exposure. Medical applications soon followed, with the recognition of human chromosome abnormalities, the need for genetic counselling, the possibility of prenatal diagnosis and later, the applications of human molecular genetics. The evolution of the field has been strongly influenced by the characters and interests of the relatively small number of founding workers in different European countries, as well as by wider social, medical and scientific factors in the individual countries.
