  • “And Maybe You Can Translate Also What I Say”: Interpreters in Football Press Conferences
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by OpenstarTs “And maybe you can translate also what I say”: interpreters in football press conferences Annalisa Sandrelli UNINT - University of International Studies of Rome (Italy) Abstract Today most professional football teams are multilingual; at the same time, the increasing media exposure of this sport has led to a growing number of press conferences involving players and coaches with limited proficiency in the language of the country where they play. As a result, there is a niche market for interpreters in professional football. This paper presents a case study based on a small corpus of press conferences organised for the offi- cial presentation of new players: its aim is to describe communication dynamics, common practices and pitfalls and to discuss interpreter roles in such settings. Introduction As a consequence of globalisation in sports, in recent years professional football has been characterised by the increasing mobility of players, referred to by Baines (2013: 207) as elite migrant athletes. The trend is especially marked in the main Eu- ropean football leagues, the so-called Big 5 (England, France, Germany, Italy and Spain), but also affects most European countries and some “new” football coun- tries, such as China, India, the United Arab Emirates, the US and Canada. A recent survey has revealed that in the 2013-2014 season 62.93% of footballers playing in the English Premier League were foreign nationals, followed by 54.56 % in the Italian Serie A, 41.45% in the German Bundesliga, 39.02% in the Spanish Liga and 32.34% in the French Ligue 1.

University of Nevada, Reno Sport, Nation, Gender: Basque Soccer Madness A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Basque Studies (Anthropology) by Mariann Vaczi Dr. Joseba Zulaika/Dissertation Advisor May, 2013 Copyright by Mariann Vaczi All Rights Reserved THE GRADUATE SCHOOL We recommend that the dissertation prepared under our supervision by Mariann Vaczi entitled Sport, Nation, Gender: Basque Soccer Madness be accepted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Joseba Zulaika, Advisor Sandra Ott, Committee Member Pello Salaburu, Committee Member Robert Winzeler, Committee Member Eleanor Nevins, Graduate School Representative Marsha H. Read, Ph. D., Dean, Graduate School May, 2013 i Abstract A centenarian Basque soccer club, Athletic Club (Bilbao) is the ethnographic locus of this dissertation. From a center of the Industrial Revolution, a major European port of capitalism and the birthplace of Basque nationalism and political violence, Bilbao turned into a post-Fordist paradigm of globalization and gentrification. Beyond traditional axes of identification that create social divisions, what unites Basques in Bizkaia province is a soccer team with a philosophy unique in the world of professional sports: Athletic only recruits local Basque players. Playing local becomes an important source of subjectivization and collective identity in one of the best soccer leagues (Spanish) of the most globalized game of the world. This dissertation takes soccer for a cultural performance that reveals relevant anthropological and sociological information about Bilbao, the province of Bizkaia, and the Basques. Early in the twentieth century, soccer was established as the hegemonic sports culture in Spain and in the Basque Country; it has become a multi- billion business, and it serves as a powerful political apparatus and symbolic capital.

  • Deconstructions of Sports Cultures and Hegemonic Masculinity in Football RPF Milena Popova
“Happy Consensual Gangbangs”: Deconstructions of Sports Cultures and Hegemonic Masculinity in Football RPF Milena Popova Abstract This paper uses a close reading of two stories within the gangbang/team sex subgenre of Football Real Person Fiction to investigate how marginalized sports fans can use fan fiction to negotiate the challenges posed to them by hegemonic masculinity within sports culture. These stories engage with themes of safety and vulnerability, hierarchies of masculinity, and issues of sexual consent through common fan fiction reading and writing practices, which allow readers and writers to make meanings from the similarities and differences between the fictionalized representations they create and their knowledge and experience of marginalization within sports culture. In this way, they are able to issue their own challenge to structures of patriarchy and hegemonic masculinity in their fan object - albeit one which is limited in scope. Bio: Milena Popova is a fan, researcher, and activist. Their current research focuses on representations of power and sexual consent in erotic fan fiction as a form of cultural activism, and this spills over into some of their activism. Slashing hegemonic masculinity On October 14th 2016, Welsh football player Ched Evans was found not guilty of rape at retrial at Cardiff crown court, having already served a two-and-a-half-year prison sentence 2 for the crime (Morris & Topping, 2016). Male professional athletes from a range of team sports across Western cultures are accused of sexual assault with some regularity (see Nurka, 2013; Toffoletti, 2007), though convictions - such as Evans’ original conviction - are much rarer (Burke, 2015).

Éric Abidal has made it 1-0 and Barça will go through to the next round if they don’t concede twice in the last 16 minutes, but Athletic have their tails further up than a peacock in heat. Fernando Llorente, muscles bursting out of his XXL shirt, is close to unplayable and the ball is being launched to him by player after player in red-and-white stripes.
