Palumbo, Dr. Nick, May 19, 1928 – January 10, 2010 Born in New Haven, Connecticut, Dr. Nick Palumbo, 81, and son Timmy, 20, passed away in a plane crash on Oahu. Dr. Nick served as a U.S. Marine in World War II and Korea. Earning his pilot's license at age 19, Nick enjoyed a passion for aviation for 60 years. He was a proud member of the Quiet Birdmen and United Flying Octogenarians. Dr. Nick earned a doctorate in veterinary medicine from the University of Missouri Veterinary School in 1959 and then completed a surgical internship and residency at Angel Memorial Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. He had fallen in love with Hawaii while a serviceman and returned to settle in the islands in 1961 with his wife Pat and their young children. A champion for health care for people and animals, Dr. Nick helped establish the University of Hawaii's John A. Burns Medical School and served as its chairman of Comparative Medicine. He was the first veterinarian for the University's Pacific Biomedical Research Center. His work for animals as a veterinary surgeon and practitioner spanned more than 50 years serving Oahu and the communities of Kalaupapa and Lanai. During his career he also served as a board member of the Hawaiian Humane Society and later became their first veterinarian to provide professional care of sheltered animals. He was a tireless advocate for animals throughout his life. In 1987, he married Sue Sylvester, DVM and their family included two children Billy and Timmy. In 1988, the husband and wife team opened The Cat Clinic, a highly respected veterinary hospital specializing in the care of cats. In addition to his lifelong passion for aviation, he also loved bird dog field trials. A great moment for Dr. Nick was when his English Pointer, Riggens White Knight, won the national field trials championship. After his weekly trip to care for Lanai's animals with his son, Timmy by his side, their plane tragically crashed on their way home. Dr. Nick is survived by his wife Sue; and children Billy, Charles (Lorraine), David, Joe (Sabine), Kay Daub (Peter), Nancy Earle (Steph), and Nicholas III (Alex); sisters Helen Magnan (George) and brothers, Joseph (Ann), and William (Alice), as well as nine grandchildren.
