YAEL BERNHARD Selichot OIL ON CANVAS, 2019 Selichot means forgiveness (literally “pardons”) in Hebrew, and refers to the pre- tradition of formally leaving behind our wrongdoings of the year that is coming to a close. Past and future meet as one year ends and another begins. Letting go of the old year makes space for new intentions. It is traditional to recite communal prayers after midnight, including the Thirteen Attributes of Mercy, which appeal to for divine compassion. Personified here are the two faces of time: past, with hair of dying leaves; and future, of budding green foliage. The future forgives the past, gently kissing away a tear before turning to face forward. אלול תשעייט — תשרי תשייפ September 2019 5779- 5780 sunday monday tuesday wednesday thursday friday saturday 1 1 ELUL 2 2 ELUL 3 3 ELUL 4 4 ELUL 5 5 ELUL 6 6 ELUL 7 7 ELUL Parashat Shoftim ׁשפטים 7:01p candle 8:04p ראש חדש אלול Labor Day lighting Havdalah 8 8 ELUL 9 9 ELUL 10 10 ELUL 11 11 ELUL 12 12 ELUL 13 13 ELUL 14 14 ELUL Parashat Ki Teitzei כי תצא 6:50p candle 7:52p lighting Havdalah 15 15 ELUL 16 16 ELUL 17 17 ELUL 18 18 ELUL 19 19 ELUL 20 20 ELUL 21 21 ELUL Parashat Ki Tavo כי תבוא 6:38p 7:40p ליל סליחות candle lighting Leil Selichot Havdalah 22 22 ELUL 23 23 ELUL 24 24 ELUL 25 25 ELUL 26 26 ELUL 27 27 ELUL 28 28 ELUL Parashat Nitzavim נצבים

YAEL BERNHARD Ushpizin OIL ON CANVAS, 2019 The 8-day agricultural of dates back to Biblical times. A sukkah, or shelter, is built for the occasion from organic materials such as branches or stalks. The sukkah has multiple meanings: emulating the temporary shelters in which the slept on their long journey across the Sinai Desert; fashioned after the crude huts built by farmers who slept by their fields during the harvest; and symbolizing the impermanent nature of life – and by contrast, the eternal nature of the soul. The latter is represented by ushpizin – Aramaic for “guests” – who are ritually invited into the sukkah. These guests may be strangers, the poor, historical ancestors, Biblical figures or prophets. They are welcomed as reminders that we are never alone in the house of תשרי-חשון תשייפ .God, though the ceiling is open enough to show stars. Thus this flimsy dwelling in a fragile world is paradoxically called a sukkat shalom – a shelter of peace October 2019 Tishrei- 5780 sunday monday tuesday wednesday thursday friday saturday 1 2 TISHREI 2 3 TISHREI 3 4 TISHREI 4 5 TISHREI 5 6 TISHREI Parashat Vayeilech

© 2019 D. YAEL BERNHARD Noah & the Dove OIL ON CANVAS, 2019 In this month’s Torah portion, Noach, the story of the Great Flood unfolds. Many versions of this epic tale include vivid renditions of the animals within the ark, with their feathers and fur, smells and sounds all mingling within this rocking vessel of birds and beasts – the living genes of all creatures that will repopulate the earth, now washed clean by the flood. As the vast waters recede, Noah sends out first a raven, who cannot find dry land; then a dove, who returns with an olive branch in her beak, which Noah receives with great joy, and then lets her go. The tender young leaves of the olive branch bring the promise of new life that is already budding on the land where these restless animals will soon run free. Daylight Savings Time ends Election Day 10 12 CHESHVAN 11 13 CHESHVAN 12 14 CHESHVAN 13 15 CHESHVAN 14 16 CHESHVAN 15 17 CHESHVAN 16 18 CHESHVAN Parashat Vayera וירא 4:19p candle 5:22p Veterans Day lighting Havdalah 17 19 CHESHVAN 18 20 CHESHVAN 19 21 CHESHVAN 20 22 CHESHVAN 21 23 CHESHVAN 22 24 CHESHVAN 23 25 CHESHVAN Parashat Chayei Sarah חיי שרה 4:14p candle 5:18p lighting Havdalah 24 26 CHESHVAN 25 27 CHESHVAN 26 28 CHESHVAN 27 29 CHESHVAN 28 30 CHESHVAN 29 30 2 KISLEV Parashat Toldot תולדת

YAEL BERNHARD Chumash OIL ON TEXTURED PAPER COLLAGE ON CANVAS, 2018 The word chumash, from the Hebrew word chamesh or “five,” is the name of the Hebrew (or Five Books of ) in the form of a bound book. When written in calligraphy on a scroll, the same book is also known as the Torah. No priest or go-between is needed for to connect to the heart of their faith. To delve into a chumash is to take a personal journey into a collective body of spiritual literature that has been freely interpreted for over 3000 years, and is held sacred all over the world. Ancient and intricate, with interconnecting themes and hidden meanings beneath the p’shat (surface narrative) of each passage, the chumash is a tapestry of timeless teaching tales. Here a woman is pictured reading the great book by firelight, with Biblical scenes and characters coming to life. טבת—שבט תשייפ January 2020 Tevet-Sh’vat 5780 sunday monday tuesday wednesday thursday friday saturday 1 4 TEVET 2 5 TEVET 3 6 TEVET 4 7 TEVET Parashat Vayigash ויגש 4:23p candle 5:28p New Year’s Day lighting Havdalah 5 8 TEVET 6 9 TEVET 7 10 TEVET 8 11 TEVET 9 12 TEVET 10 13 TEVET 11 14 TEVET Parashat Vayechi ויחי 4:29p candle 5:35p עשרה בטבת Asara B’Tevet lighting Havdalah 12 15 TEVET 13 16 TEVET 14 17 TEVET 15 18 TEVET 16 19 TEVET 17 20 TEVET 18 21 TEVET Parashat Shemot שמות 4:37p candle 5:42p lighting Havdalah

YAEL BERNHARD Isaiah & the Seraph ACRYLIC ON TEXTURED PAPER COLLAGE ON CANVAS, 2019 Images of surrender and transformation abound in the Neve’im, or books of prophets, from which the weekly haftarah readings are drawn. This month’s Torah portion, Yitro, in which the Ten Command- ments are revealed, is paired with another passage of revelation from the Book of Isaiah. The prophet has a vision of God seated on a throne in heaven, surrounded by the mythical seraphim. Declaring himself to be of “impure lips,” Isaiah cries out in anguish, whereupon one of the winged creatures touches his mouth with a hot coal from God’s altar, instantly cleansing the prophet’s words. The purifi- cation of language is a challenging subject for a visual artist – making this my fourth painting of this inspiring passage – and probably not my last. שבט-אדר תשייפ February 2020 Sh’vat- 5780 sunday monday tuesday wednesday thursday friday saturday 1 6 SH’VAT Parashat Bo בא

YAEL BERNHARD Mother of Valor OIL ON CANVAS, 2019 This painting revisions “Woman of Valor” or Eshet Chayil, a Jewish song of praise from the Book of Proverbs. Traditionally the song is recited by a husband to honor his wife on the Sabbath for her many contribu - tions to the family. The eshet chayil is intelligent, resourceful, and selfless. More progressive interpretations of this female paradigm hail the woman’s potential to pursue a career, create her own destiny, and thrive as an individual. My version bears special praise for the mother who draws her force from nature and makes of herself an organic vessel in which her children can grow. She teaches them reverence for life, and rejoices in their reaching beyond her. The painted Hebrew words are from an ancient verse of praise: אדר-ניסן תשייפ .May the soul of every living thing bless your name, Eternal Source of Life, and may the spirit of all flesh hold in reverence your memory March 2020 Adar- 5780 sunday monday tuesday wednesday thursday friday saturday 1 5 ADAR 2 6 ADAR 3 7 ADAR 4 8 ADAR 5 9 ADAR 6 10 ADAR 7 11 ADAR Parashat Tetzaveh תצוה 5:36p 6:41p שבת זכור candle lighting Shabbat Zachor Havdalah 8 12 ADAR 9 13 ADAR 10 14 ADAR 11 15 ADAR 12 16 ADAR 13 17 ADAR 14 18 ADAR Parashat Ki Tisa כי תשא שבת פרה 6:43p candle Shabbat 7:48p שושן פורים פורים תענית אסתר ערב פורים Daylight Savings Time begins Erev Ta’anit Esther Purim Shushan Purim lighting Parah Havdalah 15 19 ADAR 16 20 ADAR 17 21 ADAR 18 22 ADAR 19 23 ADAR 20 24 ADAR 21 25 ADAR Parashat Vayakhel-Pekudei ויקהל-פקודי שבת החדש 6:51p candle Shabbat 7:56p Spring Equinox lighting HaChodesh Havdalah 22 26 ADAR 23 27 ADAR 24 28 ADAR 25 29 ADAR 26 1 NISAN 27 2 NISAN 28 3 NISAN Parashat Vayikra ויקרא 6:58p candle 8:03p ראש חדש ניסן Rosh Chodesh lighting Havdalah 29 4 NISAN 30 5 NISAN 31 6 NISAN © 2019 D. YAEL BERNHARD Red Door, Nachla’ot OIL ON CANVAS, 2019 Located in central Jerusalem, Nachla’ot was one of the first neighborhoods to be built outside the Old City walls. Dating back to the 1870s, it’s a labyrinth of stone courtyards, alleyways, tiny synagogues, overgrown kitchen gardens, orphanages, and yeshivot (religious schools). YAEL BERNHARD View of Tzfat From Kaditah GOUACHE ON WATERCOLOR PAPER, 2012 This small painting shows the ancient city of Tzfat (Safed), built on the rugged terrain that overlooks the Kinneret (). Twilight falls on the city, casting changing light on the buildings of white stone, many of which are painted shades of blue ranging from aqua to ultramarine. Many Jews fleeing the Inquisition found refuge in Tzfat. Here is where (Jewish mysticism) was born, and where the graves of many famous and even Hosea the Prophet and the Biblical Hannah are believed to be found. Today Tzfat is a city of artists’ shops, tourist attractions, religious schools, a music school, and a medical school with a diverse mix of Jewish, Druze, and Arab students. 7:03p candle 8:06p lighting Havdalah
