YAEL BERNHARD Selichot OIL ON CANVAS, 2019 Selichot means forgiveness (literally “pardons”) in Hebrew, and refers to the pre-Rosh Hashanah tradition of formally leaving behind our wrongdoings of the year that is coming to a close. Past and future meet as one year ends and another begins. Letting go of the old year makes space for new intentions. It is traditional to recite communal prayers after midnight, including the Thirteen Attributes of Mercy, which appeal to God for divine compassion. Personified here are the two faces of time: past, with hair of dying leaves; and future, of budding green foliage. The future forgives the past, gently kissing away a tear before turning to face forward. אלול תשעייט — תשרי תשייפ September 2019 Elul 5779-Tishrei 5780 sunday monday tuesday wednesday thursday friday saturday 1 1 ELUL 2 2 ELUL 3 3 ELUL 4 4 ELUL 5 5 ELUL 6 6 ELUL 7 7 ELUL Parashat Shoftim ׁשפטים 7:01p candle 8:04p ראש חדש אלול Rosh Chodesh Labor Day lighting Havdalah 8 8 ELUL 9 9 ELUL 10 10 ELUL 11 11 ELUL 12 12 ELUL 13 13 ELUL 14 14 ELUL Parashat Ki Teitzei כי תצא 6:50p candle 7:52p lighting Havdalah 15 15 ELUL 16 16 ELUL 17 17 ELUL 18 18 ELUL 19 19 ELUL 20 20 ELUL 21 21 ELUL Parashat Ki Tavo כי תבוא 6:38p 7:40p ליל סליחות candle lighting Leil Selichot Havdalah 22 22 ELUL 23 23 ELUL 24 24 ELUL 25 25 ELUL 26 26 ELUL 27 27 ELUL 28 28 ELUL Parashat Nitzavim נצבים 6:26p Autumn candle 7:28p Equinox lighting Havdalah 29 ELUL 1 TISHREI 29 30 5780 6:23p 7:25p candle ראש השנה יום אי candle ערב ראש השנה Erev Rosh Hashana lighting Rosh Hashana 5780 lighting © 2019 D. YAEL BERNHARD Ushpizin OIL ON CANVAS, 2019 The 8-day agricultural holiday of Sukkot dates back to Biblical times. A sukkah, or shelter, is built for the occasion from organic materials such as branches or stalks. The sukkah has multiple meanings: emulating the temporary shelters in which the Israelites slept on their long journey across the Sinai Desert; fashioned after the crude huts built by farmers who slept by their fields during the harvest; and symbolizing the impermanent nature of life – and by contrast, the eternal nature of the soul. The latter is represented by ushpizin – Aramaic for “guests” – who are ritually invited into the sukkah. These guests may be strangers, the poor, historical ancestors, Biblical figures or prophets. They are welcomed as reminders that we are never alone in the house of תשרי-חשון תשייפ .God, though the ceiling is open enough to show stars. Thus this flimsy dwelling in a fragile world is paradoxically called a sukkat shalom – a shelter of peace October 2019 Tishrei-Cheshvan 5780 sunday monday tuesday wednesday thursday friday saturday 1 2 TISHREI 2 3 TISHREI 3 4 TISHREI 4 5 TISHREI 5 6 TISHREI Parashat Vayeilech וילך 6:14p Shabbat candle Shuva 7:17p צום גדליה 7:23p ראש השנה יום בי Havdalah שבת שובה Rosh Hashana II Havdalah Tzom Gedaliah lighting 6 7 TISHREI 7 8 TISHREI 8 9 TISHREI 9 10 TISHREI 10 11 TISHREI 11 12 TISHREI 12 13 TISHREI Parashat Ha’Azinu האזינו Erev Yom 6:08p Yom 6:03p Kippur candle Kippur 7:10p candle 7:05p Havdalah lighting Havdalah יום כפור lighting ערב יום כפור 13 14 TISHREI 14 15 TISHREI 15 16 TISHREI 16 17 TISHREI 17 18 TISHREI 18 19 TISHREI 19 20 TISHREI Torah reading: Exodus 33:12-34:26 Columbus Day 6:00p 7:02p 5:52p ערב סוכות 6:55p סוכות יום וי candle סוכות יום הי סוכות יום די סוכות יום גי 7:01p סוכות יום בי candle סוכות יום אי Erev candle Sukkot lighting Sukkot 1 lighting Sukkot 2 Havdalah Sukkot 3 Sukkot 4 Sukkot 5 lighting Sukkot 6 Havdalah 20 21 TISHREI 21 22 TISHREI 22 23 TISHREI 23 24 TISHREI 24 25 TISHREI 25 26 TISHREI 26 27 TISHREI Parashat B’reishit בראשית סוכות יום זי שמיני עצרת Sukkot 7 5:49p Shmini Atzeret 6:52p 5:42p 6:51p candle 6:45p שמחת תורה candle יזכור Hoshana candle Rabah lighting Yizkor lighting Simchat Torah Havdalah lighting Havdalah 27 28 TISHREI 28 29 TISHREI 29 30 TISHREI 30 1 CHESHVAN 31 2 CHESHVAN ראש חדש חשון ראש חדש חשון Rosh Chodesh Rosh Chodesh Halloween © 2019 D. YAEL BERNHARD Noah & the Dove OIL ON CANVAS, 2019 In this month’s Torah portion, Noach, the story of the Great Flood unfolds. Many versions of this epic tale include vivid renditions of the animals within the ark, with their feathers and fur, smells and sounds all mingling within this rocking vessel of birds and beasts – the living genes of all creatures that will repopulate the earth, now washed clean by the flood. As the vast waters recede, Noah sends out first a raven, who cannot find dry land; then a dove, who returns with an olive branch in her beak, which Noah receives with great joy, and then lets her go. The tender young leaves of the olive branch bring the promise of new life that is already budding on the land where these restless animals will soon run free. Daylight Savings Time ends Election Day 10 12 CHESHVAN 11 13 CHESHVAN 12 14 CHESHVAN 13 15 CHESHVAN 14 16 CHESHVAN 15 17 CHESHVAN 16 18 CHESHVAN Parashat Vayera וירא 4:19p candle 5:22p Veterans Day lighting Havdalah 17 19 CHESHVAN 18 20 CHESHVAN 19 21 CHESHVAN 20 22 CHESHVAN 21 23 CHESHVAN 22 24 CHESHVAN 23 25 CHESHVAN Parashat Chayei Sarah חיי שרה 4:14p candle 5:18p lighting Havdalah 24 26 CHESHVAN 25 27 CHESHVAN 26 28 CHESHVAN 27 29 CHESHVAN 28 30 CHESHVAN 29 1 KISLEV 30 2 KISLEV Parashat Toldot תולדת 4:11p candle 5:15p ראש חדש כסלו Thanksgiving ראש חדש כסלו סיגד Sigd Rosh Chodesh Day Rosh Chodesh lighting Havdalah © 2019 D. YAEL BERNHARD Chalutzim ACRYLIC ON WATERCOLOR PAPER, 2019 In British-mandate Palestine (1918-1947), young Jewish pioneers known as chalut zim arrived from Eastern Europe and Russia, fleeing intractable poverty and vicious pogroms. These secular, social idealists had a vision: to build a new Jewish state in the historical homeland of the Jewish people. Deprived of property rights in the Diaspora, these educated young Ashkenazim eagerly rolled up their sleeves to work the land. By day they drained swamps, built cobblestone roads, and tilled agricultural fields. At night they studied Hebrew, the new modern language of the land; sang and danced; listened to classical music by short wave radio from Europe – and once, were treated to a live concert by famed violinist Jascha Heifetz, who played in the stone quarry of kibbutz Ein Harod in 1926. Mr. Heifetz manifests here in the center of a menorah as the shamash כסלו-טבת תשייפ .or servant of the chalut zim, who uphold the determination of the long-ago Maccabees honored in the story of Chanukah December 2019 Kislev-Tevet 5780 sunday monday tuesday wednesday thursday friday saturday 1 3 KISLEV 2 4 KISLEV 3 5 KISLEV 4 6 KISLEV 5 7 KISLEV 6 8 KISLEV 7 9 KISLEV Parashat Vayetzei ויצא 4:10p candle 5:14p lighting Havdalah 8 10 KISLEV 9 11 KISLEV 10 12 KISLEV 11 13 KISLEV 12 14 KISLEV 13 15 KISLEV 14 16 KISLEV Parashat Vayishlach וישלח 4:11p candle 5:15p lighting Havdalah 15 17 KISLEV 16 18 KISLEV 17 19 KISLEV 18 20 KISLEV 19 21 KISLEV 20 22 KISLEV 21 23 KISLEV Parashat Vayeshev וישב 4:13p candle 5:17p lighting Winter Solstice Havdalah 22 24 KISLEV 23 25 KISLEV 24 26 KISLEV 25 27 KISLEV 26 28 KISLEV 27 29 KISLEV 28 30 KISLEV Parashat Miketz מקץ חנוכה וי 4:17p חנוכה הי חנוכה די חנוכה גי חנוכה בי חנוכה אי ערב חנוכה ראש חדש טבת Erev Chanukah Chanukah Chanukah Chanukah Christmas Chanukah Chanukah candle Chanukah 1 candle 5:18 2 candles 5:19 3 candles 5:19 4 candles 5:20 Day 5 candles 5:20 6 candles lighting 7 candles 5:22 Rosh Chodesh 29 1 TEVET 30 2 TEVET 31 3 TEVET חנוכה חי חנוכה זי Chanukah ראש חדש טבת Chanukah 8 candles 5:23p Rosh Chodesh 8th day New Year’s Eve © 2019 D. YAEL BERNHARD Chumash OIL ON TEXTURED PAPER COLLAGE ON CANVAS, 2018 The word chumash, from the Hebrew word chamesh or “five,” is the name of the Hebrew Bible (or Five Books of Moses) in the form of a bound book. When written in calligraphy on a scroll, the same book is also known as the Torah. No priest or go-between is needed for Jews to connect to the heart of their faith. To delve into a chumash is to take a personal journey into a collective body of spiritual literature that has been freely interpreted for over 3000 years, and is held sacred all over the world. Ancient and intricate, with interconnecting themes and hidden meanings beneath the p’shat (surface narrative) of each passage, the chumash is a tapestry of timeless teaching tales.

Alternative selections are offered each shabbat: a shorter reading (around twenty verses) and a longer one (around thirty verses). The readings are a guide and congregations may choose to read more or less from within that part of the parashah. On certain special shabbatot, a special second (or exceptionally, third) scroll reading is read in addition to the week’s portion. Haftarah readings are chosen to parallel key elements in the section of the Torah being read and therefore vary from one year in the triennial cycle to the next. Some of the suggested haftarot are from taken from k’tuvim (Writings) rather than n’vi’ivm (Prophets). When this is the case the appropriate, adapted blessings can be found on page 245 of the MRJ siddur, Seder Ha-t’fillot. This calendar follows the Biblical definition of the length of festivals.

  • Significant Times and Dates
Significant Times and Dates Festivals The Jewish Calendar Jewish holidays or festivals (yamim tovim) are holidays observed by Jews throughout the Hebrew calendar and include religious, cultural, and national aspects. Some are derived from Biblical mitzvot (commandments), others from rabbinic mandates, while others commemorate Jewish history and the history of the State of Israel. All Jewish holidays begin the evening before the date specified. This is because a Jewish day begins and ends at sunset, rather than at midnight. (It is inferred from the story of creation in Genesis, where it says, “And there was evening, and there was morning, one day”.) Jewish holidays occur on the same dates every year in the Hebrew calendar, but the dates vary in the Gregorian calendar. This is because the Hebrew calendar is a lunisolar calendar (based on the cycles of both the moon and sun), whereas the Gregorian calendar is only a solar calendar. The Jewish calendar is primarily lunar, with each month beginning on the new moon. There are approximately 12.4 lunar months in every solar year, so a 12- month lunar calendar loses about 11 days every year. To prevent the “drifting” of months and holy days, Hillel II, in the fourth century, established a fixed calendar based on mathematical and astronomical calculations. This calendar, still in use today, realigned the lunar calendar with the solar years. Holidays of biblical and rabbinic (Talmudic) origin include Q The Sabbath Q Rosh Chodesh—The New Month Q Rosh Hashanah—The Jewish New Year Q Aseret Yemei Teshuva—Ten
