Corpo. Mídia. Padrão de beleza. ABSTRACT The present work intends to understand how being a South Korean pop star contributes to the construction of the beauty pattern of women in that country and how the media is linked to this spread of values. For this purpose, the research approaches the history of the conceptions of female body and beauty over the centuries, in different cultural realities. It is also explained about how the media interferes in the construction and propagation of these ideals of what it is to be beautiful. It also discusses the origins of the musical genre kpop and the main characteristics that are essential to understand the context in which the women who work in this industry experience. In addition, the physical investments that these artists make to achieve the required body pattern in that cultural and media context are investigated. The methodology was based on the bibliographical research, for the theoretical reference of the research and later the documentary research, which was done through the analysis of photos of the weekly musical programs and the official website of the group and videos of Youtube, the female group Red Velvet. After finishing this process, it was possible to conclude that within the kpop culture, in South Korea, there is a prevailing beauty pattern, where lean women stand out, with faces of serene and delicate features, clear skin; and which is disseminated through the various online and offline media. In each case they represent highly original work by distinguished experts that adds depth and insight to the statistical analysis of the index. THE LEGATUM INSTITUTE FOREWORD South Korea’s modern history is one of extremes: harsh colonial occupation, near-total destruction by war, crony capitalism, brutal dictatorship, episodic sabre-rattling by its heavily armed neighbour—and, of course, the triumph of democracy and lightning rise to a level of affluence approaching that of Japan. It shouldn’t be surprising, then, that South Koreans continue to struggle with their past and worry much about their future, realities reflected in the country’s mixed rankings on the 2012 Legatum Prosperity Index. While it gets high marks on sub-indices for entrepreneurship and opportunity (19th out of 142 countries), education (7th), and health (24th), it ranking surprisingly low for a rich democracy on safety and security (40th), personal freedom (56th), and social capital (51st).

  • Value of Youtube to the Music Industry - Paper III - Promotion
Value of YouTube to the music industry - Paper III - Promotion June 2017 RBB Economics 1 1 Introduction The music industry has undergone significant change over the past few years, with declining volumes of music sold through an ownership model (such as downloads) and rapid growth in usage models (such as streaming).1 While many services provide value to the recorded music industry, in the 12 months to December 2016 one video streaming platform, YouTube, paid out over USD 1 billion to the music industry from advertising alone.2 YouTube claims that not only does it return money directly to creators, but also that it has a promotional effect on music.3 However, some commentators argue that YouTube has a negative impact on the music industry: paying insufficiently for content and cannibalising other services. RBB Economics has undertaken several empirical analyses in order to evaluate YouTube’s potential promotional or cannibalisation effects on the music industry in Europe. We analyse the results from 1,500 person user surveys carried out in each of four European countries, as well as data on YouTube views and streams on audio platforms of over 8,000 tracks across these countries over a three year period.4 In our first note we considered the evidence of cannibalisation by YouTube of other legitimate music services. ● Looking at survey evidence we found that significant cannibalisation is unlikely: users of music on YouTube are primarily lighter users, and if music videos were no longer shown on YouTube, 85% of users’ time would be lost or shifted to lower or similar value channels, and even to file sharing or piracy.

Despite their close economic relationship since 1965, their conflicting historic and political relationships and deep-seated prejudice against each other have continued. The Korean government’s official ban on the direct import of Japanese cultural products existed until 1997, but various kinds of Japanese cultural products, including popular music, found their way into Korea through various legal and illegal routes and influenced contemporary Korean popular culture. Since 1998, under Korea’s Open- Door Policy, legally available Japanese popular cultural products became widely consumed, especially among young Koreans fascinated by Japan’s quintessentially postmodern popular culture, despite lingering resentments towards Japan.
