Saturday, April 20th Acrylic Painting Class Diana Furman Multi Purpose Room 2:00 pm Diana will walk you through a step by step painting program. You will be surprised with the masterpiece you will have created within the hour with your own two hands. The Art of Napkin Wednesday, April 16th Dining Associates Gardens Folding 2:00 pm The Art of Napkin Folding- is something fun and useful for every day. Folded napkins can both serve a practical purpose: tucking in utensils, completing the theme in the place setting, and offer decorative flair. To inspire you, associates from the Dinning Services department will present a few ways to spiff up a plain napkin. Celebrate Winter With Thursday, Feb. 28th Liz Richardson Multi Purpose Room An Ice Wine Tasting 11:00 am You’re invited to join Maiden Park Executive Director Liz Richardson and take a trip through the Finger Lakes via an Ice Wine journey. The Finger Lakes Region of New York State boasts a preeminent wine making and grape producing region. While many New York State wines – reds, whites and varietals are wonderful to savor, the unique taste of an Ice Wine is truly exceptional. If you have ever sampled such a wine then you know first-hand that without the help of Mother Nature and Old Man Winter this nectar of the gods would not be possible. Liz will introduce you to the history of Ice Wine making from its German and Austrian roots to the unique natural confluences here in the Finger Lakes that makes the region’s Ice Wine so delicious. With her close to 20 years’ experience in home wine making, Liz is excited to share her passion for a home grown treasure from our own Finger Lakes Region. Cheers! Sunday, January 20th Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Maura Martin Multi Purpose Room 2:00 pm One of the most gifted orators of our time was Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. His eloquent words, spoken at the pulpit and on the streets, helped lead the nation through the tumultuous civil rights movement. He spoke of non-violence, hope, and love during a time when unrest and civil disobedience was the order of the day. COURSES FACULTY DAY AND TIME LOCATION Effective Communication Tuesday, January 15th Alzheimer's Association Multi Purpose Room Strategies 6:00 pm Explore how communication takes place when someone has Alzheimer’s, learn to decode the verbal and behavioral messages delivered by someone with dementia, and identify strategies to connect and communicate at each stage of the disease. Experimenting with Sunday, February 17th Kristilee Thom Gardens Bubbles 2:00 pm Whether you are 1 or 100, bubbles never fail to bring a smile to your face. Bubbles are fun to blow and play with, but they can also teach us something about surface tension, light reflection, geometry, and more. In this activity, we will explore the science behind bubbles and how to make bubbles that are stronger and last longer. Foods from New York Tuesday, March 5th Joan Bardossi Gardens State 2:00 pm Joan will present foods that originated or became famous in New York. There will be some tastings along with tidbits of history. Travel across the state without leaving your abode. Kerela: The Influence of Monday, Febuary 25th Black Gold and the Beth Brancato Multi Purpose Room 1:30 pm Backwaters Pepper was the main commodity exported from Kerala. It was the Greeks and Romans who popularized the use of pepper in Europe. They used pepper for preserving food and also as a medicine. Though in Kerala, it was a crop used only for medicinal purposes, it had a much more important place in Europe. The Kerala backwaters are a chain of brackish lagoons and lakes lying parallel to the Arabian Sea coast (known as the Malabar Coast) of Kerala state in southern India. Friday, March 1st London Rosemary Irwin Gardens 11:00 am The crown jewels, Buckingham Palace, Camden Market…in London, history collides with art, fashion, food, and good British ale. A perfect day is different for everyone: Rosemary will take us to London and not just the museums but the changing life of the city itself, from observations of Chaucer to the new Brexit nation. COURSES FACULTY DAY AND TIME LOCATION Music & Life of Elvis Tuesday, January 8th Larry Shearer Multi Purpose Room Presley 11:00 am Born on January 8, 1935, in Tupelo, Mississippi, Elvis Presley came from very humble beginnings and grew up to become one of the biggest names in rock 'n' roll. By the mid-1950s, he appeared on the radio, television and the silver screen. On August 16, 1977, at age 42, he died of heart failure, which was related to his drug addiction. Since his death, Presley has remained one of the world's most popular music icons. Music & Life of Benny Monday, January 21st Larry Shearer Multi Purpose Room Goodman 1:15 pm The King of Swing! Famed clarinetist, composer ("Stompin' at the Savoy") and conductor, educated at the Lewis Institute in Chicago and a student of Schillinger and Schoepp. He was a clarinetist with the orchestras of Bix Beiderbecke, Jules Herbuveaux, Arnold Johnson and Ben Pollack, and also played in Broadway theater orchestras. Join Larry in this swinging presentation on Benny Goodman. Music & Life of The Four Tuesday, February 12th Larry Shearer Multi Purpose Room Freshman 11:00 am Come learn about The Four Freshmen, an American male vocal band quartet that blends open-harmonic jazz arrangements with the big band vocal group sounds of The Modernaires (Glenn Miller), The Pied Pipers (Tommy Dorsey), and The Mel-Tones (Mel Tormé, Artie Shaw), founded in the barbershop tradition. The Four Freshmen is considered a vocal band because the singers accompany themselves on guitar, horns, bass, and drums, among other instrumental configurations. Music & Life of The Monday, February 18th Larry Shearer Multi Purpose Room McGuire Sisters 1:15 pm The McGuire Sisters were a singing trio in American popular music. The group was composed of three sisters: Christine McGuire, Dorothy "Dottie" McGuire and Phyllis McGuire. Among their most popular songs are "Sincerely" and "Sugartime", both number-one hits. Let Larry take you back in time with these singers. Tuesday, March 12th Music & Life of Kay Starr Larry Shearer Multi Purpose Room 11:00 am Katherine Laverne Starks (July 21, 1922 – November 3, 2016), known professionally as Kay Starr, was an American pop and jazz singer who enjoyed considerable success in the late 1940s and 1950s. She is best remembered for introducing two songs that became No. 1 hits "Wheel of Fortune" in 1951 and "Rock and Roll Waltz" in 1955. Starr was successful in every field of music she tried, such as jazz, pop, and country; but her roots were in jazz. Billie Holiday called her "the only white woman who could sing the blues." COURSES FACULTY DAY AND TIME LOCATION Monday, March 18th Music & Life Carly Simon Larry Shearer Multi Purpose Room 1:15 pm Larry will present the music & life of Grammy winner Carly Simon. She was one of the biggest singer/songwriters in the 1970s. She was famously married to fellow rocker James Taylor and wrote the 1972 hit single 'You're So Vain.' Music & Life of Tuesday, April 9th Larry Shearer Multi Purpose Room Dick Haymes 11:00 am Arguably one of the best singers of the twentieth century, Dick Haymes was born in Argentina to a Scots/Irish father and Irish mother, but brought to the U.S. as an infant. Dick inherited his vocal gift from his mother who made ends meet during the Depression as a singer and voice teacher. Music & Life of Monday, April 15th Larry Shearer Multi Purpose Room Bobby Hackett 1:15 pm Bobby Hackett was born under the name of Robert Leo Hackett on the 31st January, 1915 in Providence , Rhode Island. Bobby, who was later to become the most important white representative of Dixieland jazz. He learned banjo, guitar and violin as a child. He left school at 14 and played from then on with local dance orchestras. Join Larry as he share more about Bobby Hackett's music and life. Nicaragua, diving into a Monday, March 25th Beth Brancato Multi Purpose Room place stuck in time 1:30 pm Nicaragua: the land of volcanoes, coffee plantations and an un-spoilt coast. We visually travel to this Central American country to build a home in a rural town with the locals.
