Folded napkins can both serve a practical purpose: tucking in utensils, completing the theme in the place setting, and offer decorative flair. To inspire you, associates from the Dinning Services department will present a few ways to spiff up a plain napkin.

Celebrate Winter With Thursday, Feb. 28th Liz Richardson Multi Purpose Room An Ice Wine Tasting 11:00 am You’re invited to join Maiden Park Executive Director Liz Richardson and take a trip through the Finger Lakes via an Ice Wine journey. The Finger Lakes Region of New York State boasts a preeminent wine making and grape producing region. While many New York State wines – reds, whites and varietals are wonderful to savor, the unique taste of an Ice Wine is truly exceptional. If you have ever sampled such a wine then you know first-hand that without the help of Mother Nature and Old Man Winter this nectar of the gods would not be possible. Liz will introduce you to the history of Ice Wine making from its German and Austrian roots to the unique natural confluences here in the Finger Lakes that makes the region’s Ice Wine so delicious. With her close to 20 years’ experience in home wine making, Liz is excited to share her passion for a home grown treasure from our own Finger Lakes Region. Cheers!

Sunday, January 20th Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Maura Martin Multi Purpose Room 2:00 pm One of the most gifted orators of our time was Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. His eloquent words, spoken at the pulpit and on the streets, helped lead the nation through the tumultuous civil rights movement. Effective Communication Tuesday, January 15th Alzheimer's Association Multi Purpose Room Strategies 6:00 pm Explore how communication takes place when someone has Alzheimer’s, learn to decode the verbal and behavioral messages delivered by someone with dementia, and identify strategies to connect and communicate at each stage of the disease.

Experimenting with Sunday, February 17th Kristilee Thom Gardens Bubbles 2:00 pm Whether you are 1 or 100, bubbles never fail to bring a smile to your face. Bubbles are fun to blow and play with, but they can also teach us something about surface tension, light reflection, geometry, and more. In this activity, we will explore the science behind bubbles and how to make bubbles that are stronger and last longer.

Foods from New York Tuesday, March 5th Joan Bardossi Gardens State 2:00 pm Joan will present foods that originated or became famous in New York. There will be some tastings along with tidbits of history. Travel across the state without leaving your abode.

Kerela: The Influence of Monday, Febuary 25th Black Gold and the Beth Brancato Multi Purpose Room 1:30 pm Backwaters Pepper was the main commodity exported from Kerala. It was the Greeks and Romans who popularized the use of pepper in Europe. They used pepper for preserving food and also as a medicine. Though in Kerala, it was a crop used only for medicinal purposes, it had a much more important place in Europe. The Kerala backwaters are a chain of brackish lagoons and lakes lying parallel to the Arabian Sea coast (known as the Malabar Coast) of Kerala state in southern India.

Music & Life of Elvis Tuesday, January 8th Larry Shearer Multi Purpose Room Presley 11:00 am Born on January 8, 1935, in Tupelo, Mississippi, Elvis Presley came from very humble beginnings and grew up to become one of the biggest names in rock 'n' roll. By the mid-, he appeared on the radio, television and the silver screen. On August 16, 1977, at age 42, he died of heart failure, which was related to his drug addiction. Since his death, Presley has remained one of the world's most popular music icons.

Famed clarinetist, composer ("Stompin' at the Savoy") and conductor, educated at the Lewis Institute in Chicago and a student of Schillinger and Schoepp. He was a clarinetist with the orchestras of Bix Beiderbecke, Jules Herbuveaux, Arnold Johnson and Ben Pollack, and also played in Broadway theater orchestras. Music & Life of The Four Tuesday, February 12th Larry Shearer Multi Purpose Room Freshman 11:00 am Come learn about The Four Freshmen, an American male vocal band quartet that blends open-harmonic arrangements with the vocal group sounds of (), The Pied Pipers (), and The Mel-Tones (Mel Tormé, ), founded in the barbershop tradition. The Four Freshmen is considered a vocal band because the singers accompany themselves on guitar, horns, bass, and drums, among other instrumental configurations.

The group was composed of three sisters: Christine McGuire, Dorothy "Dottie" McGuire and Phyllis McGuire. Among their most popular songs are "Sincerely" and "Sugartime", both number-one hits. Let Larry take you back in time with these singers.

Tuesday, March 12th Music & Life of Kay Starr Larry Shearer Multi Purpose Room 11:00 am Katherine Laverne Starks (July 21, 1922 – November 3, 2016), known professionally as Kay Starr, was an American pop and jazz singer who enjoyed considerable success in the late and 1950s. She is best remembered for introducing two songs that became No. 1 hits "Wheel of Fortune" in 1951 and "Rock and Roll Waltz" in 1955. Starr was successful in every field of music she tried, such as jazz, pop, and country; but her roots were in jazz. Billie Holiday called her "the only white woman who could sing the blues." Monday, March 18th Music & Life Carly Simon Larry Shearer Multi Purpose Room 1:15 pm Larry will present the music & life of Grammy winner Carly Simon. She was one of the biggest singer/songwriters in the 1970s. She was famously married to fellow rocker James Taylor and wrote the 1972 hit single 'You're So Vain.'

Music & Life of Tuesday, April 9th Larry Shearer Multi Purpose Room 11:00 am Arguably one of the best singers of the twentieth century, Dick Haymes was born in Argentina to a Scots/Irish father and Irish mother, but brought to the U.S. as an infant. Dick inherited his vocal gift from his mother who made ends meet during the Depression as a singer and voice teacher.

Music & Life of Monday, April 15th Larry Shearer Multi Purpose Room Bobby Hackett 1:15 pm Bobby Hackett was born under the name of Robert Leo Hackett on the 31st January, 1915 in Providence , Rhode Island. Bobby, who was later to become the most important white representative of Dixieland jazz. He learned banjo, guitar and violin as a child. He left school at 14 and played from then on with local dance orchestras. Join Larry as he share more about Bobby Hackett's music and life.

North and South Korea- Monday, April 22nd Beth Brancato Multi Purpose Room Extreme Polarities 1:30 pm After almost complete destruction following the war, South Korea, with typical national zeal, has reshaped itself from a hardened concrete and steel economic powerhouse into a softer-edged 21st-century urban ideal of parks, culture and design, the signs are that the real miracle is currently unfolding. North Korea, on theater hand remains locked in vacuum or struggle and despair.

Effective Communication Strategies, Understanding Alzheimer's Association Alzheimer's and Dementia, and Understanding and Responding to Dementia Related Behavior The Alzheimer's Association of the Rochester & Finger Lakes Region, has been providing programs, services and advocacy since 1981 to individuals with Alzheimer's disease to their families and health care providers. They serve a nine-county area that includes Chemung, Livingston, Monroe, Ontario, Schuyler, Seneca, Steuben, Wayne and Yates counties.

Joan Bardossi Foods From New York State

Joan is passionate about travel and history. Cooking allows her to pursue those passions. Most of her career has been in hotels. She was fortunate to work at the Olympics in Beijing and London. Her career led her to Watermark Retirement Communities by way of the Rochester Legacy group. She feel fortunate everyday to able interact with incredible associates and residents. She learns every day from their experiences and generous sharing of lifetime knowledge and wisdom. Watermark University allows her to share her passions with others. Joan's family and friends are great supports in all that she does. To say what she is passionate about, it is necessary that she includes her furry kids. Izzie, a sheep dog, and Emma, a mixture of all sorts, greet her every day with enthusiasm and a search for a treat. Hiking, swimming, kayaking and paddleball also keep her busy.

Jerry Bennett The Slave Experience and the Underground Railroad

Jerry Bennett, local Red Cross volunteer and former staff member, will share from his 40+ years experience. He has a passion to learn about the Underground Railroad and has personal connections to the movement. Photos, props, handouts, and stories will help guide us along this humanitarian journey.

Tina Hartman A New Year Around the World

Tina is the newest addition to the Community Life Team at The Legacy at Maiden Park. She has worked in the senior living field for many years in the Greece area. Tina enjoys all the simple things in life; music, art, and great companionship.

London, Paris, Seven Wonders of the World and Rosemary Irwin Beyond, The Smithsonian Institution Rosemary Irwin lectures throughout our local area on topics as varied as health care, history, art, and technology. Over the past five years, she has facilitated classes created by Harvard, Stanford, and Humanities New York, translating complex material into lively non-academic discussions. Born in ’s Silicon Valley, Rosemary has made Rochester her home for the past 30 years. Now that her youngest child is safely off to Vanderbilt University, her life mission is “to give lifetime learners a reason to be in the room.”

Maura Martin Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Maura was born and raised in Chili, NY. She has one older sister. Graduated from Gates Chili High School in 2007 and went on to get her associates at MCC while playing NJCAA division 1 soccer and Lacrosse. In 2008 she was named NJCAA division 1 woman's soccer player of the year. After MCC she went to SUNY Cortland and continued to play soccer and graduate with a BS in Therapeutic Recreation. She is a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist and has worked in assisted living, group homes, nursing homes, summer camps and programs for individuals with disabilities for over 10 years.

Candice Polaikis 2018 World Series Champions

Candice has been with Legacy for two years. She is a mother of a 15 year old son, Daniel who plays football, basketball and track. Candice has three dogs, loves to cook and spend time with friends and family. She is a big fan of the Boston Red Sox and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Shelly Reitz Skydiving

Shelly Reitz is a mother of a 21 year old son in college. She has 2 dogs, Lucy and Princess. Born in Hilton NY and now lives in Gates currently and she just recently got engaged. Shelly has been working in Healthcare for 29 years, nurse for 10 years. Her hobbies are reading, cooking, going to flea markets, and apparently skydiving. NAME OF INSTRUCTOR CLASS NAME

Elizabeth Richardson Celebrate Winter with an Ice Wine Tasting

Liz is a Past President of the Rotary Club of Greece, NY. She served as International Service Chair and as Assistant Governor to Rotary District 7120. She is a multiple Paul Harris Fellow – Rotary International’s highest award. Liz is the Executive Director here at Maiden Park.

Laurie Selover Skydiving

Laurie is a resident of Greece, NY, born and raised. She has two children Erica and Ryan. They have given her three wonderful grandchildren. She has a brother and 2 sisters. She is the youngest of the family. Laurie attended Monroe Community College and received a degree in Travel and Tourism. She never ended up working in that field instead she went in to Retail Management. When her mother-in-law fell ill she realized it was a sign for her to help people. She went to school and got her Certified Nursing Assistant certification. She worked in that capacity and realized she wanted to go further with her education and become a nurse. So being in her late 40’s she went back to school and became a nurse. Laurie worked several different areas of nursing and realized that her passion is to work in Assisted/Memory care living. She loves being able to care for people. Nursing for her isn’t her job, it’s part of who she is.

Kristilee lives in Hilton and loves running programs for seniors. She loves hockey and enjoys spending time with her sister and going to the Nighthawks games.
