Main research topic: ‘Connectivity of coral reef ecosystems to help marine biodiversity conservation and management of marine resources’. My research activities focus on population genetics and phylogeography of coral reefs organisms, with emphasis on connectivity of coral reef organisms and the impact of natural/anthropogenic disturbance on the genetic diversity and geographic structuring of marine populations. COMPETENCES AND TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE Extensive fieldwork/diving experience in marine environment (French Polynesia, New Caledonia, Indonesia, Philippines, Papua New Guinea, Fiji, Hawaii, Lesser Antilles, Mayotte, Red Sea, Mediterranean Sea, Madagascar) including post-larvae collection and rearing - Fieldwork experience in tropical rainforests (French Polynesia, Panama, Indonesia). Molecular techniques: Experienced with various molecular techniques (extractions, PCR, electrophoresis, cloning, sequencing…), in characterizing genetic markers (allozymes, EPIC-PCR, microsatellites, mtDNA), on different DNA fragments analyzers (ABI, Li-Cor, Pharmacia Biotech, Beckman Coulter). Has worked in eight different molecular lab during the past ten years (Montpellier and Perpignan in France, UC Santa Cruz, Smithsonian Tropical Research Institution in Panama, University van Amsterdam in the Nederlands, University of Bologna at Ravenna in Italy, Guadeloupe and New Caledonia) and with various organisms (fishes, butterflies, serpulids, limpets, corals, giant clams, holothurians…). Larvae of 17 Lycaenidae butterfly species from Europe, North America, South East Asia and Australia were observed to retain at least some of their adaptations related to myrmecophily even after parasitic braconid larvae have emerged from them. The myrme- cophilous glandular organs and vibratory muscles of such larval carcasses remain functional for up to 8 days. The cuticle of lycaenid larvae contains extractable “adoption substances” which elicit anten- nal drumming in their tending ants. These adoption substances, as well, appear to persist in a functional state beyond parasitoid emer- gence, and the larval carcasses are hence tended much like healthy caterpillars. In all examples, the braconids may receive selective advantages through myrmecophily of their host larvae, instead of being suppressed by the ant guard. Interactions where parasitoids exploit the ant-mutualism of their lycaenid hosts have as yet been recorded only from the Apanteles group in the Braconidae- Microgasterinae. Southeast Asia has one of the highest Lepidopteran biodiversity in the world, while over 1,200 species of butterflies reside in Malaysia. Despite high Lepidopteran diversity, there is still little knowledge on the butterfly distribution in the islands of Southeast Asia. The aim of this study was to generate species data for butterflies at the islands of Pulau Perhentian Besar and Pulau Bidong in Terengganu region, Malaysia. The collected data will be a foundation for long-term monitoring, future research and a species guideline for tourism. The faunistic composition of Rhopalocera was studied by using 20 baited traps in which 10 baited traps were set at the canopy level and another 10 baited traps were set in the understorey for seven days on each island. The baited traps at the understory and canopy level were set on selected trees at 1 m and 15 m above the ground respectively, and left to function from 0800 hours to 1700 hours. Ripe pineapples were used as bait to attract butterflies. Aerial netting along one kilometre of line transects were also conducted for catching butterflies. A total of 26 species of butterflies from four families were caught during the sampling period.

THO Summary: The preimaginal instars of three Malayan Lycaenidae species are described. The relationships between the larvae and ants are analysed. Drupadia theda thesmia HEWITSON 1863, and Surendra vivarna amisena HEWITSON 1862, live in symbiosis with ants. They show perfect mimesis and look exactly like their food plants. The third species, Tarucus water- stradti vileja FRUHSTORFER 1918 has to be regarded as a parasite of ants. Drupadia feeds on flowers ofIxora humilis (Rubiaceae). It was observed with the ant Crematogaster difformis (Myrmicinae). Surendra feeds on young shoots ofAlbizia falcata (Mimosaceae) and was visited by the ant Anoplolepis longipes (Camponotinae). Taurucus feeds on Eugenia sp. (Myrtaceae) and was associated with a Crematogaster species (Myrmici­ nae). The caterpillars are figured in color. The myrmecophilic relationships are discussed. Von den drei malaysischen Lycaeniden-Arten (1) Drupadia theda thesmia HEWITSON 1863 (2) Surendra vivarna amisena HEWITSON 1862 (3) Tarucus waterstradti viieja FRUHSTORFER 1918 werden Entwicklungsstadien beschrieben und farbig abgebildet sowie das Zusammenleben mit Ameisen dokumentiert. Received 12 Jul 1999 Accepted 7 Mar 2000 ABSTRACT Butterfly diversity at Ton Nga-Chang Wildlife Sanctuary, Songkhla Province, was investigated by using baited-traps along transects in three types of habitats from June 1997 to May 1998. A total of 147 species involving 77 genera and 9 families (Papilionidae, Pieridae, Danaidae, Satyridae, Amathusiidae, Nymphalidae, Riodinidae, Lycaenidae and Hesperiidae) were captured and identified. Of these, Nymphalidae and Lycaenidae were found to be the dominant families, in contrast to Ridionidae, Hesperiidae and Papilionidae, which were scarce. The largest number of individuals was collected in traps baited with fruit at a waterfall forest site. The monthly diversity was calculated by using the Shannon-Weiner diversity index and the highest diversity was found in February (H=3.20), and the lowest in September (H=1.72). The relationships between physical factors and individuals, total species and number of butterflies per family were determined. There were no significant correlations between humidity, rainfall and temperature, and the total number of individuals or species (P>0.05). The total abundance of Hesperiidae increased with humidity. Total numbers of Amathusiidae and Satyridae were inversely related to rainfall.
