Throughout the Edo period (1603-1868), works of fiction were liberally illustrated with woodblock printed images, which, especially towards the mid-19th century, had become an essential component of most popular literature in Japan. With the opening of Japan’s borders in the Meiji period (1868-1912), writers who had grown up reading illustrated fiction were exposed to foreign works of literature that largely eschewed the use of illustration as a medium for storytelling, in turn leading them to reevaluate the role of image in their own literary tradition. As authors endeavored to produce a purely text-based form of fiction, modeled in part on the European novel, they began to reject the inclusion of images in their own work. -

Kyokutei Bakin’s Eight Dogs and Chinese Vernacular Novels by Shan Ren A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Department of East Asian Studies University of Alberta © Shan Ren, 2019 ABSTRACT Kyokutei Bakin’s 曲亭馬琴 (1767-1848) magnum opus Nansō Satomi Hakkenden 南総里見八犬伝 (The Chronicle of the Eight Dogs of the Nansō Satomi Clan; hereafter, Eight Dogs, 1814-42) had been long overlooked by both Japanese and Western academia. Although Eight Dogs has recently received more attention, most scholars still hold an oversimplified view of its relationship with Chinese vernacular novels. They believe that the large number of Chinese fictional narratives Bakin incorporated in Eight Dogs can be divided into two parts: Shuihu zhuan 水滸傳 (J. Suikoden; Water Margin) and everything else. This claim seems to be plausible because Bakin was indeed obsessed with Water Margin and he did use Water Margin as one of the main sources for Eight Dogs. However, this claim overlooks the possibility of the existence of other Chinese sources which also strongly influenced the composition of Eight Dogs. This research aims to investigate this possiblity of other important Chinese sources and Bakin’s motive and purpose in basing Eight Dogs on Chinese vernacular novels. In order to discuss Bakin’s use of Chinese vernacular novels in Eight Dogs, it is first and foremost important to identify all the crucial Chinese sources for Eight Dogs. Chapter One lays out Eight Dogs’ three main story lines and its three groups of main characters, among which one story line and a group of main characters match those of Water Margin, and the other two pairs match those of Sanguozhi yanyi 三國志演義 (J. -

Popular during its own day, it has enjoyed countless retellings on the stage, screen, and page. This article compares the shifting representations of dog–human interactions in Bakin’s text with its antecedents in Chinese legend and Japanese folktales, and with two recent retellings: Sakuraba Kazuki’snovelFuse: Gansaku Satomi Hakkenden (Fuse: A Counterfeit Chronicle of the Eight Dogs of the Satomi Clan, 2010) and its animated-film adaptation, Fuse: Teppō musume no torimonochō (Fuse: A Tale of a Girl with a Hunting Gun, dir. -

Thorsten Stolzenberg Between Coquetry and Gallantry Masculinities in the Bunka and Bunsei eras (1804–1830) Introduction This paper deals with aspects of Edo1 city urban life, modes of identi- fication, and habitus as reflected in and influenced by a contemporary discourse in the popular culture of the late Edo period (late 18th to mid 19th century) in Japan. Edo demography was characterized by a surplus of men from the military, craftsmen, and merchant classes until around 1800 (Sand and Steven 2012; Zöllner 2013, 59). This is not to suggest that urban identity centered solely on ideas of masculinity, but that the circumstances allowed for specific representations of masculinity unique to place and time. Naturally, concepts taken from Gender and Queer Studies pose certain difficulties when dealing with matters of the social and cultural history of Japan where native ideas relating to sex, gender, and sexuality existed that may or may not be translatable into notions such as ‘mas- culinity’ and ‘heterosexuality.’ Therefore, this paper does not aim at any definition of the masculine, but rather discusses some Japanese terms that served partially as aspects of a specific urban and male urban identity in 19th-century Edo city. 1 Modern day Tokyo was renamed as Tokyo (‘Eastern capital’) in 1868. The former military base of the first Tokugawa Shogun Ieyasu (1543–1616, r. 1603–1605) was the military political center during the Tokugawa, or Edo, period. 95 I argue that the aesthetics of urban sophistication developed in reaction to the changing perceptions of social order and public morale via dialogue and demarcation between the civilian and military society. -

The Beeinnine of Illustrated Books Scholarly opinion is divided on the question when exactly the printing of illustrated books began, but we may be sure that Wa-Kan sansai zue , written by Terajima Ry6an (the date of birth and death unknown) and published in 1712, was the first Japanese book to have the word "illustrated" (zue) in its title. I Sansai ("the three talents") means "heaven, earth, and man." Because the three of them together constitute the whole of the universe, "heaven, earth, and man" are the first three categories of the traditional Chinese encyclopaedia. In other words, the book is an illustrated (zue) encyclopaedia, pertaining to Japan (Wa) and China (Kan). As I said, Wa-Kan sansai zue was not the first illustrated book to be printed, but it was the first in a long line of the books that have the word "illustrated" in their title. Contrary to what one might expect, this first illustrated book was not in much demand. One of the reasons why Wa-Kan sansai zue did not sell well is that according to its title , the book should contain illustrations; it does, but the illustrations are few. Furthermore, the text is written in classical Chinese. -

Of special interest to readers of Non Solus is the Japanese ,rare book collection made up of scrolls, folding books, manuscripts, maps, and books printed with both movable type and wood blocks from the eighth century to the mid-nineteenth century. The collection is particularly rich in books produced during the Tokugawa period, 1600-1867 In the summer of 1974 a part of the collection was displayed for readers and visitors in the Rare Book Room. Most of the approximately one hundred books in the collection were purchased from the estate of Joseph K. Yamagiwa in 1969. Dr. Yamagiwa was a Japa- nese-American who, in the course of seeking out his roots, became a well known scholar of Japanese language and culture. His .academic career covered some thirty ).ears of teaching and research at the University of Michigan, and he collected books with great care and affection through- out his lifetime.
