Summary Woollen cloth has been made in the Lim Valley from at least medieval times, but this paper is more about the factories in Lyme Regis and Uplyme that made high-quality West of England coat cloths. The factories in Lyme were bankrupt in 1847, leaving the Uplyme factory to soldier on against Yorkshire competition until it was destroyed by fire in 1866, whilst being modernised. In Lyme the factories were started up again in the 1850s to make silk thread and hemp twine, but only for a short period; these are the subjects of other papers in this series. This paper contains: the background to the trade, the history of the factories and a walking trail to see the mills. Cloth making – the essential process in a nutshell Sheep fleeces are packed on the farm into big canvas bags called woolsacks. At the factory the fleeces are scoured (washed) to remove lanolin (wool- grease), dirt and adhering vegetable material. Then the fleeces are scribbled (torn up into pieces), combed and carded to produce rovings, long strips of wool ready for spinning. 14. ANTARCTICA Antarctica’s international boundaries may be distinguished from the international boundaries of other continents in fi ve ways. First, all the claimed boundaries coincide with meridians that meet at the South Pole (Figure 14.1). Second, there are no bilateral agreements dealing with national claims to the continent. However, Australia, Britain, France, New Zealand and Norway have ensured that their adjoining claims are conterminous. Third none of the boundaries in Antarctica have been demarcated. Fourth, none of the countries that claim terri- tory enforce any restrictions on the movements of people or goods at the limits of their territory. The issue of sovereignty was placed in abeyance by Article 4 of the Antarctic Treaty. 1. Nothing contained in the present Treaty shall be interpreted as: (a) a renunciation by any Contracting Party of previously asserted rights or claims to territorial sovereignty in Antarctica; (b) a renunciation or diminution by any Contracting Party of any basis of claim to territorial sovereignty in Antarctica which it may have whether as a result of its activities or those of its nationals in Antarctica, or otherwise; (c) prejudicing the position of any Contracting Party as regards its recogni- tion or non-recognition of any other State’s rights of or claim or basis of claim to territorial sovereignty in Antarctica. 2. No acts or activities taking place while the present Treaty is in force shall constitute a basis for asserting, supporting or denying a claim to territorial sovereignty in Antarctica or create any rights of sovereignty in Antarctica. No new claim, or enlargement of an existing claim to territorial sovereignty in Antarctica shall be asserted while the present treaty is in force. -

The first fossils in Antarctica were discovered on Seymour Island, and the eastern part of the Antarctic Peninsula was explored to 68° 10’ S. Large stocks of whale were reported in the Antarctic and near South Georgia, and this discovery paved the way for the large-scale whaling industry and activity in the south. -

Born in County Galway, Ireland in 1849, Ussher joined the Geological Survey of Great Britain (now British Geological Survey) in 1868 and spent his whole career (retiring in 1909) as a field and mapping surveyor. He is best known for his work in the south-west of England (Cornwall, Devon, Somerset), particularly his work on the Devonian, Carboniferous and Triassic strata. In 1894, he was awarded the Geological Society’s Murchison Medal. Many Survey maps and memoirs bear his name as does the Ussher Society founded in 1962 as a focus for geological research in south-west England. Letters from Charles Lyell and Adam Sedgwick to H. B. Tristram
LETTERS FROM CHARLES LYELL AND ADAM SEDGWICK TO H. B. TRISTRAM By S. I. TOMKEIEFF SOME years ago in Durham city, I bought a copy of the ninth edition of LyelPs Principles of Geology (1853).* At the back of the front cover it bore the ex libris of H. B. Tristram and an inscription stating that the book was presented to H. B. Tristram by the East Durham Book Hawking Society. Between the pages of this book I found three letters addressed to H. B. Tristram—two from Lyell and one from Sedgwick. These letters, as far as I know, have never been published. The name of Tristram does not occur in Life, letters and journals of Sir Charles Lyell,2 books on Lyell by T. G. Bonney3 and E. Bailey,4 and in Life and letters of Sedgwick.5 Thus the publication of these letters may be of historical interest. I have consulted Lord Lyell and his mother, Lady Lyell, who have no objection to the letters being published, but I failed to get in touch with the descendants of H. B. Tristram, or Sedgwick. The three letters contain no private matter and their publication can offend no one. The Reverend Henry Bower Tristram (182 2-1906), divine and naturalist, obtained his B.A. and M.A. at Oxford, in 1849 he became Rector at Castle Eden, Co. Durham, and in 1870 Canon of Durham Cathedral. In 1855-1857 he travelled in Algeria, the Sahara and later in Palestine and Egypt. In i860 he published a book, The Great Sahara.
