WELCOME TO EAST LOS ANGELES COLLEGE Whether you are here for the first time, or a continuing student, let me extend a warm welcome to the fall 2018 semester. East Los Angeles College is your college. The faculty, staff, and ad- ministration welcome you and want to help you reach your goals. The resource centers (Writing Center, Math Lab, and Learning As- sistance Center) are available to support your success. I encourage you to visit the resource centers and take advantage of the many workshops they have to offer. Please visit a counselor to develop or update your Educational Plan. I can’t stress enough that you must take charge of your education and plan ahead. East is home to a variety of arts programs located in the Performing and Fine Arts Center. It is extraordinary that we have an on-campus museum housing a permanent collection of fine art. The Vincent Price Art Gallery has had a presence on campus for more than 50 years. In the Theatre Department, the campus has two stages and a black box to host a robust schedule of recitals as well as theatre performances by your fellow students and faculty. I encourage you take an opportunity to walk through the Vincent Price Art Gallery or visit one of the many music, dance or theatre performances. Explore what ELAC has to offer and join the many clubs and orga- nizations that the campus supports. No matter what you plan to achieve, we are here to help you achieve your goals. OCTOBER 2008 Message from the Provost During the past few weeks, I am pleased to have presented an update on the progress being made by the El Camino College Compton Center to the City of Compton at a community-wide meeting as well as to our campus community, at a campus-wide meeting. The two presentations included a comprehensive update of Compton Center’s progress toward our overarching goals of increas- ing enrollment, building capacity and restoring credibility. The City of Compton community meeting, hosted by Compton’s Mayor Eric Perrodin, included comments from Trustees Jones and Cervantes; and Student Trustee King. For those who missed the campus and community updates, the FCMAT ratings in all areas were addressed and showed overall improvement in all areas. This document is posted to the Compton Web site under Current News. Current and future projects and funding through the Measure CC bond passed by Compton Community College District voters in November 2002 were also addressed at the meetings. The honorable Mayor Perrodin cited the importance of “increasing college-going rates in the City of Compton.” At the community meeting, several Compton alumni spoke proudly of the pos- itive impact Compton had on their lives, and how pleased they are about the current improvements being made. This week the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC) will be visiting El Camino College for our regular six year re-accreditation. Accreditation Meetings The ACCJC accreditation team members are visiting El Camino College and its centers October 6-9. An open meeting at Compton Center is scheduled for October 8 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.

  • Five LACCD Colleges Share in Over $10 Million in Grant Money
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MEDIA CONTACT: STEVE SPRINGER | (818) 522-5900 | [email protected] Five LACCD Colleges share in over $10 Million in Grant Money The U.S. Department of Education has awarded grants totaling $10.182 million to several colleges in the Los Angeles Community College District, the money to be spread among five schools. “The funds from these federal grants advance our educational mission to help more students succeed and achieve their educational goals,” said Scott Svonkin, president of the LACCD Board of Trustees. Los Angeles Valley College is expected to receive $3.25 million over five years under the Developing Hispanic-Serving Institutions Program, Title V. Two other LACCD schools, East Los Angeles College and Los Angeles Trade-Technical College, will share in the funding as Cooperative Institutions. “This cooperative project brings together three of the largest Hispanic-serving institutions in Los Angeles to create new strategies that will improve retention, persistence and completion of students," said Dr. Erika Endrijonas, president of LAVC. "Los Angeles Valley College looks forward to establishing practices that will help more students successfully graduate and/or transfer to a four-year college or university." "This unique dual-level approach brings together a teaching academy for faculty coupled with technology-enhanced learning experiences for students, directly impacting student success," said Dr. Deborah diCesare, dean of academic affairs and economic development at LAVC. "Not only will it help make significant strides in improving student learning and success, but the Endowment Match will allow for continued professional development after the grant ends." ELAC and Los Angeles Mission College will each receive a $2.6 million individual grant in the same program over the next five years.

The truth is, the visual arts have long been a vital and integral part of the local cultural scene, with generations of artists living and thriving here. These days, though, with so much art to experience throughout Greater Los Angeles, it's exceedingly apparent that Southern California isn't just attracting movie-industry dreamers — world-class visual artists are here to stay, too. Maybe it's the weather; maybe it's the light; maybe it's the wave of new local, national and even international art galleries opening their doors in L.A. One major factor, however, is undeniably SoCal's abundance of colleges and universities that take arts education so seriously that they've invested in impressive art galleries for the benefit of students and the public alike. In fact, we had some trouble narrowing the list of excellent on-campus art galleries to 15 — but we wanted to focus on not just the best but the more hidden gems that folks are least likely to know about.
