It has been handcrafted with the use of traditional methods from the fruit of old vines and delivers a rich, opulent palate, a fleshy core of dark fruit sweetness and a finish of superb length. VIDAL LEGACY SYRAH 2010 110 HAWKES BAY, NZ Near impenetrable, dark, deep, purple-hued ruby-red colour. The nose is elegantly proportioned and tightly concentrated with black berry fruits, black pepper and earthly minerals along with tar and spics, still bound and brooding. Medium-full bodied, the fruit flavours are somewhat shy and restrained, with black berries infused with black pepper, along with spices, ink and plummy notes. CLAYFIELD BLACK LABEL SHIRAZ 2010 125 GRAMPIANS, VIC. Brilliant deep ruby red colour with purple hue and good clarity are a hallmark of Clayfield Shiraz. Firmish, linear and finely crafted Shiraz with all the pepper and spice expected of western Victorian red with excellent concentration and potential to improve. It’s deeply fragrant and exceptionally spicy bouquet of raspberries, cassis and plums is enhanced by hints of meat and game, and backed by a well-balanced measure of lightly smoky cedar and vanilla oak. With a lean, firm spine of fine tannins, it’s long and medium to full in richness but impressively concentrated in its deep, dark flavours of berries and cherries. HENSCHKE KEYNETON ESTATE EUPHONIUM 2012 127 BAROSSA, SA A blend of 40% Shiraz, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. Deep crimson colour with deep crimson hue. Medium body. Perfumed nose of violet and cedar, followed by a hint of spice, vanilla and confectionary. The palate is both mouth filling and elegant, showing excellent length and depth of flavour. Very long aftertaste of mulberry, cedar, vanilla and pepper. FOX CREEK RESERVE SHIRAZ, 2013 130 MCLAREN VALE, SA The palate is rich and full with plum and red cherries up front, with the strawberries and custard filling out the mid palate. The wine finishes with great balance and elegance, and is characterised by black spices, nutty oak and focussed youthful tannins which will soften as the wine ages. PENFOLDS BIN 150 MARANANGA SHIRAZ 2013 135 BAROSSA, SA Bright red fruits conspire to create an amalgam, a continuum of flavours basking texturally avec sheen, gloss. These fruits do not travel solo – chinotto, liquorice, bread and butter pudding flavours peddle in parallel, quietly courted by stylish oak. STEAKHOUSE CELLAR COLLECTION PENFOLDS BIN 389 2013 140 BAROSSA, SA With thick skins, royal purple in colour and elegant flavours derived from ideal grape-picking conditions, cabernet sauvignon provides the structure and palate length. Shiraz grapes, akin to small. PETALUMA ‘COONAWARRA’ CABERNET 2012 145 COONAWARRA, SA Petaluma’s famous ‘Coonawarra’ blend of old-vine Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Shiraz, all from the Evans Vineyard in the centre of cigar strip of Terra Rossa red soil over limestone. The 2010 vintage has to be one of the best – packed full of ripe fruit, mocha and velvety tannins. A wine not to be missed! RESCHKE ‘BOS’ CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2004 149 COONAWARRA, SA Very deep crimson, brick red colour with brick red hue, showing development. Aroma of cedar and cigar box followed by old and new leather with herbaceous end note. The palate fruit is drying out. Flavours of cedar, cigar box and leather. Fine, dryish tannins which persist. Aftertaste of leather and spice. THE VICAR’S SHIRAZ 2011 150 MCLAREN VALE, SA The Vicar 2009 Shiraz displays charismatic layers of mulberry, roasted fennel seeds and paprika flavours, which are seamlessly interlinked by a sublime savoury texture. The synergistic balance of the complex spice flavours, palate weight as well as the firm and generous tannin structure will ensure that the wine will develop further complexity.

  • 2018 D'arenberg
2018 d’ARENBERG THE HERMIT CRAB VIOGNIER MARSANNE WINEMAKER: Chester Osborn REGION: McLaren Vale, South Australia VARIETALS: Viognier (62%), Marsanne (38%) MATURATION: 10% in seasoned French oak for 8 months ANALYSIS: 13.5% alc/vol | TA: 6.8 g/L | pH: 3.20 BACKGROUND: Many of McLaren Vale’s vineyards are on free-draining soils underlain with limestone, formed by the calcareous remains of the local marine fauna including the Hermit Crab, a reclusive little creature that inhabits the cast-off shells of others. Thus the Osborn family thought the name appropriate for this blend, as it is best enjoyed with shellfish and seafood dishes. WINEMAKING NOTES: Small batches of grapes were crushed and transferred to stainless steel basket presses. Fermentation was long and moderately cool to retain fresh fruit characters. 4% underwent wild fermentation for extra complexity. 14% of the Viognier was fermented in seasoned French oak to add mouth feel and support the subtle Viognier tannins. Both components received similar treatment, but were not blended until the final stages of the winemaking process. TASTING NOTES: An incredibly fragrant nose full of sweet apricot and gingery spice. The palate is luscious and generous, but has great acid which tightens the wine, adding freshness and a clean crisp finish. Slight pithy feel which builds on the spice notes. CRITICAL ACCLAIM: 93 pts JamesSucking.com, 91 pts/Best Buy Wine & Spirits, 90 pts Wine Spectator ABOUT d’ARENBERG: One of the undisputed kings of Australian Shiraz and Rhone varietals, d’Arenberg has managed to turn individuality into an art form by doing a whole lot of little things differently.
