At an early age it made him reflect more deeply upon the meaning of life and the direction in which A MAN OF MANY GIFTS his own life was headed. Philip also recalls with gratitude the support which he and his family received from the Carmel- ites throughout those difficult years. During his time in Terenure College, Philip became in- volved in a whole range of activities which led him to a deeper insight into the life of the community. He developed a love of working with people and could see how worth- while and rewarding such work could be. In fifth year Philip attended a "Vocations Open Weekend" in Gort Muire which attracted people who were endowed with a variety of different gifts. It was a weekend which helped him to discern his own gifts and strengths. He admits it was an important time in his life.
