Aranžování a rytmus studoval u Ji- řího Slavíka, klavír u Jana Vrány a Iriny Parker a jazz mj. u Jiřího Růžičky a Ondreje Krajňáka. Provozuje převážně jazz, pop, chansony a příležitostně klasickou hudbu, řadu let doprovází Janu Koubkovou, Petra Kroutila, Radku Fišarovou, Ivána Gutiérreze, Sestry Havelkovy a mnohé další. Technické vzdělání využívá ke stavbě elektronických hudebních nástrojů a různých aparátů. Téhož roku se začal (Columbia 2003) věnovat klavíru na Konzervatoři Jaroslava Ježka (gradu- oval v roce 2000), kde ale už od roku 1999 vyučuje (Jaz- zové piano, Akordeon, Souborovou hru, Dějiny klavíru, dříve i Kontrapunkt a Akustiku). V roce 2006 se dostal do semifinále mezinárodní soutěže sólového piana na švýcarském Montreux Jazz Festivalu. U Karla Růžičky na pražské HAMU absolvoval v roce 2016 diplomovou Ondřej Kabrna Trio - Timeways Plus prací o jazzem ovlivněné tvorbě židovského autora (Arta Records 2010) KRYŠTOF TOMEČEK Vynikající kytarista, a studenty všech věkových kategorií. Od roku 2018 baskytarista a působí na International School of Music and Fine Arts skladatel pochází (musicschoolprague.com) v Praze. z olomoucké hu- dební rodiny, na kytaru začal hrát ve 14 letech. Ab- solvoval Konzerva- toř Jaroslava Ježka (kjj.cz) a Akademii múzických umění (hamu.cz). Studoval také na Královské konzervatoři (kcb.be) v Bruselu. Je žádaným spoluhráčem v různých prestižních jazzových i rockových kapelách (Ondřej Kabrna Trio, Pražský Big Band Milana Svobody, Golden Big Band Prague, Top Dream Company a mnohé další). Rovněž je zkušeným a vyhledáva- Kristina Barta - EMA 29 ným pedagogem s víceletou praxí. Pracuje s dětmi (Alessa Records 2017) ÚSTÍ NAD LABEM – 5 – JAKUB NÝVLT Doksanského (doksansky.com) studoval (2012 - 18) Konzervatoř Jaroslava Ježka (kjj.cz), jíž zakončil absol- ventským koncertem (úterý 12. 6. 2018). Kromě půso- bení v Big Bandu VOŠ Konzervatoře Jaroslava Ježka či ansámblu slovenského kytaristy Karola Komendy funguje od roku 2013 v úpické symphonic-metalové formaci Wishmasters (wishmasters-official.com). Žánrově víceméně univerzální a citlivý bubeník půvo- dem z královéhradecké Horní Radechové navštěvoval od roku 2008 hronovskou Střední školu průmyslovou, Wishmasters - Beatrice textilní a polygrafickou (spshronov.cz). Spolupracoval s Pražským Big Bandem Milana Svobody, Rozhlasovým Big Bandem Gustava Broma, Neratovickým Bigbandem, Národním divadlem, Českou televizí a byl mj. také členem Filmového symfonického orchestru (praguefilmor- Ida Kelarova, Desiderius Duzda, chestra.com). Jeho nápaditý melodický projev plně Jazz Famelija & Guests - snese srovnání s velikány moderního jazzu jako Freddie Šunen Savore (Listen Everyone) Hubbard, Clifford Brown či Miles Davis. V současné (Indies Scope 2012) – 6 – JAZZ & BLUES 2018 JÁN FEČO (*1990) Vysoce talentova- jedinečnými autentickými jazzovými postupy.     Discography Updates (Updated May, 2021) I’ve been amassing corrections and additions since the August, 2012 publication of Pepper Adams’ Joy Road. Its 2013 paperback edition gave me a chance to overhaul the Index. For reasons I explain below, it’s vastly superior to the index in the hardcover version. But those are static changes, fixed in the manuscript. Discographers know that their databases are instantly obsolete upon publication. New commercial recordings continue to get released or reissued. Audience recordings are continually discovered. Errors are unmasked, and missing information slowly but surely gets supplanted by new data. That’s why discographies in book form are now a rarity. With the steady stream of updates that are needed to keep a discography current, the internet is the ideal medium. When Joy Road goes out of print, in fact, my entire book with updates will be posted right here. At that time, many of these changes will be combined with their corresponding entries. Until then, to give you the fullest sense of each session, please consult the original entry as well as information here.     Music and Talent on Display at the Motif Music Awards The weather was nearly perfect. And it was a Tuesday night. Two things that should each result in people not piling into a crowded music venue for the evening. Yet that’s what they did on May 8 to witness and take part in the annual Motif Music Awards. It is a rare and wonderful thing, producing a sort of musical talent higher consciousness feeling in music writers, to have as much talent and love of music in one room as we had that night. All manner of music professional was represented – venue owners and booking agents, photographers and sound engineers, lead singers and drummers and everyone in between. Seeing hardcore and hip-hop and folk and alt artists interact for perhaps the only night of the year was especially exciting to the Motif hosts. “We usually only get to interact with the other people on a bill,” said one folk artist (who didn’t realize she was being interviewed). “When you’re gigging as much as possible, you can actually lose touch with other musicians.” The point of the Motif Music Awards is not to proclaim winners. We do that because it’s fun and because every project needs a climax, but the point of the evening is to get those remarkable individuals together in a room. And the point of the process is to get people on and voting and appreciating how much amazing music is being produced locally, and maybe exploring some bands they’d never heard of before, or remembering some great ones they already knew.

While pursuing a degree in Nuclear Physics at Columbia University, he ended up working for the US Army Corps of Engineers on what came to be known as the Manhattan Project, whose responsibility was the development of the first atomic bombs. After the war, security concerns and red tape created a no-win situation: finishing his degree was pointless. A summer job after the war led to a career in the music business. He cut his first record in 1947 at the age of 22. He remained active in the business until shortly before his death at age 77. Early on, Dowd met the Ertegun brothers, Ahmet and Nesuhi. The Ertegun brothers had a record label, Atlantic Records, and they had the good sense and timing to hire Dowd and Jerry Wexler.

Popa began playing east coast clubs and in a short time became the house band at the legendary Manny’s Car Wash in NYC where he worked with notable artists from Albert King to Odetta. In 1993, after winning first place in the KLON National Blues Talent Search (runner up was Keb Mo),he signed a deal with the Sony’s O-KEH label and made the record “Booty And The Beast” with legendary Atlantic Records producer Tom Dowd at the helm. The record yielded a Billboard top 100 hit with “Sweet Goddess Of Love And Beer.” Chubby was on his way. After the birth of his twin daughters, Theodora and Tipitina, he began to tour the world. Popa Chubby became a mainstay on the European festival scene and he has headlined such notable festivals as The Nice Jazz Festival, Freewheels Festival, Bos Pop Festival, The Kolne Rhythm and Blues Festival, The Montreal Jazz Festival, The New York State Blues Festival, and many more. Fun Fact: Popa was contacted by Dreamworks Productions and asked to audition for the role of Shrek on Broadway. He worked in two staged readings with Tony award winning director Jason Moore before previous commitments took him back on tour. In 2009 Popa joined the Dutch based Provogue record label and released the blues rock masterpiece “The Fight Is On.” 2010 saw Popa’s highest grossing year to date with concerts in 11 countries.
