EVERGREENS, WREATHS, CRAFTS AND MORE Ukiah native gets Medal of Valor honors By BEN BROWN The Daily Journal A former Ukiah resident received the Medal of Valor from Attorney General Michael Munkasey this week for his actions as a police officer when four men suspected of armed robbery tried to run him over in a parking lot. “In a line of work where courageous acts can be part of one’s daily duties, these extraordinary men set themselves apart through deeds of incredible self-sacrifice and we salute them,” Munkasey said. On May 22, 2006, Kevin Howland, who grew up in Ukiah, was working as an offi- cer with the Sacramento Police Department when he was called to respond to an armed robbery. Two men had allegedly robbed a young man at gunpoint at around 1 p.m., taking his wallet. The suspects fled the scene in a maroon Chrysler. Howland responded to the area and saw a vehicle that matched the description the victim had given in the parking lot of the Natomas Market Place. Howland saw two people in the front seat of the car who matched the description given by the robbery victim. He parked his patrol car to block their exit, called for backup and got out of his car. One of the suspects began to walk away from the car and Howland ordered MacLeod Pappidas/The Daily Journal him to stop and get back in the car. • Bob Dylan Performs “It's Alright, Ma (I'm Only Bleeding),” 1964–2009
Volume 19, Number 4, December 2013 Copyright © 2013 Society for Music Theory A Foreign Sound to Your Ear: Bob Dylan Performs “It’s Alright, Ma (I’m Only Bleeding),” 1964–2009 * Steven Rings NOTE: The examples for the (text-only) PDF version of this item are available online at: http://www.mtosmt.org/issues/mto.13.19.4/mto.13.19.4.rings.php KEYWORDS: Bob Dylan, performance, analysis, genre, improvisation, voice, schema, code ABSTRACT: This article presents a “longitudinal” study of Bob Dylan’s performances of the song “It’s Alright, Ma (I’m Only Bleeding)” over a 45-year period, from 1964 until 2009. The song makes for a vivid case study in Dylanesque reinvention: over nearly 800 performances, Dylan has played it solo and with a band (acoustic and electric); in five different keys; in diverse meters and tempos; and in arrangements that index a dizzying array of genres (folk, blues, country, rockabilly, soul, arena rock, etc.). This is to say nothing of the countless performative inflections in each evening’s rendering, especially in Dylan’s singing, which varies widely as regards phrasing, rhythm, pitch, articulation, and timbre. How can music theorists engage analytically with such a moving target, and what insights into Dylan’s music and its meanings might such a study reveal? The present article proposes one set of answers to these questions. First, by deploying a range of analytical techniques—from spectrographic analysis to schema theory—it demonstrates that the analytical challenges raised by Dylan’s performances are not as insurmountable as they might at first appear, especially when approached with a strategic and flexible methodological pluralism.

  • Weekly Notes 072817
MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL WEEKLY NOTES FRIDAY, JULY 28, 2017 BLACKMON WORKING TOWARD HISTORIC SEASON On Sunday afternoon against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Coors Field, Colorado Rockies All-Star outfi elder Charlie Blackmon went 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored and his 24th home run of the season. With the round-tripper, Blackmon recorded his 57th extra-base hit on the season, which include 20 doubles, 13 triples and his aforementioned 24 home runs. Pacing the Majors in triples, Blackmon trails only his teammate, All-Star Nolan Arenado for the most extra-base hits (60) in the Majors. Blackmon is looking to become the fi rst Major League player to log at least 20 doubles, 20 triples and 20 home runs in a single season since Curtis Granderson (38-23-23) and Jimmy Rollins (38-20-30) both accomplished the feat during the 2007 season. Since 1901, there have only been seven 20-20-20 players, including Granderson, Rollins, Hall of Famers George Brett (1979) and Willie Mays (1957), Jeff Heath (1941), Hall of Famer Jim Bottomley (1928) and Frank Schulte, who did so during his MVP-winning 1911 season. Charlie would become the fi rst Rockies player in franchise history to post such a season. If the season were to end today, Blackmon’s extra-base hit line (20-13-24) has only been replicated by 34 diff erent players in MLB history with Rollins’ 2007 season being the most recent. It is the fi rst stat line of its kind in Rockies franchise history. Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig is the only player in history to post such a line in four seasons (1927-28, 30-31).

Do evidence jsme zařadili hráče, kteří reprezentovali Českou republiku na světových šampionátech juniorů v letech 2005-2009. Využili jsme tedy nominace trenérů těchto reprezentací. Celkem jsme zjišťovali a shromažďovali data o 88 hráčích. And try to get there early: the Busienss of Baseball Committee’s annual meeting will be held Thursday afternoon, June 24, from 3:00-4:00 p.m. We’re scheduled opposite Baseball Records and just before Ballparks and Retrosheet.) Last issue’s discussion of the large market/small market issue ran so long that I’ve got six months of news updates to present...so on with the show! MLB News Luxury tax bills paid. After posting a 79-83 record with the majors’ highest payroll, the Baltimore Orioles were hit with a $3,138,621 luxury tax bill for the 1998 season. Other taxpayers included the Red Sox ($2,184,734), Yankees ($684,390), Braves ($495,625) and Dodgers ($49,593). The tax threshold, originally expected to reach $55 million in 1998, actually leaped to $70,501,185, including $5,576,415 per team in benefits. This figure represents the midpoint between the fifth- and sixth-highest payrolls. The luxury tax rate falls from 35% to 34% in 1999, then disappears entirely in 2000. Owners go 9-2 in arbitration. Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera of the Yankees were the only players to win their arbitration hearings, although 51 of the 62 cases settled before a ruling.
